Robot Heavens And Robot Dreams: Ultimate Reality In A.I. And Other Recent Films, Frances Flannery-Dailey Oct 2003

Robot Heavens And Robot Dreams: Ultimate Reality In A.I. And Other Recent Films, Frances Flannery-Dailey

Journal of Religion & Film

Numerous recent films understand ultimate reality to be multi-layered. This article examines the various formulas films use to express this idea, such as heaven, dreams, technology, temporal loops and altered mental states, while also exploring the various religious and philosophical traditions on which these "ultimate reality films" draw. Next, I suggest a postmodern framework as a way of accounting for the ubiquity of the reality theme across filmic genres and I argue that film is a unique medium for expressing this epistemology. Finally, I turn to an extensive analysis of A.I. as a case study of a postmodern, multivalent "ultimate …

Business Faculty Opinions Of Teaching Methods And Resources, Gundars Kaupins, Malcolm Coco Oct 2003

Business Faculty Opinions Of Teaching Methods And Resources, Gundars Kaupins, Malcolm Coco

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

About two hundred and eighty business professors compared seventeen teaching methods and resources based on four objectives. Interactive, hands-on teaching methods such as internships were rated first and less interactive teaching resources such as radio were rated last. Web courses that included more interaction such as chats were rated higher than Web courses with audio, typed lectures, and videos. However, all four types of Web courses investigated were rated in the bottom half of the teaching methods and resources. Results correspond to major principles of andragogy theory.

Organizational Preparation For Terrorist Attack, Alan Wallace, Vernon Harper Oct 2003

Organizational Preparation For Terrorist Attack, Alan Wallace, Vernon Harper

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

In the event of a terrorist attack causing mass casualties or nuclear, biological, or chemical contamination, emergency responders easily can be overwhelmed by demands for their services. Advance planning by organizations with the advice of emergency responders to safeguard people from becoming victims, to care for victims before emergency responders arrive, and to render assistance to emergency responders once they arrive is critical to mitigating damage.

Children, Sports, And Family Dynamics: Are We Having Fun Yet?, Patrick J. Morrissette, Roberta Graham Oct 2003

Children, Sports, And Family Dynamics: Are We Having Fun Yet?, Patrick J. Morrissette, Roberta Graham

Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice

The involvement of children in sports is rarely an individual endeavor and can positively and /or negatively affect the entire family system to varying degrees. However, little has been written about how children’s participation in sports impact family dynamics. In working toward filling this void, this paper elaborates on several themes that can emerge when children participate in school or community sports. The themes that will be discussed in this paper include: parent/coach/child triangulation, parent coach-parent conflict, performing a dual role, the family all-star, time, financial commitment, and differing parental perspectives. Based on informal observations and discussions with children, parents, …

A Survey-Based Model For Collecting Stakeholder Input At A Land-Grant University, Kathleen Dodge Kelsey, S Christian Mariger Oct 2003

A Survey-Based Model For Collecting Stakeholder Input At A Land-Grant University, Kathleen Dodge Kelsey, S Christian Mariger

Journal of Extension

The 1998 Farm Bill (AREERA) called for greater engagement of land-grant universities with the public by mandating stakeholder input when setting priorities. The study described here developed a model for collecting and implementing input from stakeholders. The researchers collaborated with the Cooperative Extension Service (CES). Data was collected from a randomly selected group of producers. Findings include data regarding producers' needs for services and preferred information sources. The model gives the CES a methodology for gathering input and stakeholders a voice at the program-planning table, increasing the likelihood that they will use research findings to improve practice.

Assessing Extension Internal Organizational Needs Through An Action Research And Learning Process, Michael Havercamp, Elizabeth Christiansen, Deborah Mitchell Oct 2003

Assessing Extension Internal Organizational Needs Through An Action Research And Learning Process, Michael Havercamp, Elizabeth Christiansen, Deborah Mitchell

Journal of Extension

A participatory action research and learning process was used to carry out an internal needs assessment for a statewide Extension organization in a western United States land-grant institution. Focus groups, a written questionnaire, and employee feedback sessions were utilized as a means of identifying strategic organizational issues, needs, and resources that the organization would prioritize based on a 5-year time frame. The research and learning process, discussion of the results, limitations of the study, and implications for similar use of this process are discussed in this article.

Opportunities And Challenges For Land Use Planning In The Intermountain West, Donald Mcleod, Roger Coupal, Andrew Seidl, Katherine Inman Oct 2003

Opportunities And Challenges For Land Use Planning In The Intermountain West, Donald Mcleod, Roger Coupal, Andrew Seidl, Katherine Inman

Journal of Extension

Land use planning is a persistent challenge for rural communities of the Intermountain West. A role for Land-Grant Universities in planning activities is provided through lesson learned in four county projects. Inclusiveness, reciprocal communication, transparency, and objectivity are illustrated as keys to success in applied research and outreach programming.

