Fum13 Encodes A Short Chain Dehydrogenase/Reductase Required For C-3 Carbonyl Reduction During Fumonisin Biosynthesis In Gibberella Moniliformis, Robert A. E. Butchko, Ronald D. Plattner, Robert H. Proctor

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Fumonisins are polyketide-derived mycotoxins produced by the filamentous fungus Gibberella moniliformis (anamorph Fusarium verticillioides). Wild-type strains of the fungus produce predominantly four B-series fumonisins, designated FB1, FB2, FB3, and FB4. Recently, a cluster of 15 putative fumonisin biosynthetic genes (FUM) was described in G. moniliformis. We have now conducted a functional analysis of FUM13, a gene in the cluster that is predicted by amino acid sequence similarity to encode a short chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR). Mass spectrometric analysis of metabolites from FUM13 deletion mutants revealed that they produce approximately 10% of …

Where's The Beef? Dissecting Spam's Purported Harms, Eric Goldman Jan 2003

Where's The Beef? Dissecting Spam's Purported Harms, Eric Goldman

Faculty Publications

Virtually everyone seems to agree that spam causes tremendous harm, but there is surprisingly little consensus on exactly what those harms are. This Essay examines various harms that spam purportedly causes to assess if the harm is real and if spam is treated dichotomously compared to other media communications. Based on this analysis, the Essay concludes that many harms purportedly caused by spam are not appropriate policy justifications for regulation.

"Race To The Bottom" Returns: China's Challenge To The International Labor Movement, Stephen F. Diamond Jan 2003

"Race To The Bottom" Returns: China's Challenge To The International Labor Movement, Stephen F. Diamond

Faculty Publications

This article will consider four areas of concern. First, the structural changes underway in the Chinese economy are creating both domestic and international imbalances that exacerbate inequalities among Chinese workers and create new inequities in the global labor market. Second, the Chinese regime's approach to labor rights remains rigidly authoritarian and, as a result, it is triggering ever more dramatic confrontations between workers and the Chinese state, despite the regime's nominal commitment to "socialism." Third, these developments are being reinforced by a pathological evolution in the principles that govern key international institutions such as the WTO and the ILO. A …

Thomas Owen And The Founding Of The Alabama Department Of Archives And History, Alden Monroe Jan 2003

Thomas Owen And The Founding Of The Alabama Department Of Archives And History, Alden Monroe

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

In 1901 Alabama established the first independent government archives in the United States. The founding of the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH) preceded that of the National Archives by more than thirty years. Other states had sponsored history programs, assigning the responsibility for public records to state libraries, secretaries of state, or state historical societies, but Alabama was the first to create an official state agency. This concept of government-supported, but independent, archives would become a model for others in the United States.

Unearthing Personal History: Autoethnography & Artifacts Inform Research On Youth Risk Taking, Diane Conrad Jan 2003

Unearthing Personal History: Autoethnography & Artifacts Inform Research On Youth Risk Taking, Diane Conrad

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

I begin from the premise that research will always be affected by the subjectivity of the researcher, in the choice of research topic and in the interpretation of research findings. My study using Popular Theatre as a participatory, arts-based approach to exploring the risky experiences of youth was further informed by an autoethnographic investigation into my own experiences as a youth, an unearthing of my personal history through autobiographical writing and a (re)collection of artifacts from my youth. My arts-based methods adding a messiness to the research process and findings that reflects the complexity of the issues under investigation.

Commentary: Cancelling The Queers: Heightens National Awareness In Arts Education, Donalyn Heise

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In November 2001, a state art education organization conference session entitled Sexual Identity and Arts Education was canceled. If the original goal of this panel discussion was to bring awareness to issues related to the topic; then, I conclude that the unfortunate cancellation of this session has resulted in exceeding its goal. Had the conference session taken place as planned, issues related to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LCBT) and arts education would have been explored and discussed on the state level (Keifer-Boyd, Fehr, Check, Akins, 2002:). However, because the session was canceled, publicity and subsequent public outrage has heightened …

Comparison Of Education Level, Intelligence Quotient, And Higher Education Courses Of Individuals Who Commit Violent Crimes And Those Individuals Who Commit Nonviolent Crimes In Arkansas, W. Andranette Anderson-Blackwell Jan 2003

Comparison Of Education Level, Intelligence Quotient, And Higher Education Courses Of Individuals Who Commit Violent Crimes And Those Individuals Who Commit Nonviolent Crimes In Arkansas, W. Andranette Anderson-Blackwell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine and compare education levels, intelligence quotients, and college courses taken or are being taken by criminal offenders who commit violent versus nonviolent crimes. One hundred males and 100 females from the states' correctional facilities were used as the sample. The sample was stratified according to four characteristics: type of crime committed (violent or nonviolent), ethnicity, age, and gender. The null hypothesis tested in this study was that there is no statistically significant difference, at the 0.05 level, in the educational levels or intelligence quotients of criminal offenders as to age, ethnicity, gender, …

A Bad Subject, Daria Roithmayr Jan 2003

A Bad Subject, Daria Roithmayr

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article explores the concept of the "bad subject" in legal discourse, arguing that women are often categorized as such because they do not fit the legal definition of a "good subject," which requires full autonomy and self-direction. Women's experiences, influenced by systemic oppression such as patriarchy and racism, complicate this binary, leading to their exclusion from legal protections and recognition of their agency.

