Integrity In Learner–Centered Teaching, Douglas Reimondo Robertson Jan 2003

Integrity In Learner–Centered Teaching, Douglas Reimondo Robertson

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Learner-centered teaching challenges teachers with inherent conflicts and can be viewed as a conflicted educational helping relationship. This chapter explores fundamental conflicts in learner-centered teaching as well as ways to handle them constructively. Learner-centered teacher integrity is seen as the degree to which contradictory demands on the teacher (e.g., facilitating learning as well as evaluating it) are brought into synergistic relationship. A process for enhancing these synergies is suggested. This discussion emerges from a line of work that attempts to further develop the learner-centered teaching role in higher education (Robertson, 1996, 1997, 1999a, 1999b, 2000a, 2000b, 2000c, 2001).

A Matrix For Reconsidering, Reassessing, And Shaping E–Learning Pedagogy And Curriculum, Laura Bush, Barry Maid, Duane Roen Jan 2003

A Matrix For Reconsidering, Reassessing, And Shaping E–Learning Pedagogy And Curriculum, Laura Bush, Barry Maid, Duane Roen

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Educational stakeholders are increasingly engaged in discussions about the effective design, distribution, and evaluation of e-learning. We invite educators to build on already existing scholarship as they make future e-learning decisions. Specifically, we combine four categories of academic scholarship from Boyer (1990) with six assessment criteria from Glassick, Huber, and Maeroff (1997) to construct a matrix that may be applied to any post-secondary learning or teaching context. We argue that while each medium in which faculty might find themselves teaching differs from others, the teaching itself, and effective teaching in general, is definable and, therefore, can be evaluated using the …

Property Rights, Federalism, And The Public Rights-Of-Way, Frederick E. Ellrod Iii, Nicholas P. Miller Jan 2003

Property Rights, Federalism, And The Public Rights-Of-Way, Frederick E. Ellrod Iii, Nicholas P. Miller

Seattle University Law Review

This introductory section describes how section 253 works, and notes that the importance of local right-of-way management has increased since September 2001. Section II of the Article identifies the fundamental property rights at issue, their implications for compensation requirements, and their relationship to constitutional federalism. Section III then looks briefly at the characteristic mistake made by many analysts: construing local communities' control of their public rights-of-way as purely regulatory and ignoring the property aspect. Section IV explores in more depth the way in which section 253 fits into the structure of property rights, regulation, and federalism, by detailing the legislative …

(Un)Examined Assumptions And (Un)Intended Messages: Teaching Students To Recognize Bias In Legal Analysis And Language , Lorraine Bannai, Anne Enquist

Seattle University Law Review

This article discusses how law school, specifically through legal writing courses, can address cultural bias and its effect on legal analysis and language. Part I addresses why the law school curriculum should aid students in recognizing expressions of bias in legal analysis and language. Part II discusses how bias typically appears in legal language, as well as how it may infect legal analysis and argument, and suggests ways of teaching students to recognize it in a legal writing course. Part III addresses challenges that may be faced in teaching the material, including suggestions for handling discussions of potentially sensitive subjects.

Stretching The Equal Access Act Beyond Equal Access, Aaron H. Caplan Jan 2003

Stretching The Equal Access Act Beyond Equal Access, Aaron H. Caplan

Seattle University Law Review

This article explores the ramifications of stretching the Equal Access Act ("EAA" or "the Act") beyond equal access to school premises for meetings during noninstructional time. Part I provides background on the Equal Access Act, from its legislative origins through its interpretations by federal courts. This part includes a careful look at the statute's often confusing language. Part II describes and criticizes Prince v. Jacoby. I argue that the decision is plagued with legal errors large and small, but that the main error is its failure to consider a central question: equal access to what? Both the EAA and …

Influence Of Three Soil Types On The Physical, Chemical, And Organoleptic Characteristics Of Two Varieties Of Kidney Tomato Hydroponically Cultivated Under A Panqar Huyu System, Carlos Fernando Yepez Vallejo Jan 2003

