Weathering Of Sulfidic Shale And Copper Mine Waste: Secondary Minerals And Metal Cycling In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, And North Carolina, Usa, Jane M. Hammarstrom, Robert R. Seal Ii, Allen L. Meier, John C. Jackson

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Metal cycling via physical and chemical weathering of discrete sources (copper mines) and regional (non-point) sources (sulfide-rich shale) is evaluated by examining the mineralogy and chemistry of weathering products in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, and North Carolina, USA. The elements in copper mine waste, secondary minerals, stream sediments, and waters that are most likely to have negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems are aluminum, copper, zinc, and arsenic because these elements locally exceed toxicity guidelines for surface waters or for stream sediments. Acid-mine drainage has not developed in streams draining inactive copper mines. Acid-rock drainage and chemical weathering processes …

Homeland Security, Pesticide Regulation And Common Household Chemicals: Are We Adequately Protecting All Our Sources, Leticia M. Diaz

Faculty Scholarship

In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, legislators, business owners, consumers and everyday citizens, all with a view of how to protect our interests, voiced their opinions on how to improve national security with patriotic zest. FIFRA's main purpose is to ensure federal regulation of pesticide distribution and use. This power is of particular importance given the terroristic threat of possible chemical warfare. Chemical professionals were cognizant of the importance of site security even prior to the September 11th terrorist attacks. With respect to the risk of terrorist attacks using pesticides or other chemical agents, EPA …

Tum The Wheel: Integral School Counseling For Male Adolescents, David Forbes

Publications and Research

In the wake of violent episodes committed by male youths in schools, many male adolescents grapple with the traditional norm of masculinity and the role it might play in contributing to such violence. School counselors need to address the developmental needs of all male youth, because schools play a significant role in the construction of male identities. This article formulates an overarching, inclusive model of integral counseling that enables school counselors to help male adolescents challenge the norm of conventional masculinity. The model draws from 3 areas: transpersonal counseling, holistic education, and mindful social action. The aim is to move …

Beyond The Business Judgment Rule: Protecting Bidder Firm Shareholders From Value-Reducing Acquisitions, Ryan Houseal Jan 2003

Beyond The Business Judgment Rule: Protecting Bidder Firm Shareholders From Value-Reducing Acquisitions, Ryan Houseal

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

During the takeover transactions of the 1980s, bidder firms paid target firm shareholders average premiums of approximately 50% for their shares. Did the sizable premiums paid to target firm shareholders during the 1980s reflect post-takeover improvement in the target's performance? Or were the premiums a result of the mismanagement of the bidder firms' assets?

The answer will help determine whether additional legal mechanisms should be established to protect bidder firm shareholders from the threat of management's consummation of value reducing acquisitions. Accordingly, this Note examines various studies which attempt to identify the source of the premiums paid to target firm …

Hypertonic Stress Co-Stimulates T Cell Il-2 Expression Through A Feedback Mechanism Involving Atp Release And P2 Receptor Activation Of P38 Map Kinase, William H. Loomis, Sachiko Namiki, Rennolds S. Ostrom, Paul A. Insel, Wolfgang G. Junger Jan 2003

Hypertonic Stress Co-Stimulates T Cell Il-2 Expression Through A Feedback Mechanism Involving Atp Release And P2 Receptor Activation Of P38 Map Kinase, William H. Loomis, Sachiko Namiki, Rennolds S. Ostrom, Paul A. Insel, Wolfgang G. Junger

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Hypertonic stress (HS) can alter the function of mammalian cells. We have reported that HS enhances differentiated responses of T cells by increasing their ability to produce interleukin (IL)-2, a finding of clinical interest because hypertonic infusions may modulate immune function in patients. HS shrinks cells and mechanically deforms membranes, which results in ATP release from many cell types. Here we investigate if ATP release is an underlying mechanism through which HS augments T cell function. We found that mechanical stress and HS induced rapid ATP release from Jurkat T cells. HS and exogenous ATP mobilized intracellular Ca2+, activated p38 …

Commentary By Angelina Khaminwa, Angelina Khaminwa

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

There is an organization in England called the Conciliation Resources and they put together a publication called The Court on a regular basis. They put together a special series in 1999 that reflected on the peace process in Northern Ireland. One of the authors of the article, Klem McCarthney, wrote a piece from which I will quote: "many who did not support a predominant system of sectarian politics found their sphere of activism in the trade unions, churches and neighborhoods, but they had little impact on the overall political situation. Most sectarianism society including the churches, were themselves divided about …

Mechanisms Of Arsenate Adsorption By Highly-Ordered Nano-Structured Silicate Media Impregnated With Metal Oxides, M. Jang, E.W. Shin, J.K. Park, S.I. Choi Jan 2003

Mechanisms Of Arsenate Adsorption By Highly-Ordered Nano-Structured Silicate Media Impregnated With Metal Oxides, M. Jang, E.W. Shin, J.K. Park, S.I. Choi

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

The highly ordered mesoporous silica media, SBA-15, was synthesized and incorporated with iron, aluminum, and zinc oxides using an incipient wetness impregnation technique. Adsorption capacities and kinetics of metal-impregnated SBA-15 were compared with activated alumina which is widely used for arsenic removal. Media impregnated with 10 of aluminum by weight (designated to Al 10SBA-15) had 1.9-2.7 times greater arsenate adsorption capacities in a wide range of initial arsenate concentrations and a 15 times greater initial sorption rate at ph 7.2 than activated alumina. By employing one- and two-site models, surface complexation modeling was conducted to investigate the relationship between the …

Rare Actinomycetes In Mangrove Soils And Leaf Litter, S. Vikineswary, A. Ismet, Kwai Lin Thong, S. Paramaswari

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Actinomycetes are one of the major sources for the discovery of novel bioactive compounds. A total of 226 actinomycete strains were isolated from Morib mangrove soils and leaf litter samples in Malaysia. The actinomycete populations ranged from 6.0 x lO" to 20.0 x 10' colony-forming units (cfu)/g dry sample. Total populations and tentative distributions of actinomycetes varied significantly with the different types of mangrove samples. The tentative genus diversity in mangrove soil and leaf litter was Micromonospora, 49%; Streptosporangium, l7%; Streptomgces, 7%; Actinomadura, 4%; Saccharomonospora, 2% and others (Microbispora, Nocardia, Dactylosporangium and Actinoplanes) 2O%. Micromonospora and Streptosporangium were the dominant …
