We used DNA macroarray analysis to identify genes that respond to the status of the intracellular acetyl phosphate (acP) pool. Genes whose expression correlated negatively with the ability to synthesize acP (i.e. negatively regulated genes) function primarily in flagella biosynthesis, a result consistent with observations that we published previously (Prüß and Wolfe, 1994, Mol Microbiol 12: 973-984). In contrast, genes whose expression correlated positively with the ability to synthesize acP (i.e. positively regulated genes) include those for type 1 pilus assembly, colanic acid (capsule) biosynthesis and certain stress effectors. To our knowledge, this constitutes the first report that these genes …

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in the United States. Two factors associated with a decreased risk of developing cardiovascular disease are elevated HDL levels and sex — specifically, a decreased risk is found in premenopausal women. HDL and estrogen stimulate eNOS and the production of nitric oxide, which has numerous protective effects in the vascular system including vasodilation, antiadhesion, and anti-inflammatory effects. We tested the hypothesis that HDL binds to its receptor, scavenger receptor class B type I (SR-BI), and delivers estrogen to eNOS, thereby stimulating the enzyme. HDL isolated from women stimulated eNOS, whereas HDL isolated …

Libertarian Paternalism Is Not An Oxymoron, Richard H. Thaler, Cass R. Sunstein May 2003

Libertarian Paternalism Is Not An Oxymoron, Richard H. Thaler, Cass R. Sunstein

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

The idea of libertarian paternalism might seem to be an oxymoron, but it is both possible and legitimate for private and public institutions to affect behavior while also respecting freedom of choice. Often people’s preferences are ill-formed, and their choices will inevitably be influenced by default rules, framing effects, and starting points. In these circumstances, a form of paternalism cannot be avoided. Equipped with an understanding of behavioral findings of bounded rationality and bounded self-control, libertarian paternalists should attempt to steer people’s choices in welfare-promoting directions without eliminating freedom of choice. It is also possible to show how a libertarian …

Rapid Effects Of 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 On Calcium Uptake In Isolated Chick Enterocytes, Ruta Phadnis May 2003

Rapid Effects Of 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 On Calcium Uptake In Isolated Chick Enterocytes, Ruta Phadnis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

25-Hydroxyvitamin D3[25(OH)D3] is a metabolite of vitamin D3 that has long been considered to be an inactive precursor of the hormonally active metabolite 1,25- dihydroxyvitamin D3[l,25(OH)2D3]; consequently very few studies have addressed the potential biological activity of 25(OH)2D3. However, it is known that 100 nM 25(OH)2D3 increases calcium transport in the perfused duodenal loop of the chicken to 200% of controls within 20 minutes. The hypothesis of the current study is that 25(OH)2D3 may be a hormonally active metabolite …

Phenotypic Plasticity And Interactions Among Plants, Ragan M. Callaway, Steven C. Pennings, Christina L. Richards May 2003

Phenotypic Plasticity And Interactions Among Plants, Ragan M. Callaway, Steven C. Pennings, Christina L. Richards

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

We know a great deal about the plastic responses of plant phenotypes to the abiotic and biotic environment, but very little about the consequences of phenotypic plasticity for plant communities. In other words, we know that plant traits can vary widely for a given genotype, but we know little about the importance of trait-mediated interactions (TMI) among plants. Here, we discuss three major factors that affect the expression of phenotypic plasticity: variation in the abiotic environment, variation in the presence or identity of neighbors, and variation in herbivory. We consider how plastic responses to these factors might affect interactions among …

Review Of "The World Bank, A Case For Aid: Building A Consensus For Development Assistance," By James D. Wolfensohn & Nicolas Stern, Bryan Erickson

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] "The World Bank’s new book, A Case for Aid: Building a Consensus for Development Assistance, indicates how dramatic and lasting the progress against global poverty has been in the past 50 years. It also shows how dramatically the Bank’s own understanding has risen, even in the past decade, of how to make its efforts more effective in relieving poverty and achieving other development goals. These two themes form the basis for the World Bank’s visionary thesis: that eradicating much of the poverty, ill health, and illiteracy around the world is within reach.

