Nanocharacterization Of Bio-Silica Using Atomic Force And Ultrasonic Force Microscopy, Vinaypreet Singh Gill

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Today, nanotechnology has become central to our research efforts in order to come up with smaller and smaller devices, which are more versatile than their older and bigger predecessors. MEMS devices, biosensors, nanocomposites are some of the examples of these devices. To realize the goal of fabricating these devices newer materials and novel techniques to manufacture these materials at spatial scales, heretofore unseen, are required. Also, we need to know the mechanical properties of these materials at nanoscales and we have to strive for environmentally benign ways of achieving these production goals. Silica is a very important material in this …

Letters To America: Dialectical Epistolarity In Post 9/11 Advertising, Gary W. Larson, Lawrence J. Mullen Jan 2003

Letters To America: Dialectical Epistolarity In Post 9/11 Advertising, Gary W. Larson, Lawrence J. Mullen

Iowa Journal of Communication

In the weeks after 9/11, businesses sought to reconnect with their clients and colleagues through ads in the New York Times, a number of which were framed as letters. Drawing on the literatures of epistolary critique, visual meaning, and rhetorical criticism, we explore the strategy of framing ads as letters. We use Peirce's typology to classify the ads into iconic, indexical or symbolic frames. Our initial assumption that more graphically iconic ads would rely less on textual metaphor and vice versa, is confirmed. Finally, we encourage the consideration of epistolary rhetoric as a critical tool of analysis.

Visualized Narratives: Editorial Cartoonists Respond To 9/11, Janis L. Edwards Jan 2003

Visualized Narratives: Editorial Cartoonists Respond To 9/11, Janis L. Edwards

Iowa Journal of Communication

The violent episodes of September 11th were occasions where visual domains dominated, helping to shape the interpretation of events as an "Attack on America." An examination of the depictive rhetoric used by political cartoonists to place 9/11 in larger interpretive frame works reveals developing narratives of national unity, heroism, and patriotic sacrifice that reflect and contribute to a nationalistic ethos and a nostalgia for a mythic interpretation of terrorist acts as acts of war. The role of editorial cartoons in the construction and maintenance of social and political values is underscored.

Using Grunig's Situational Theory Of Publics To Investigate How Convention & Visitors Bureaus Across The Nation Are Employing Communication Tactics In The Wake Of September 11th, Lisa T. Fall Jan 2003

Using Grunig's Situational Theory Of Publics To Investigate How Convention & Visitors Bureaus Across The Nation Are Employing Communication Tactics In The Wake Of September 11th, Lisa T. Fall

Iowa Journal of Communication

This study identifies communication techniques (channels) being employed more now, compared to before the September 11 attacks, among convention and visitors bureau (CVB) managers. Two frameworks were used as the basis for the study: the situational theory, developed by Grunig (1978, 1979a); and the theoretical underpinnings of McLuhan's (1964, 1967) critical-cultural perspective "the medium is the message," positing that the channel itself makes its own contribution to the communication process. Results (n = 184) indicate that since the attacks, CVB managers are using the Internet and PR/media relations tactics more frequently and advertising tactics less frequently.

How Well Does The Wto Settle Disputes?, Susan Esserman, Robert L. Howse

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)

Last fall, a judicial panel of the WorldTrade Organization (WTO) issued a controversial ruling in a high-stakes corporate tax dispute between the United States and the European Union. Paying scant attention to the complexities of the case, the panel authorized Brussels to implement retaliatory sanction of $4 billion - an unprecedented sum - against Washington. Notably, around the same time the United States and its European allies were also making headlines with another fierce legal battle: over the authority of the International Criminal Court to prosecute American soldiers for alleged misdeeds committed abroad.

Yahoo! Cyber-Collision Of Cultures: Who Regulates?, Horatia Muir Watt Jan 2003

Yahoo! Cyber-Collision Of Cultures: Who Regulates?, Horatia Muir Watt

Michigan Journal of International Law

This Article furthers this comparison of cyberconflicts and the real world, attempting to ascertain what lessons, if any, can be drawn from it. Part I of the Article explores the interests at stake in cyberconflicts and the relationship between technology and the law. Part II uses the French Yahoo! court's decision to show that real-world conceptions of prescriptive jurisdiction retain their legitimacy in cyberspace. Finally, Part III notes that the prospect of near perfect compliance offered by Internet technology provides the opportunity to engineer mature, well-calibrated solutions to international regulatory conflicts, which might then even serve as a model in …

Statistical Probability As A Metaphor For Epistemological Probability, L. David Ritchie Jan 2003

Statistical Probability As A Metaphor For Epistemological Probability, L. David Ritchie

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

The metaphor, "epistemological probability is statistical probability" is traced to the origins of probability theory. Related metaphors appear both in everyday discourse about social processes, and in social scientific argumentation, often disguised as literal claims. Gambling provides a familiar vehicle for expressing the uncertainties associated with social interactions, and with social science research. Examples are drawn from reports of research on media effects, from everyday conversations, and from political communication.
