The Influence Of Mass Media Use On Individual Opinions Of Courts, Steven John Briggs Aug 2003

The Influence Of Mass Media Use On Individual Opinions Of Courts, Steven John Briggs

Student Work

This study analyses the influence of media consumption, specifically an individual's viewing of television and their reading of newspapers, on their perceptions of how the court system deals with suspected criminals during sentencing. Data are analyzed from the 1993 General Social Survey (GSS), which is a nationwide survey administered by the National Opinion Research Council (NORC) on a semi-annual basis. The variables related to mass media use are based on self-reporting. Two explanations, frequently cited in the criminal justice literature, the cultivation hypothesis (Gerbner et al., 1978) and Fiske’s (1986) and subcultural identities, also known as interpretive communities, will be …

Judging The Next Emergency: Judicial Review And Individual Rights In Times Of Crisis, David Cole Aug 2003

Judging The Next Emergency: Judicial Review And Individual Rights In Times Of Crisis, David Cole

Michigan Law Review

As virtually every law student who studies Marbury v. Madison learns, Chief Justice John Marshall's tactical genius was to establish judicial review in a case where the result could not be challenged. As a technical matter, Marbury lost, and the executive branch won. As furious as President Jefferson reportedly was with the decision, there was nothing he could do about it, for there was no mandate to defy. The Court's decision offered no remedy for Marbury himself, whose rights were directly at issue, and whose rights the Court found had indeed been violated. But over time, it became clear that …

Anonymity And The Supreme Court's Model Of Expression: How Should Anonymity Be Analysed Under Section 2(B) Of The Charter?, Peter Carmichael Keen Aug 2003

Anonymity And The Supreme Court's Model Of Expression: How Should Anonymity Be Analysed Under Section 2(B) Of The Charter?, Peter Carmichael Keen

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

The first part of this article will discuss what anonymity is, and the costs and benefits that anonymity confers on expressive activity. I will demonstrate that anonymity is a double-edged sword in that it can both promote and harm free expression. In the second part, I will suggest that there is no doubt that anonymity can be protected under section 2(b) of the Charter. When I first began this article, I intended to examine ‘‘whether’’ anonymity can be constitutionally protected under section 2(b). As my research progressed, I quickly realised that I was asking the wrong question. I discovered that …

Broadcast Scheduling For Mobile Advertising, Bert De Reyck, Zeger Degraeve Aug 2003

Broadcast Scheduling For Mobile Advertising, Bert De Reyck, Zeger Degraeve

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We describe a broadcast scheduling system developed for a precision marketing firm specialized in location-sensitive permission-based mobile advertising using SMS (Short Message Service) text messaging. Text messages containing advertisements were sent to registered customers when they were shopping in one of two shopping centers in the vicinity of London. The ads typically contained a limited-time promotional offer. The company's problem was deciding which ads to send out to which customers at what particular time, given a limited capacity of broadcast time slots, while maximizing customer response and revenues from retailers paying for each ad broadcast. We solved the problem using …

War In The Balkans, 1991-2002, R. Craig Nation Dr. Aug 2003

War In The Balkans, 1991-2002, R. Craig Nation Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author writes a comprehensive history of the Balkan wars which were provoked by the collapse of the Yugoslav Federation in 1991. These wars, and the instability that they have provoked, became preoccupations for international security management through the 1990s. After an initial phase of distancing and hesitation, Balkan conflict drew the United States and its most important European allies into an open-ended commitment to peace enforcement, conflict management, and peace-building in the region, importantly supported by the U.S. Army. These efforts are still underway, and significant tensions and potential flashpoints remain in place within former Yugoslavia and the entire …

Effect Of Kerr Nonlinearity On Defect Lasing Modes In Weakly Disordered Photonic Crystals, Boyang Liu, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao Aug 2003

Effect Of Kerr Nonlinearity On Defect Lasing Modes In Weakly Disordered Photonic Crystals, Boyang Liu, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We studied the effect of Kerr nonlinearity on lasing in defect modes of weakly disordered photonic crystals. Our time-independent calculation based on self-consistent nonlinear transfer matrix method shows that Kerr nonlinearity modifies both frequencies and quality factors of defect modes. We also used a time-dependent algorithm to investigate the dynamic nonlinear effect. Under continuous pumping, the spatial sizes and intensities of defect lasing modes are changed by Kerr nonlinearity. Such changes are sensitive to the nonlinear response time.