Isolated Ventricular Myocyte Contractile Function Is Depressed In Rats Fed High Fat And/Or Marginally Copper -Deficient Diets., David P. Relling May 2003

Isolated Ventricular Myocyte Contractile Function Is Depressed In Rats Fed High Fat And/Or Marginally Copper -Deficient Diets., David P. Relling

Theses and Dissertations

Obesity is influenced by dietary consumption of fat while much of the population consumes a diet deficient of the trace mineral copper. Obesity and copper deficiency can alter cardiovascular function; including cardiac hypertrophy, increased myocyte lipid droplet volume, and cardiac contractile depression. Interestingly, lipotoxic dysfunction is characterized by many of the same mechanistic alterations that are observed in obesity and copper deficiency. Additionally, the sphingolipid ceramide is elevated in lipotoxic dysfunction. However, functional leptin:leptin receptor signaling prevents lipotoxic dysfunction. The purpose of my dissertation was to determine the role of a high fat and marginal copper deficient diet on cardiac …

Rolled-Leaf Hispine Herbivory Of Heliconia Spp. (Heliconiaceae) Over An Altitudinal Gradient, May 2003, Sarah Bachman

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Hispine beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae, Hispinae) are herbivores of the Order Zingiberales (Strong 1977a). In Monteverde area there are three known species of Heliconiaceae (Zingiberales): Heliconia monteverdensis, H. tortuosa, and H. vaginalis (Haber, 1990). H. monteverdensis is a high elevation species (1500 – 1800m) whose range does not overlap with H. vaginalis, a low elevation species (700-1300m). H. tortuosa occurs along the elevational gradient from San Luis (1000m) to the forest behind the Estación Biológica de Monteverde (1760m) where this study was performed, and overlaps in geographical range with the other two species. In this study I looked at patterns of …

Influence Of Sward Height, Daily Timing Of Concentrate Supplementation And Grazing Time Management On Pasture Utilization Of Lactating Beef Cows, Ondieki James Gekara

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To establish the effect of sward height, concentrate feeding time and grazing time management on performance of grazing cattle, thirty-two cross-bred beef (24 Angus and 8 Hereford) cows (632 kg BW) and calves (104 kg BW) were grouped by weight and calving date. They were randomly assigned to two sward height (SH) treatments (4 to 8 or 8 to 12 cm), replicated four times. The cows were fed a concentrate supplement (4.1 kg DM·cow -1·d-1) in the AM at 0700 h or PM at 1800 h (T), and either restricted to 12 h/d grazing (0700 to 1900 h) or unrestricted …

Regulation Of P-Glycoprotein And Abcp Transporters, Dhanashri Ramkrishna Kolwankar May 2003

Regulation Of P-Glycoprotein And Abcp Transporters, Dhanashri Ramkrishna Kolwankar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The placenta plays an important role in modulating xenobiotic passage from mother to fetus. Smoking is known to induce cytochrome P450 1Al (CYP1A1) expression in the placenta, however its effect on P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and ABC transporter in placenta (ABCP) levels in placenta is not known. In-vitro studies in hepatocytes have reported induction of P-gp mRNA by some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. To examine whether smoking can affect placental P-gp and ABCP, their expression and activity were determined in placentas from smokers and non-smokers. Uptake of [3H]-vinblastine and [3H]-mitoxantrone was used to measure P-gp and ABCP function, respectively and CYP1A1 activity (positive …

Get It Out Of My Backyard! Why We Need To Proactively Plan For “Sensitive” Uses, Tara A. Kelly May 2003

Get It Out Of My Backyard! Why We Need To Proactively Plan For “Sensitive” Uses, Tara A. Kelly

Master's Projects

Today’s planning literature is ripe with articles and books proclaiming the value of “Smart Growth” and to a lesser degree New Urbanism. Planning conferences*, magazines and websites repeatedly proclaim the need for planners and municipal leaders to adopt Smart Growth practices and New Urbanist design guidelines as they shape the futures of their regions.

Broadly, Smart Growth is a set of planning principles largely defined and popularized in reaction to what is seen as the failures of sprawling single-family development which has dominated post-World War II housing construction in the United States.

Smart Growth’s counterpart, New Urbanism, was developed primarily …