Success Outcome Markers In Extension (Some): Evaluating The Effects Of Transformational Learning Programs, S Kay Rockwell, Ladeane Jha, Eileen Krumbach

Journal of Extension

Success outcome markers (SOMs), and the process of creating them, offer Extension a new approach to plan, monitor, and evaluate programs. Generating success outcome markers helps to carefully determine all partners (including beneficiaries) who may need to change to accomplish program goals and identifies steps to continuously track incremental successes. Hard-to-measure human behaviors become more concrete when success outcome markers are listed. To successfully use SOMs, one must (a) create a vivid and compelling vision, (b) list your WHOs, (c) write an outcome challenge for each WHO, and (d) determine SOMs. Then decide how to monitor and report on each …

Evaluating Mississippi Non-Industrial Private Forest Landowners Acceptance Of An Interactive Video Short Course, Andrew J. Londo, Deborah A. Gaddis Oct 2003

Evaluating Mississippi Non-Industrial Private Forest Landowners Acceptance Of An Interactive Video Short Course, Andrew J. Londo, Deborah A. Gaddis

Journal of Extension

An interactive forest landowner short course was held in Mississippi in the spring of 2001. Participants evaluated the interactive video versus traditional short course delivery methods. Ninety-five percent of participants said that they would attend another interactive program in the future if given the opportunity. Technical problems were the main reasons cited for not preferring the interactive video format. Results indicate that several subject areas not currently covered in traditional short courses were requested for future interactive programming. Travel costs were significantly reduced. Suggestions for ensuring the success of future interactive programs are given.

Using Regional Economic Analysis Tools To Address Land Use Planning Issues, James R. Nelson, Jerold D. Neufeld, Steven S. Peterson Oct 2003

Using Regional Economic Analysis Tools To Address Land Use Planning Issues, James R. Nelson, Jerold D. Neufeld, Steven S. Peterson

Journal of Extension

This article presents an example of how Extension economists and local Extension educators can use local economic information along with readily available data and tools to provide relevant factual information to help contextualize problems and evaluate alternative outcomes related to land use planning (especially land use planning focused on farmland preservation). The focus of this article is on how such information was developed, delivered, and used to help local policy makers and citizens make better informed decisions in a county with highly productive agriculture and heavy pressure from suburban and rural residential sprawl.

Opposing Excessive Use Of Employer Bargaining Power In Mandatory Arbitration Agreements Through Collective Employee Actions, Michael Z. Green Oct 2003

Opposing Excessive Use Of Employer Bargaining Power In Mandatory Arbitration Agreements Through Collective Employee Actions, Michael Z. Green

Faculty Scholarship

When you review the modern employment relationship and the role of contract, you have to start with the default position of employment-at-will, which allows an employer, in general, to terminate an employee for good reason, bad reason, or no reason at all. A number of exceptions to the employment-at-will rule exist, including tort and statutory employment discrimination claims that allow employees to seek legal remedies and punitive damage awards from juries. As these exceptions have developed outside of contract law, employers have responded by a major contractual effort to shift these disputes away from the courts and into arbitration. The …

College Students And Problematic Drinking: A Review Of The Literature, Lindsay S. Ham, Debra A. Hope Oct 2003

College Students And Problematic Drinking: A Review Of The Literature, Lindsay S. Ham, Debra A. Hope

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Problem drinking during the college years is a significant public health concern. The goal of the current review was to examine the primary psychosocial factors that predict problem drinking in college students. Variables examined included demographic variables, personality, drinking history, alcohol expectancies, drinking motives, stress and coping, activity involvement, and peer and family influence. Evidence from studies of college drinking indicated that the variables associated with college drinking seem to vary at levels dealing with one’s personality and coping mechanisms, one’s thought processes about drinking, and the environment. It seems that expectancies and drinking motives may serve as explanations for …

Grading The Government, Richard Parker Oct 2003

Grading The Government, Richard Parker

Faculty Articles and Papers

For over a decade, scathing critiques of government have been fueled by a group of studies called regulatory scorecards, which purport to show that the costs of many government regulations vastly outweigh their benefits. One widely-cited study by John Morrall, an OMB economist, claims that government regulations cost up to $72 billion per life saved. Another study, co-authored by Bush's regulatory czar, John Graham, claims that over 60,000 people lose their lives each year due to irrational government regulation. A third group of scorecards - compiled by Robert Hahn of the AEI-Brookings Joint Center for Regulatory Studies - claims that …

A Body Of Her Own: Cultural Constructions Of The Female Body In A.S. Byatt's Strange Stories, Sabine Coelsch-Foisner Oct 2003

A Body Of Her Own: Cultural Constructions Of The Female Body In A.S. Byatt's Strange Stories, Sabine Coelsch-Foisner

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Byatt's short fiction, from her first collection Sugar and Other Stories (1987) to Elementals (1998) is marked by a continuous preoccupation with the body: the body as the product of social signifying practices, the body as the site of desires, fears, and anxieties, the body as the source of experience, the body as creator and created. In brief, the body is treated as the centre of existence, consciousness and identity. Yet, these are constantly called into doubt in Byatt's stories, which depict heroines trapped between asserting their identity and submitting to cultural dictates of beauty and behavior. In …
