Influence Of Aluminum Ion On The Anaerobic Treatment Of A Poultry Slaughterhouse Wastewater, Julio Alberto Martinez

Theses and Dissertations

The influence of Al 3+ on the anaerobic treatment of a poultry slaughterhouse wastewater was studied in this work. The soluble COD (SCOD), volatile acid (VA) concentrations, and methane yield values were measured and compared for zero, 15, and 40 ppm Al 3+ runs. Methane yields of 55.4, 144.2, and 215.4 ml CH4/g. COD for zero, 15, and 40 ppm Al 3+ concentrations, respectively, were observed. Furthermore, SCOD and VAs were not detectable in the reactor that was seeded with 40 ppm Al 3+. It was concluded that inhibitory effects of long chain fatty acids (LCFAs) on aceticlastic methanogens were …

Estimation Of Soil Moisture Using Active Microwave Remote Sensing, Vinod Ramnath Aug 2003

Estimation Of Soil Moisture Using Active Microwave Remote Sensing, Vinod Ramnath

Theses and Dissertations

The method for developing a soil moisture inversion algorithm using Radar data can be approached in two ways: the multiple-incident angle approach and the change detection method. This thesis discusses how these two methods can be used to predict surface soil moisture. In the multiple incident angle approach, surface roughness can be mapped, if multiple incident angle viewing is possible and if the surface roughness is assumed constant during data acquisitions. A backpropagation neural network (NN) is trained with the data set generated by the Integral Equation Method (IEM) model. The training data set includes possible combinations of backscatter obtained …

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Neural Networks For Elemental Concentration From Libs Spectra, Prasanthi Inakollu Aug 2003

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Neural Networks For Elemental Concentration From Libs Spectra, Prasanthi Inakollu

Theses and Dissertations

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an advanced data analysis technique for spectral analysis based on the direct measurement of the spectrum of optical emission from a laser-induced plasma. Assignment of different atomic and ionic lines, which are signatures of a particular element, is the basis of a qualitative identification of the species present in plasma. The relative intensities of these atomic and ionic lines can be used for the quantitative determination of the corresponding elements present in different samples. Calibration curve based on absolute intensity is the statistical method of determining concentrations of elements in different samples. Since we need …

The Evaluation Of Type-M Forager® Sponge Technology To Recycle Soil-Washing Amendments, Rhonda Spiess Fetters Aug 2003

The Evaluation Of Type-M Forager® Sponge Technology To Recycle Soil-Washing Amendments, Rhonda Spiess Fetters

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine if two commonly used soil-washing extracting agents, namely EDTA and nitric acid, could be recycled and reused in subsequent soil-washing processes. This research focuses on the removal of lead from three real-world soils collected from military installations and the evaluation of a chelating polymer termed Type-M Forager® Sponge to recycle the soil-washing effluent. The results of this experiment indicate that the EDTA soil-washing effluent was as effective at removing lead from soil after two recycle processes as it was during the initial simulated soil-washing process. The nitric acid extracting agent solution, however, …

A Global Preconditioning Method For The Euler Equations, B. Gazi Yildirim Aug 2003

A Global Preconditioning Method For The Euler Equations, B. Gazi Yildirim

Theses and Dissertations

This study seeks to validate a recently introduced global preconditioning technique for the Euler equations. Energy and enthalpy equations are nondimensionalized by means of a reference enthalpy, resulting in increased numerical accuracy for low-speed flows. A cellbased, finite volume formulation is used, with Roe flux difference splitting and both explicit and implicit time integration schemes. A Newton-linearized iterative implicit algorithm is implemented, with Symmetric Gauss-Seidel (LU/SGS) nested sub-iterations. This choice allows one to retain time accuracy, and eliminates approximate factorization errors, which become dominant at low speed flows. The linearized flux Jacobians are evaluated by numerical differentiation. Higher-order discretization is …

Effects Of Communication Protocol Stack Offload On Parallel Performance In Clusters, Boris Vladimirovich Protopopov Aug 2003

Effects Of Communication Protocol Stack Offload On Parallel Performance In Clusters, Boris Vladimirovich Protopopov

Theses and Dissertations

The primary research objective of this dissertation is to demonstrate that the effects of communication protocol stack offload (CPSO) on application execution time can be attributed to the following two complementary sources. First, the application-specific computation may be executed concurrently with the asynchronous communication performed by the communication protocol stack offload engine. Second, the protocol stack processing can be accelerated or decelerated by the offload engine. These two types of performance effects can be quantified with the use of the degree of overlapping Do and degree of acceleration Daccs. The composite communication speedup metrics S_comm(Do, Daccs) can be used in …

Combined Ozone And Ultraviolet Inactivation Of Escherichia Coli, Gaurav Savant Aug 2003

