Effects Of Food Consumption And Temperature On Growth Rate And Biochemical-Based Indicators Of Growth In Early Juvenile Atlantic Cod Gadus Morhua And Haddock Melanogrammus Aeglefinus, Myron Arms Peck, Lawrence J. Buckley, Elaine M. Caldarone, David A. Bengtson

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

The relationship between the somatic growth rate (G) and feeding level (unfed, intermediate, and maximum rations) of age-0 juvenile cod Gadus morhua and haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus was quantified at different temperatures. Laboratory trials were conducted using 2 sizeclasses of cod (3.6 to 5.6 cm standard length [SL], and 8.1 to 12.4 cm SL) at 5, 8, 12, and 15°C, and 1 size-class of haddock (6.0 to 9.6 cm SL) at 8 and 12°C. The shape of the growth-feeding relationship was well described by a 3-parameter asymptotic function for cod and by a linear function for haddock (R2 range …

Influential Factors Contributing To Exercise Compliance Following A Structured Lifestyle Change Program, Wayne E. Borin Edd Apr 2003

Influential Factors Contributing To Exercise Compliance Following A Structured Lifestyle Change Program, Wayne E. Borin Edd

Dissertations

Cardiovascular disease remains the number one cause of death in the United States, with five hundred thousand people diagnosed annually. Even though regular exercise has been shown to dramatically reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, few hospitals offer programs that focus on the requisite lifestyle changes for participants to maintain long-term exercise programs. In an effort to determine what factors contribute to long-term exercise compliance, this study surveyed 279 participants of the Scripps Ornish/Healing Hearts program, a comprehensive lifestyle change program, to identify the factors that helped explain variation in exercise compliance among program completers. Results of the hierarchical multiple …

Agroecosystems Analysis From The Grass Roots: A Multidimensional Experiential Learning Course, Mary Wiedenhoeft, Steve Simmons, Ricardo Salvador, Gina Mcandrews, Charles A. Francis, James W. King, David Hole

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

An intensive, experiential travel course in Agroecosystems Analysis was conducted in Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska (United States) during summers of 1998 and 1999. The intended student audience was advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students. Pretravel readings and a week-long series of farm visits, which consisted of in-depth interviews with the farmers and their families, prepared student teams to analyze and evaluate the production, economic, environmental, and social sustainability of 10 farms. Students shared their analyses both orally and in written reports. Based on a multifaceted student evaluation process, we found that participants were highly motivated, strongly engaged with the course …

A Way Of Life: Saranac Lake And The 'Fresh Air' Cure For Tuberculosis, Ellen Damsky Apr 2003

A Way Of Life: Saranac Lake And The 'Fresh Air' Cure For Tuberculosis, Ellen Damsky

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

In 1884, Edward Livingston Trudeau officially opened The Adirondack Cottage Sanitarium for the treatment of tuberculosis in Saranac Lake, New York. For the next seventy years, what became known as the Trudeau Sanatorium was the model of American sanatoria, promoting fresh air, rest, and nutritious food in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. The introduction and use of antibiotic drugs in the treatment of disease effectively ended the sanatorium movement as well as demarcates an important juncture in American medical and scientific history. Trudeau's treatment and the Sanatorium are interpreted as social and ideological constructs from the perspectives of verbal expression, …

Charismatic Mega-Fauna Or Vermin Vertebrate - Where Are You?, Gary J. San Julian

Wildlife Damage Management Conference

Wildlife populations throughout much of the United States were decimated by the end of the 1800s. Many states established game agencies to protect wildlife and generate revenue through the sale of hunting licenses. These efforts were successful, populations grew, and citizens enjoyed seeing the large herbivores and camivores--the charismatic mega-fauna. In the past, most citizens and students had some tie with the farming community. Today's students often lack that link to the land and hunting. Wildlife agencies and universities are looking at ways to improve young professionals' understanding of the role hunting plays in management. Citizens that once left their …
