Nationalism, Sectarianism, And The Future Of The U.S. Presence In Post-Saddam Iraq, W. Andrew Terrill Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author addresses the critical questions involved in understanding the background of Iraqi national identity and the ways in which it may evolve in the future to either the favor or detriment of the United States. He pays particular attention to the issue of Iraqi sectarianism and the emerging role of the Shi'ite Muslims, noting the power of an emerging but fractionalized clergy. This report includes policy recommendations for U.S. military and civilian decision makers that helps to illuminate the complex subjects of Iraqi nationalism and sectarianism and their relevance to the U.S. presence in Iraq.

Why They Fight: Combat Motivation In The Iraq War, Thomas A. Kolditz Col, Leonard Wong Dr., Raymond A. Millen Ltc, Terrence M. Potter Col

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

With the recent lightning swift combat successes of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, there may be a tendency to view with awe the lethality of U.S. technology and training. The researchers, however, argue that the true strength of America's military might lies not in its hardware or high-tech equipment, but in its soldiers. Dr. Leonard Wong and his colleagues traveled to Iraq to see what motivated soldiers to continue in battle, to face extreme danger, and to risk their lives in accomplishing the mission. As a means of comparison, they began by interviewing Iraqi Regular Army prisoners of war to examine their …

Fragmented Copyright, Fragmented Management: Proposals To Defrag Copyright Management, Daniel J. Gervais, Alana Maurushat Jul 2003

Fragmented Copyright, Fragmented Management: Proposals To Defrag Copyright Management, Daniel J. Gervais, Alana Maurushat

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The collective management of copyright in Canada was conceived as a solution to alleviate the problem of inefficiency of individual rights management. Creators could not license, collect and enforce copyright efficiently on an individual basis. Requiring users to obtain permission from individual copyright holders for the use of a work was equally inefficient. Collectives, therefore, emerged to facilitate the clearance of rights between creators and users. Even with the facilitation of collectives in the process, clearing rights remains an inherently difficult and convoluted process. This is especially so in the age of the Internet where clearing rights for multimedia products …

Applicability Of Risk-Based Management And The Need For Risk-Based Economic Decision Analysis At Hazardous Waste Contaminated Sites, I. Khadam, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi Jul 2003

Applicability Of Risk-Based Management And The Need For Risk-Based Economic Decision Analysis At Hazardous Waste Contaminated Sites, I. Khadam, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Decision analysis in subsurface contamination management is generally carried out through a traditional engineering economic viewpoint. However, new advances in human health risk assessment, namely, the probabilistic risk assessment, and the growing awareness of the importance of soft data in the decision-making process, require decision analysis methodologies that are capable of accommodating non-technical and politically biased qualitative information. In this work, we discuss the major limitations of the currently practiced decision analysis framework, which evolves around the definition of risk and cost of risk, and its poor ability to communicate risk-related information. A demonstration using a numerical example was conducted …

Introduction, Peter K. Yu Jul 2003

Introduction, Peter K. Yu

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The introduction explores the challenges of protecting traditional knowledge, folklore, and indigenous practices within the global intellectual property framework. It argues that the success of such protection depends on selecting the appropriate international forum for negotiations, fostering a nonzero-sum mindset among negotiators, addressing cognitive barriers, and ensuring the active participation of indigenous communities. The introduction emphasizes the need for a balanced approach that considers the diverse interests of various stakeholders, including developed and developing countries, indigenous peoples, and international organizations.

Legal Protection Of Indigenous Culture In Australia, Ronald Sackville

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article examines the legal protection of Indigenous culture in Australia, highlighting both progress and persistent challenges. While significant strides have been made, such as constitutional amendments and the recognition of native title, the legal system still struggles to adequately protect Indigenous cultural rights, particularly in reconciling them with existing intellectual property and heritage protection frameworks.

