Recombinant Expression Of Toxocara Canis Excretory-Secretory Antigen Tes-120 In Escherichia Coli, Mun Yik Fong, Y.L. Lau, Init Ithoi, I. Jamaiah, A.K. Anuar, N. Rahmah
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
The gene encoding the excretory-secretory antigen TES-120 of dog ascarid worm Toxocara canis was cloned into the bacterium Escherichia coli. The specificity of the recombinant TES- 120 antigen produced by the bacterium was investigated.A total of 45 human serum samples from patients infected with different helminthes and protozoa, including 8 cases of toxocariasis, were tested against the recombinant antigens in immunoblot assays. The results from the assays revealed that the recombinant TES-120 antigen reacted with sera from toxocariasis patients only. This highly specific recombinant TES-120 antigen can potentially be used for the development of an inexpensive serodiagnostic assay for human …

Cultural Context Matters: Terry's "Seesaw Effect", Frank Rudy Cooper

This Article investigates why the enforcement of a given legal doctrine may vary with changes in the cultural context in which it is applied. It argues that officials apply the law along an "enforcement practices continuum" in accord with changes in the prevailing articulations of the meaning of cultural identity norms associating particular groups with crime.
Terry v. Ohio doctrine allows police officers to make "stops" and "frisks" of limited scope upon reasonable suspicion of crime rather than requiring the higher standard of probable cause. The Article contends the officer discretion resulting from this "scope continuum" approach permits cultural identity …

Malignant Democracy: Core Fallacies Underlying Election Of The Judiciary, Jeffrey W. Stempel
Malignant Democracy: Core Fallacies Underlying Election Of The Judiciary, Jeffrey W. Stempel
Scholarly Works
There is no requirement of democratic theory that mandates that all public offices be filled by election. This is particularly true in modern democratic states, which are simply too large to justify the administrative burden of electing everyone who has significant responsibilities in our society.
Examples of this are everywhere in modern democracies, such as the United States and Europe. In England, for example, the Prime Minister is not directly elected by the people. Does this mean Great Britain has ceased to be a democracy? In most large, sophisticated nation-states, national cabinet officers have great power but are the political …

Us-Versus-Them: Framing Of Islam And Muslims After 9/11, Kimberly A. Powell, Houda Abadi
Iowa Journal of Communication
The reality created by the media is powerful enough to create lasting images and stereotypes about groups, religions and peoples (Maslog, 1971). That the Western media is biased in issues regarding the Arab world is accepted as fact in the Middle East, though denied by reporters in the West (Baroud, 2002). In a 2002 poll of Muslim Americans, 67% said the media have grown more biased against Muslims after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 (CAIR, 2002). This study aimed to discover what narrative frames the media created of Muslims and Islam in the three months following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The use of estrogens in postmenopausal women has become controversial. Estrogen replacement therapy has been used for many years to slow the progression of atherosclerosis. However, recent clinical studies have shown that menopausal women on hormone replacement therapy have higher incidences of myocardial infarctions and strokes than their counterparts without the therapy. Other studies have demonstrated that a decrease in collagen content in advanced atherosclerotic lesions may weaken the structural integrity of these lesions, resulting in rupture and clot formation. Within lesions, vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) actively synthesize collagen and other types of extracellular matrix proteins during atherogenesis. Estrogen, …
