Comparisons Of Reading Scores In Two Tennessee Elementary Schools Between Students Receiving And Not Receiving Specialized Training In Phonemic Awareness., Raymond Lee Hatfield
Comparisons Of Reading Scores In Two Tennessee Elementary Schools Between Students Receiving And Not Receiving Specialized Training In Phonemic Awareness., Raymond Lee Hatfield
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Phonemic awareness has been identified as an essential precursor to reading. Many children suffer from a condition called central auditory processing disorder. Students suffering from this disorder have difficulty distinguishing between phonemes. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness for developing phonemic awareness skills in early readers by using a computer program designed to enhance the phonemic awareness skills of students. During the 2001-2002 school year, students located at two Kingsport elementary schools were administered the Brigance Comprehensive Inventory of Basic Skills pretest and posttest. Based on the results of the pretest and posttest data, it was determined that …

The Effects Of Adult Interaction On Toddler Behavior In The Classroom., Sarah Webb Hackney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of positive adult-to-child physical interactions and negative toddler behaviors in the classroom. Twenty-one licensed childcare centers participated in this study. One center was used to field-test the researcher-created tally instruments. The 20 centers remaining were observed to identify the number of positive adult-to-child physical interactions. They were then ranked from the classroom having the highest amount of adult-to-child interactions to that having the lowest. Three classrooms were then randomly selected from both the top and bottom thirds, providing six classrooms for the final study. Negative toddler behaviors were then observed …

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
The relationship hctwccn the level of acculturation anManual de Normas y procedimientos para la Bateria Neuropsicologica en Espanol (Artiola i Fortuny, Hennosillo, Heaton, & Pardee, 1999) using the Mexico/U.S. border region norms in the manual. Significant differences were demonstrated for Total Number Correct (p < .01) for the less acculturated subgroup (n = 26). There were no significant differences between the more acculturated subgroup (n = 8) and the Spanish normative sample. This study demonstrates that the WCST is not a culture-free neuropsychological instrument. The results provide supporting evidence for the use of the Mexico/U.S. border region norms with Spanish-speaking Mexican Americans in the Northwest region of the United States.

Word Ways
Many of the new palindromes listed in The Palindromicon II (Jeff Grant and Dan Tilque, Word Ways Monograph Series 6, 2002) will, undoubtedly, find their way into Word Ways. The longer palindromes, especially when they are solid words, have a special appeal due to their sheer length. After reading through The Palindromicon II, however, I found my thoughts swelling on the more humble, 5-letter. palindromes.

Aboriginal Fishing Strategy : Recognising The Past, Fishing For The Future. Draft Report To The Minister For Agriculture, Forestry And Fisheries, Department Of Fisheries., Aboriginal And Torres Strait Islander Commission., Fisheries Research And Development Corporation., Department Of Indigenous Affairs.
Fisheries Management Papers
The draft Aboriginal Fishing Strategy report is a comprehensive effort to recognise the interests of Aboriginal people in the protection and use of fish resources in Western Australia. It is perhaps the most comprehensive report of its kind in Australia. As this Government moves toward a more integrated approach to the management of fish resources this report is timely, and represents an opportunity to ensure Aboriginal fishing interests are given appropriate recognition in a more holistic approach to ensuring fish stocks are sustained for future generations.

Can You Tell The Difference, Brian Roth
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
Theorists have been led to believe that there is a gender difference when it comes to how you eat. In my present study I recruited sixteen females and fifteen males who participated in a survey and taste test to see if there was a gender difference between males and females in regards to identifying store brand food and name brand food. I found that there is no gender difference in the ability to name brand food and store brand food. I plan on presenting my study to several grocery stores and showing them my results. The grocery stores could then …
Call To Action To Elders Worldwide: The Need To Highlight Their Abilities, Wisdom, And Compassion As Citizen Diplomats, And Leaders For Social Change, Florence Ross
Peace and Conflict Studies
Excerpt
Kofi Annan (1999), the Secretary-General of the United Nations, noted that, “A Society for All Ages is one that sees elders as both agents and beneficiaries of development. It honors traditional elders in their leadership and consultative role in communities throughout the world.” Older persons are among the world resources most often unseen and overlooked. It therefore becomes necessary to raise the consciousness of older people to their changing role in American and global societies to ensure fulfillment in their eldering years. Prior prejudice against elders has prevented inclusion of their enormous potential, of their accumulated experience and wisdom. …

Rural Women's Land Rights In Java, Indonesia: Strengthened By Family Law, But Weakened By Land Registration, Jennifer Brown
Rural Women's Land Rights In Java, Indonesia: Strengthened By Family Law, But Weakened By Land Registration, Jennifer Brown
Washington International Law Journal
In Java, Indonesia, only about one-third of land title certificates reflect ownership by women. This lack of registered land ownership can potentially harm women by depriving them of influence within the household and leaving them vulnerable in cases of divorce or a spouse's death. This Article argues that effective land registration mechanisms and legal and social recognition of women's property rights all play a critical role in protecting women's ownership interests. Interviews with landowners and government officials in Java reveal that Indonesia's land registration processes do not effectively advance ownership rights granted under the nation's family law. Despite the government's …

Plasma Total Homocysteine And The Effect Of B-Group Vitmains. Current Knowledge And Future Directions In Assessment For Cardiovascular Diseases Among U.S. Cardiovascular Specialists, Salam F. Sunna
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cardiovascular disease remains the major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States claiming the lives of over 40% of the nearly 2.4 million Americans who die each year. Recent studies have shown that elevated homocysteine in the blood is related to a higher risk of coronary heart disease, peripheral vascular disease and stroke independent of other classical cardiovascular disease risk factors. The aim of this study is to determine the general awareness and acceptance of U.S. cardiovascular specialists of the homocysteine theory, the criteria used for ordering a homocysteine test, the frequency physicians refer patients to dietitians for …

Breaking The Cycle Of Defeat For 'Deadbroke' Noncustodial Parents Through Advocacy On Child Support Issues, Daniel L. Hatcher, Hannah Lieberman
All Faculty Scholarship
The child support system is not serving low-income families well. Custodial parents are not receiving the child support they need. Enforcement of child support for lowincome parents receiving welfare primarily benefits the state because the payments are owed to the government. Low-income noncustodial parents face unrealistically high child support orders and large arrearages take so much of their wages that they cannot support themselves. They go to jail-often recurrently-because they cannot meet their obligations and thereby lose the opportunity to keep a job. Their driver's licenses are suspended because they have not paid their support. To evade this punitive cycle, …
Tree Size And Habitat Effects On Stream Gall Abundance In Conostegia Oerstediana (Melastomataceae), May 2003, Priya Shashidharan
Tree Size And Habitat Effects On Stream Gall Abundance In Conostegia Oerstediana (Melastomataceae), May 2003, Priya Shashidharan
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
The moth Mompha sp. (Coleophoridae, Lepidoptera) is known to induce a stem gall on the tree Conostegia oerstediana (Melastomataceae). There is little known about the distribution and abundance of galls. This study tested the difference in stem gall abundance between varying tree sizes and between two different habitats- pasture and secondary forest. Trees from each habitat were sampled and measured for diameter at breast height (DBH), height, number of branches, and number of galls. A significant difference was found between pasture and forested areas (unpaired t-test, p < 0.0001), with pasture trees having more galls. No relation was found relating tree size (DBH, height, number of branches) to gall abundance. I conclude from these results that tree size is not directly related to stem gall abundance. Instead, differences in habitats, such as predator and parasite abundance and host density, may be important factors that influence gall abundance.