Study Of Geometric Effects On Local Corrosion Rates For Lbe Loop, Chao Wu Jul 2003

Study Of Geometric Effects On Local Corrosion Rates For Lbe Loop, Chao Wu

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Corrosion is an extremely important issue in nuclear cooling system applications. Many scientific and engineering efforts have been contributed to the research of finding an ideal material, which has resistance to corrosive Lead Bismuth Eutectic (LBE). A Delta Loop was designed and constructed in Los Alamos National Lab (LANL) to obtain the experimental data. This loop is a multi-section closed system that differs in diameter from one part to another. As a result, an intensive study on the geometry effect is hence necessary and valuable. In this thesis, this problem was simulated by commercial software STAR-CD. Results provide a good …

E-Health: A New Approach In Healthcare Practice, Vinod K. Podichetty, Robert S. Biscup Jul 2003

E-Health: A New Approach In Healthcare Practice, Vinod K. Podichetty, Robert S. Biscup

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

The Internet offers an unprecedented opportunity for healthcare information to be disseminated instantaneously. Quality of information, both scientific and nonscientific, and the development of tools to disseminate information securely via the Internet are the two most important issues related to achieving effective and wider exchange of health information. For the first time ever, information can be exchanged simultaneously and interactively all around the world, with the potential of being equally available to healthcare professionals as well as to patients. The big difference between yesterday's knowledge-based patient care and that of tomorrow, is a fundamental premise that patients will explore the …

The Low Vision Rehabilitative Service, Part One: Understanding Low Vision, Joseph J. Pizzimenti

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Allied health professionals are becoming increasingly adept at identifying persons that are living with low vision. Low vision rehabilitation is among the emerging areas of practice for various allied health care providers. This paper, the first of a two-part feature, provides background information that will help the allied health professional to better understand the person who will be receiving these services. The paper discusses the impact of functional vision loss, and presents a four-phase, interdisciplinary model of low vision services that can be applied to any setting, whether clinical or non-clinical. Finally, this paper describes the potential roles of the …

Ethical Impact Of Changes In Health Care On The Role Of Medicine In Society And The Physician - Patient Relationship, Albert Simon Jul 2003

Ethical Impact Of Changes In Health Care On The Role Of Medicine In Society And The Physician - Patient Relationship, Albert Simon

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Patients contact a myriad of different health care personnel in their trek through the American health care system. In the 1950s on the numerous TV shows about medicine, it was easy to discern “who was who” in the health care cast of characters in these portrayals. The physicians, like Dr. Kildare, were always male, clean cut and serious looking. Nurses wore starched white dresses with nursing caps and distinctive pins; they instantly obeyed the doctor’s orders (including the one to make the doctor a cup of coffee). For better or worse it is a different world now than it was …

A Forward-Backward Fluence Model For The Low-Energy Neutron Boltzmann Equation, Gary Alan Feldman Jul 2003

A Forward-Backward Fluence Model For The Low-Energy Neutron Boltzmann Equation, Gary Alan Feldman

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

In this research work, the neutron Boltzmann equation was separated into two coupled integro-differential equations describing forward and backward neutron fluence in selected materials. Linear B-splines were used to change the integro-differential equations into a coupled system of ordinary differential equations (O.D.E.'s). Difference approximations were then used to recast the O.D.E.'s into a coupled system of linear equations that were solved for forward and backward neutron fluences. Adding forward and backward fluences gave the total fluence at selected energies and depths in the material. Neutron fluences were computed in single material shields and in a shield followed by a target …

Analytical Ise Calculation And Optimum Control System Design, Tony Kealy, Aidan O'Dwyer Jul 2003

Analytical Ise Calculation And Optimum Control System Design, Tony Kealy, Aidan O'Dwyer

Conference papers

Abstract – In control system theory, a performance index is a quantitative measure of the performance of a system and is chosen so that emphasis is given to the important system parameters. In this paper, the authors demonstrate two methods to determine analytically the Integral of the Square of the Error (ISE) performance index value for a first-order-plus-dead-time (FOPDT) process model under PI control. The ability of proportional/integral (PI) and proportional/integral/derivative (PID) controllers to compensate most practical industrial processes has led to their wide acceptance in industrial applications. The most direct way to set up PI/PID controller parameters is the …

Radiation Of Black Beauty: Perceptions Of Self-Esteem And Self-Efficacy Based On Facial Attractiveness And Skin-Tone Of African Americans, Solomon Luckett, Jr.

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The phenomenon of radiating beauty refers to the positive perception people have of an individual who is closely associated with a person of high facial attractiveness. This study examined the radiating beauty effect in the African American community. The historical perspective of skin tone and its role in intra-racial physical attraction among African Americans was explored. Specifically, this study investigated the possibility of the radiating beauty phenomenon in the African American community and the effects of attractiveness and skin tone. Thirty African American females were recruited for a validation study to establish empirically the degree of facial attractiveness and skin …