Influence Of Three Soil Types On The Physical, Chemical, And Organoleptic Characteristics Of Two Varieties Of Kidney Tomato Hydroponically Cultivated Under A Panqar Huyu System, Carlos Fernando Yepez Vallejo

Theses and Dissertations

One of the largest problems that face communities located high in the Andres Mountain range is the lack of crop diversity due to the climate characteristics of this zone. Because of this, the Benson Institute created a small subterranean greenhouse called a "panqar-huyu," which in Aymara means "flower garden," that allows cultivation of small and medium-sized crops. This study's objective is to modify and adapt this system to cultivate table (kidney) tomatoes, for which one was enlarged, a drip irrigation system was installed, channels were dug to drain groundwater from the interior, etc. This study was done in the community …

A Historical Multi-Case Study Of Five Women Who Experienced Pregnancy As Unmarried Teens, Marilyn Valerio Jan 2003

A Historical Multi-Case Study Of Five Women Who Experienced Pregnancy As Unmarried Teens, Marilyn Valerio

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Multi-case study methodology was used to explore the experiences of five women from five different decades who became pregnant as unmarried teens. This historical view was developed by interviewing paI1icipants about family. social. and cultural contexts in which the event occurred. A clearer understanding of teen pregnancy resulted when the participants' stories were triangulated with decade literature. Four themes emerged: How They Got There. What Followed. Lifelong Impact, and Literature Over Time. The study supported the need for families and communities to engage in meaningful dialogue with their youth and to implement strategies that foster primary prevention of teen pregnancy. …

Change As The Convergence Of Energies: Using The Lens Of Postmodern Thinking To Examine Change In Higher Education, Linda Hamption Weston, Jeanne Gray Carr Jan 2003

Change As The Convergence Of Energies: Using The Lens Of Postmodern Thinking To Examine Change In Higher Education, Linda Hamption Weston, Jeanne Gray Carr

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Post modern thought, in particular dynamic systems theory, offers explanations for the profound era in which we live. Defining myself as an educational leader with a post modern visionary perspective, I have deconstructed a change effort in higher education to demonstrate the developmental process that took place within me when I acted as an educational change agent. As part of this story, I have added the voice of an executive coach, who volunteered her services to the university and worked with me during the second semester of this change effort. This effort is analogous to a river that is constantly …

Investment Prospects In Ukraine: Transition From A Planned To Market Economy, Teodor Kostandinov Penov Jan 2003

Investment Prospects In Ukraine: Transition From A Planned To Market Economy, Teodor Kostandinov Penov

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The Soviet economy and how it operated successfully to make it one of the world superpowers in the world under the socialist regime still is unclear to many people around the world, and especially those outside the vast territories of Soviet influence. The country of Ukraine was one of those countries, which makes it very important to understand why the country is at the position it presently finds itself in. Thus, to help us better understand the Ukrainian economy we will look into the history of the Soviet Union.

Court Review: Volume 39, Issue 4 - The Federal Sentencing Guidelines: An Infectious Antidote, Rosalind Alexis Sargent

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

Why should a bank robber in California get a different sentence than a bank robber in Texas? This was the rallying cry behind the legislative implementation of the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. The Senate Judiciary Committee found that a major source of the astounding variations in federal sentencing for identical crimes was the “judge factor.” Federal judges had the discretion to select a sentence from anywhere within a broad statutory range for each offense. The judge had the sole responsibility of assessing each individual offender and deciding where, within that broad range, the offender should receive a sentence. As a result, …

Terrorism And Insurance Markets: A Role For The Government As Insurer?, Alan O. Sykes Jan 2003

Terrorism And Insurance Markets: A Role For The Government As Insurer?, Alan O. Sykes

Articles

Since September 11, 2001, insurance markets have been struggling to adjust to new information about the magnitude of risks posed by terrorism, and to the loss of tens of billions of dollars in reserves because of claims relating to the September 11 attacks. Insurance coverage for terror-related losses has become more expensive and for some risks difficult or impossible to obtain. As a result, various interest groups called for the federal government to provide coverage for terrorism losses, resulting in the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act of 2002. We question the wisdom of measures of this sort. They are likely to …
