An Analysis Of Preliminary Test Campaign Results For A Microscale Solar Thermal Engine, Major Fred Kennedy
An Analysis Of Preliminary Test Campaign Results For A Microscale Solar Thermal Engine, Major Fred Kennedy
Small Satellite Conference
In the fall of 2001, the author embarked on an investigation of small (< 100 kg) satellites augmented with high-performance solar thermal propulsion (STP). Small satellites have historically been confined to low earth orbits, with only a very limited capability to alter orbital parameters. A solar thermal propulsion system, properly downsized, could enable microsatellites to perform missions to high earth orbit, as well as lunar, near earth asteroid, and interplanetary intercepts, without the aid of expensive upper stages. Specific impulses of up to 400 seconds (s) are theoretically achievable, with storable monopropellants; velocity changes of up to 3,000 m/s may therefore be attained. This paper will briefly review a selection of benchmark missions and their requirements, and the preliminary and detailed design choices including specific ground rules. However, the focus of the paper is on recent component test results in three key areas: (1) novel ceramic gasketing and metal-to-ceramic bonding methods, a necessity for hermetically sealing the solar thermal cavity receiver; (2) optical performance measurements of a lightweight metal solar concentrating mirror; and (3) thermal performance measurements of the insulated cavity receiver in a series of electrical heating tests in vacuum. A comparison of test data will be made to the results of the author’s optical and thermal models, demonstrating strong agreement between predicted and actual results. These results strongly suggest that solar thermal propulsion can in fact provide substantial orbit transfer capability to small satellites.

Prospects For Affordable Access To Space For Small Payloads, 2003-2012 , Jeff Foust
Prospects For Affordable Access To Space For Small Payloads, 2003-2012 , Jeff Foust
Small Satellite Conference
Affordable access to space has been one of the key issues in the history of space exploration. It is a particularly critical issue for small payloads, where the cost of launch can run many times more than the cost of the payload itself, making many projects financially infeasible. This paper surveys the vehicles in service today as well as those announced or under development in the next decade that can address the small payload market. This analysis includes the estimated launch costs, launch rates, and capacities of the vehicles, as well as the likelihood that vehicles under development will actually …

Global Space League Upcoming Ride-Along Opportunities, Joan Horvath, Charlie Chao, Christopher Kitts, Jeff Patterson, Ron Phillips, Rex Ridenoure, Donna Shirley, Randy Stewart
Small Satellite Conference
Global Space League is a new organization which arranges for students nationwide to take part in real science experiments being performed in places not usually accessible to them: the stratosphere, the ocean, onboard test flights of new flight vehicles, and similar environments. Global Space League has three key customers: scientists exploring interesting environments willing to provide a "ride-along" capability to Global Space League experiments; working scientists who want to come up with a student participatory experiment that can uniquely get some useful data in that environment; and students who want to be involved in some actual missions. This year we …

Synthesis Of Chiral Surfactants For Enantioselective Organic Synthesis., Kalyan Mondal
Synthesis Of Chiral Surfactants For Enantioselective Organic Synthesis., Kalyan Mondal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The first step of the synthesis of the hydrocarbon-based chiral surfactant (2) involved the methylation of (S)-leucinol to give (2S)-N-hexadecyl-N,N-dimethyl-(1-hydroxy-4-methyl-1-pentyl)-2-ammonium bromide (2.92g, 67%). The chiral surfactant was synthesized by reacting (2S)-N,N-dimethyl-2-amino-4-methyl-1-pentanol (1) with bromohexadecane (2.06g, 71%). The functionalized styrene for the polymer supported chiral catalyst (6) was synthesized by reacting (1) with 4-vinylbenzyl chloride. The polymerization was carried out with 10% of the functionalized monomer (5) (1.26g, 70.2%), 5% cross-linking agent divinylbenzene, and 85% of styrene with AIBN as the initiator. The structure of each of the products was confirmed by using FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. The activity of the …

Secure Remote Control And Configuration Of Fpx Platform In Gigabit Ethernet Environment, Haoyu Song
Secure Remote Control And Configuration Of Fpx Platform In Gigabit Ethernet Environment, Haoyu Song
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Because of its flexibility and high performance, reconfigurable logic functions implemented on the Field-programmable Port Extender (FPX ) are well suited for implementing network processing such as packet classification, filtering and intrusion detection functions. This project focuses on two key aspects of the FPX system. One is providing a Gigabit Ethernet interface by designing logic for a FPGA which is located on a line card. Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) packets are handled in hardware and Ethernet frames are processed and transformed into cells suitable for standard FPX application. The other effort is to provide a secure channel to enable remote …

Pardon You? Pardon Me. Controversial Usage Of The Presidential Pardoning Power: From Carter To Clinton., Michael Keith Allen
Pardon You? Pardon Me. Controversial Usage Of The Presidential Pardoning Power: From Carter To Clinton., Michael Keith Allen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study I propose to examine the usage of the pardoning power of the president as it relates to four aspects: the Nixon pardon, political advancement, defense of the person and his party, and independent private gain through the issuance of pardons. These aspects are all a part of the modern day usage of Article II Section 2 of the Constitution.
The study relies primarily on statements made from the presidents involved, as well as statements made by judicial persons involved in the pardoning process. The study is also drawn from direct investigations, both private and governmental. A good …

Technological Protection Measures In The United States, The European Union And Germany - How Much Fair Use Do We Need In The "Digital World"?, Wencke Baesler
ExpressO
This article analyzes the different approaches of the United States and the European Union in the EU Copyright Directive towards the protection of technological protection measures against circumvention. The European and German laws have a radically different approach to fair use that heretofore has not been satisfactorily examined. It is a basic principle of copyright law in the European countries not to provide for a broad fair use exception, but to enumerate specific uses that are excluded from the copyright owner’s right to intervene. However, mostly payment of a reasonable compensation is required. This system is preserved in the recently …