Combined Ozone And Ultraviolet Inactivation Of Escherichia Coli, Gaurav Savant

Theses and Dissertations

The kinetics of Escherichia coli inactivation were studied using ultraviolet (UV) radiation, ozone, and UV and ozone (UVO) in combination in a batch reactor at varying pH levels (6, 7, and 8) and at a constant temperature of 25°C. The inactivation kinetics for all three treatment processes was pseudo first order, and the reaction rate constants were considered to be additive such that a combined reaction rate could be obtained by adding the kinetic rates of the processes applied and numerically small rates could be neglected in the computation of the combined rate. Statistical tests (ANOVA and student's t-test) performed …

A Physico-Chemical Characterization Of Salt Cake Dissolution And Study Of Sodium Phosphate Dodechydrate Plug Remediation, Tushar Subhash Durve Aug 2003

A Physico-Chemical Characterization Of Salt Cake Dissolution And Study Of Sodium Phosphate Dodechydrate Plug Remediation, Tushar Subhash Durve

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is divided into two projects. The first project investigates the dissolution of the Hanford salt cakes, the chemical properties of the effluent and the physical properties such as viscosity of the effluent, the porosity and the permeability of the salt cake bed as the dissolution proceeds. The chemical results are compared to predictions using a thermodynamic model. Physical properties are important because they govern the rate at which the Hanford tanks can be emptied thus facilitating the remediation process. Two simulants were investigated for the dissolution process. The chemical analysis matched with the model predictions for both the …

Capacity Of High-Speed Powerline Communication In Vehicles, Deny Hamdani, Ery Safrianti Aug 2003

Capacity Of High-Speed Powerline Communication In Vehicles, Deny Hamdani, Ery Safrianti

Makara Journal of Technology

Powerline Communication (PLC) Systems intents to use the mains network in vehicles for high-speed data transmission. Carrier frequencies in the range of MHz are required to establish data rates of some megabits per second. In this paper, typical reference channels extracted from channel measurements are presented and computation results of their capacities according to Shannon’s theorem are presented. Furthermore, the effect of limitations of frequency range and power spectral density of transmitted signal on achievable capacity is investigated. This paper outlines an assessment for theoretical channel capacity and achievable data rates of vehicular PLC transmission schemes. Finally, EMC (Electromagnetics Compatibility) …

Ultrasound Technique For Prediction Of Statistical Characteristics Of Grid-Generated Turbulence, Tatiana A. Andreeva, William W. Durgin Aug 2003

Ultrasound Technique For Prediction Of Statistical Characteristics Of Grid-Generated Turbulence, Tatiana A. Andreeva, William W. Durgin

Office of the Provost Scholarship

Ultrasonic measurement techniques can be used to determine some characteristics of turbulent flows. In this work measurements of the difference in propagation times of ultrasonic waves along two paths are combined with the Kolmogorov (2/3)-power law to study characteristics of grid-generated turbulence. The paper focuses on ultrasonic measurements of turbulent flow using the travel-time technique. The present research is of interest from two points of view. First, it demonstrates an ultrasonic method of investigation of turbulence, and second, it furthers understanding of the effect of turbulence on sound propagation.

Strike While The Irony Is Hot: Humorous Proverbs, Don Hauptman Aug 2003

Strike While The Irony Is Hot: Humorous Proverbs, Don Hauptman

Word Ways

One of my pet linguistic peeves is the widespread misuse of the adjective proverbial. Consider a recent example, from a magazine profile of a government whistleblower: "When she grabs hold of something, she is like the proverbial dog with a bone in its teeth." Of course, this expression is not a proverb; it's a metaphor or simile. Or, less charitably, a cliche or bromide.

Follow The Leader? Presidential Approval, Presidential Support, And Representatives' Electoral Fortunes, Paul Gronke, Jeffrey Koch, J. Matthew Wilson

Political Science Research

While the link between presidential approval and congressional election outcomes is long established, scholars have generally ignored the role of a member’s own voting record in mediating these effects. If voters truly use the congressional ballot to express support or opposition toward the President, then they should not reward or punish all of his fellow partisans equally. Instead, the degree of reward or punishment meted out by voters ought to depend on the member’s level of support for the president’s legislative initiatives. Using data from the 1993, 1994, and 1996 National Election Studies, we demonstrate two key points: that representatives’ …

Measuring School Effects Across Grades, Njora Hungi Aug 2003

Measuring School Effects Across Grades, Njora Hungi

Shannon Research Press

This study investigates the issue of the value-added components of the education provided across Grade 3 and Grade 5 in primary schools in South Australia and how these components could be measured. The study shows that it is very difficult to identify effective or ineffective schools because the amount of variance left unexplained at the school-level is small. As a solution to this problem, it is more meaningful to identify effective or ineffective schools when the school effects are expressed in terms of years of learning that a student spends at school.