Exploiting Multiuser Diversity For Medium Access Control In Wireless Networks, Xiangping Qin, Randall Berry Jan 2003

Exploiting Multiuser Diversity For Medium Access Control In Wireless Networks, Xiangping Qin, Randall Berry

Conference Proceedings

Multiuser diversity refers to a type of diversity present across different users in a fading environment. This diversity can be exploited by scheduling transmissions so that users transmit when their channel conditions are favorable. Using such an approach leads to a system capacity that increases with the number of users. However, such scheduling requires centralized control. In this paper, we consider a decentralized medium access control (MAC) protocol, where each user only has knowledge of its own channel gain. We consider a variation of the ALOHA protocol, channel-aware ALOHA; using this protocol we show that users can still exploit multi-user …

Socia Networks And Political Participation: The Role Of Social Interaction In Explaining Political Participation, Scott D. Mcclurg Jan 2003

Socia Networks And Political Participation: The Role Of Social Interaction In Explaining Political Participation, Scott D. Mcclurg

Publications

The argument advanced in this paper is that interaction in social networks has a strong, though often overlooked, influence on the individual propensity to participate in politics. Specifically, I argue that social interaction creates opportunities for individuals to gather information about politics that allow them to live beyond personal resource constraints, thereby supporting the political activity of many people. Using relational data from the South Bend election survey, this paper provides evidence that the effect of social interaction on participation is contingent on the amount of political discussion that occurs in social networks. Additional analysis shows the substantive and theoretical …

The Evolving E-Business Strategy: Lessons Learned, Anand Jeyaraj, Marius Janson Jan 2003

The Evolving E-Business Strategy: Lessons Learned, Anand Jeyaraj, Marius Janson

Management Information Systems Faculty Publications

Bricks-and-mortar companies wishing to create value-added Internet services do so in a business environment that is characterized by great uncertainty and, hence, formulating a coherent business strategy is exceedingly challenging. This paper presents a case study based analysis of the evolving eBusiness strategy of a bricks-and mortar grocer contrasted with the strategies of other competitors. The grocery company took a logical, measured, incremental, and, ultimately, successful approach to its eBusiness strategy formulation, development, and implementation. Our case study suggests that in an environment characterized by chaotic change bricks-and-mortar companies can benefit from a strategy informed by organizational learning and eBusiness …

Revisiting The Impact Of California's Mandatory Custody Mediation Program On Victims Of Domestic Violence Through A Feminist Positionality Lens, Lauri Boxer-Macomber Jan 2003

Revisiting The Impact Of California's Mandatory Custody Mediation Program On Victims Of Domestic Violence Through A Feminist Positionality Lens, Lauri Boxer-Macomber

St. Thomas Law Review

In 1981, California became the first state in the country to enact mandatory child custody mediation legislation. Today, all family law cases, even those with histories or allegations of domestic violence, are subject to mediation. The legislative intent in promulgating the mandatory custody mediation program was noble. The program was designed to reduce animosity between parents, develop agreements that keep children's best interests paramount, and allow children close and continuing contact with both their parents. However, the question of whether mediation is an appropriate process to use in cases of domestic violence has been widely debated. A significant amount of …

The Great Cookie Caper: Internet Privacy And Target Marketing At Home And Abroad, Jason A. Kotzker

St. Thomas Law Review

Did George Orwell have it all wrong? Is Big Brother really a multinational company with a Web site employing cookies; enabling it to track its visitors' every move? The Internet's popularity as a virtual marketplace and the resulting boom of e-commerce has developed exponentially due to the speed and convenience of on-line shopping and access to information. However, this technological advancement also allows for the collection, storage, and transmittal of personal information. With unlimited access to a vast array of personal information, advertising agencies conduct marketing campaigns targeted at individual e-consumers. Unfortunately, most consumers are unaware that they divulge personal …

Immigration Policy And The Expedited Removal Rule: Equality For Some, Justice For None, Nicholas Merlin Jan 2003

Immigration Policy And The Expedited Removal Rule: Equality For Some, Justice For None, Nicholas Merlin

St. Thomas Law Review

In the aftermath of September 11th, the world questioned how nineteen terrorists could have lived for so long in the United States without being detected. The media, once a champion for immigration woes, denounced immigration policy as a toothless farce, swaying to the pressure of activist groups. Naturally, America heightened its state of alert and tightened its fists, closing its borders until it could implement a system for weeding out "undesirable" aliens and monitoring potential threats to homeland security. Due to those restrictive measures, however, many asylum-seeking groups, which found it difficult to gain access to the United States before …

Centering Race And Ethnicity- Related Issues In Social Sciences Curricula, Joseph F. Sheley Jan 2003

Centering Race And Ethnicity- Related Issues In Social Sciences Curricula, Joseph F. Sheley

Ethnic Studies Review

A 2002 review of the course requirements and electives of Economics, History, Political Science, and Sociology programs in thirty randomly selected state and private, "doctoral-level" and "masters-level" institutions produced 201 courses relating to the study of race-and ethnic-related issues. Only two courses (History offerings on a single campus) were required for completion of a major. While some departments offered "concentrations" with mandated content, the concentrations themselves were elective. Diversity in America today is a truly important component of social (re)organization and change and, thus, a major source of social friction. Why is it, then, that students, those majoring in the …

Race, Sex, And Redemption In Monster's Ball, Celeste Fisher, Carole Wiebe Jan 2003

Race, Sex, And Redemption In Monster's Ball, Celeste Fisher, Carole Wiebe

Ethnic Studies Review

In this paper, we explore the way that interracial relationships between blacks and whites come to be represented as problematic for mainstream audiences. By looking specifically at the film Monster's Ball (2001), we examine how race is used to identify and characterize our culture's standard protagonist, the white male, and at how white male sexuality is constructed through the black female. Particularly striking in this film is how the social and institutional structures that create and reiterate problems of race are used to characterize the movie's central protagonists, yet then evaded and submerged in the discourse of romance.
