Models With Cytoplasmic Effects For Birth, Weaning, And Fleece Weights, And Litter Size At Birth For A Population Of Targhee Sheep, L. Dale Van Vleck, G. D. Snowder, Kathryn J. Hanford

Fifteen models were compared for the birth weight of 33,994 lambs recorded at the U.S. Sheep Experimental Station (1950 to 1998). The initial intent was to estimate fractions of variance due to cytoplasmic line (c2; n = 892) and sire by cytoplasmic line interaction (sc2; n = 17,557). The basic model included direct genetic (fractional variance, a2; n = 35,684), maternal genetic (m2, with correlation r-am), and maternal permanent environmental (p2; n = 8,418) effects. The model with sc2 was significantly better than the basic model with and without c2. When …

The major purpose of this study was to examine whether the assessment of pre-adoption video (pre-vid) by an experienced pediatrician accurately predicts the post-adoption developmental (post-dev) status of the adoptee on arrival and to examine any difference in the extent of developmental delay between those adoptees with and those without a pre-vid review. As a foundation for the study, an extensive database for all adoptees seen at the Yale International Adoption Clinic was created and their demographic characteristics were analyzed. Copper Deficiency In Hl-60 Cells Increases Their Susceptibility To Apoptosis When Treated With Antioxidants., Laura Jean Raymond

The location and function of the electron transport chain render the mitochondria the primary source for potentially damaging reactive oxygen species in aerobic cells. Normally, the concentration of superoxide anion in mitochondria is controlled, at least in part, by the sequential action of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. However, when the terminal steps of the electron transport are impaired or inhibited, superoxide anion production may rise to levels that overwhelm the normal protective enzymes. Studies have shown that copper deficiency causes a reduction in the activity of cytochrome-c oxidase, the copper dependent, terminal respiratory complex of the electron transport chain. …

The Papers Of Professor Emeritus Jerome Krase, Brooklyn College Library And Academic It
Finding Aids
Jerome Krase, professor of sociology at Brooklyn College from 1970-2003 and chair of the sociology department twice, taught classes in urban sociology, inter-ethnic group relations and introductory courses. For three decades, he worked as a community activist-scholar and was a student of "ordinary" urban neighborhood life by lecturing, giving photographic exhibitions, and writing for alternative newspapers. He lectured and did research at Universities of Perugia, Pisa, Trento, and Trieste. Dr Krase was a visiting professor at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and the University of Rome, "La Sapienza." He retired from Brooklyn College in Spring 2003.

Pain-And-Suffering Damages In Tort Law: Revisiting The Theoretical Framework And The Empirical Evidence, Ronen Avraham

Should there be pain-and-suffering damages in tort law? Most legal economists who wrote on the subject that there should not be pain-and-suffering damages in tort law. A minority of scholars thought the decision of whether tort law should provide pain-and-suffering damages is an empirical, or an experimental, question that cannot be armchair-theorized. Yet, all scholars who have done empirical or experimental work to explore the desirability of pain-and-suffering damages reached the conclusion that it is undesirable. In this paper I argue that the majority view cannot serve as a policy-making aid. I side with the minority of scholars who argue …