Density Of Resonant States And A Manifestation Of Photonic Band Structure In Small Clusters Of Spherical Particles, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao Aug 2003

Density Of Resonant States And A Manifestation Of Photonic Band Structure In Small Clusters Of Spherical Particles, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We introduce a numerical recipe for calculating the density of the resonant states of the clusters of dielectric spheres. Using truncated multipole expansions (generalized multisphere Mie solution) we obtain the scattering matrix of the problem. By introducing an infinitesimal absorption in the spheres we express the dwell time of the electromagnetic wave in terms of the elements of the scattering matrix. Using the parameters in recent light localization experiments [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 153901 (2001)], we demonstrate that the density of the resonant states, related to the dwell time, shows the formation of the photonic band structure in small clusters …

Dynamic Nonlinear Effect On Lasing In A Random Medium, Boyang Liu, Alexey Yamilov, Yong Ling, Junying Xu, Hui Cao Aug 2003

Dynamic Nonlinear Effect On Lasing In A Random Medium, Boyang Liu, Alexey Yamilov, Yong Ling, Junying Xu, Hui Cao

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have studied both experimentally and numerically the dynamic effect of nonlinearity on lasing in disordered medium. The third-order nonlinearity not only changes the frequency and size of lasing modes, but also modifies the laser emission intensity and laser pulse width. When the nonlinear response time is longer than the lifetime of the lasing mode, the nonlinearity changes the laser output through modifying the size of the lasing mode. When the nonlinear response is faster than the buildup of the lasing mode, positive nonlinearity always extracts more laser emission from the random medium due to the enhancement of single particle …

Molecular Pharmacology Of Somatostatin Receptors, Fredric C. Mazza Aug 2003

Molecular Pharmacology Of Somatostatin Receptors, Fredric C. Mazza

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Somatostatin (somatotropin release inhibitory factor, SRIF), inhibits animal cell secretion and proliferation. SRIF is transcribed from a single gene as a 1 t 6 amino acid that in precursor is cleaved a cell specific manner into two distinct peptides, SRIF-14 and SRIF-28. Each binds with high affinity to all five known SRIF-receptor subtypes (sst, - ssts) and several of these receptor subtypes are endogenously expressed in the AtT-20 cell, a murine pituitary corticotroph. SRIF receptors belong to the G protein-coupled family of integral membrane receptors. Within the SRIF receptor family, it has been shown that the sst, receptor subtype exists …

Student Protector, Internet Provider, Or Contractual Party? An Examination Of The Legal Relationship Between A University And Its Students, Anna Christine Milot Aug 2003

Student Protector, Internet Provider, Or Contractual Party? An Examination Of The Legal Relationship Between A University And Its Students, Anna Christine Milot

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

The legal relationship between a university and its students is becoming increasingly complex as the use of technology spreads. Accordingly, it is important to define a university’s responsibilities and legal boundaries in order to understand the liability universities can potentially incur when dealing with students. Each Canadian university is unique in its founding and enacting legislation, as will be discussed further later. The individuality of Canada’s universities means that the questions raised in this paper cannot be given answers that can necessarily be generalized across universities. The approach to analysis in this paper, however, is applicable to any of the …

Permeability And Strength Of Artificially Controlled Porous Media, Suresh Pasumarty Aug 2003

Permeability And Strength Of Artificially Controlled Porous Media, Suresh Pasumarty

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Oil well industry has been using hydraulic fracturing to open new channels and thus increase well productivity. Materials known as Proppants are injected into the fracture to keep the channels conductive after the applied hydraulic pressure is removed. But the proppants used to date are often crushed under the influence of rock closures, which leads to clogging of the channel.;The main objective of this study was to model a material that would be able to withstand the rock closure stresses and also remain conductive. A three-dimensional finite element model was developed to study the effects of the shape and the …

Effect Of Temperature Variations On Premature Cracking Of Dowel Jointed Concrete Pavements, Gergis W. William Aug 2003

Effect Of Temperature Variations On Premature Cracking Of Dowel Jointed Concrete Pavements, Gergis W. William

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Dowel jointed concrete pavements exhibit premature top-down transverse cracking at mid slab leading to a dramatic decrease in pavement service life. In the past, such cracks were attributed to combined stresses caused by the temperature differential through the slab thickness and heavy vehicle joint loading. This reasoning failed to explain transverse cracking of Palmdale, California slabs (developed before opening the pavement to traffic ) as well as the transverse cracks on I-80 in Pennsylvania, USA that appeared after one to two years of construction. In this study nonlinear 3D Finite Element (3DFE) analysis that includes detailed consideration of slab constraints …
