Holponiyochi: Contemporary Native American Sculpture, Wright State University Art Galleries

Exhibition and Program Catalogs

Nine artists participating in this exhibition share a concern with how practices of visual representation work to construct individual and collective identity. They examine and then reformulate familiar codes of visual culture, turning established conventions of visual representation against themselves. In highly sophisticated and nuanced critical commentary, they explore how both individual and group identities are shaped in and by one's cultural environment. At the same time, they recognize that limiting understanding can be an equally powerful influence in the shaping of one's sense of self and community.

Under A Cloud - Fallout From The Savannah River Site, Norm Buske, The Radioactivist Campaign (Trac)

The RadioActivist Campaign

In April 2003, The RadioActivist Campaign (TRAC) identified a pattern of radioactive cesium-137 outside the northeast boundary of the Savannah River Site (SRS). That cesium-137 is evidence of recent radioactive fallout, from SRS, that contaminates the area downwind of the site. The radioactivity of that cesium-137 was 50 times the normal “background” level.

TRAC believes SRS’s contamination of the area downwind of the site poses a threat to public health and safety and environmental quality. SRS denies that the site contaminates public air and land and states that radioactivity from fallout around SRS is not above background levels.

TRAC also …

Complex Co-Substrate Addition Increases Initial Petroleum Degradation Rates During Land Treatment By Altering Bacterial Community Physiology, Christopher W, Kaplan, Brian G. Clement, Alice Hamrick, Robert W. Pease, Carl Flint, Raul J. Cano, Christopher L. Kits

Biological Sciences

A pilot-scale land treatment unit (LTU) was constructed at the former Guadalupe oil production field with the purpose of investigating the effect of co-substrate addition on the bacterial community and the resulting rate and extent of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) degradation. The TPH was a weathered mid-cut distillate (C10-C32) excavated from the subsurface and stockpiled before treatment. A control cell (Cell 1) in the LTU was amended with nitrogen and phosphorus while the experimental cell (Cell 2) was amended with additional complex co-substrate—corn steep liquor. During the pilot LTU operation, measurements were taken of TPH, nutrients, moisture, aerobic heterotrophic bacteria …

The Anchor, Volume 117.07: October 1, 2003, Hope College

The Anchor: 2003

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Accreditation And Assessment In Distance Learning, Janice M. Karlen Oct 2003

Accreditation And Assessment In Distance Learning, Janice M. Karlen

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

All accredited institutions in the United States that are involved in distance learning initiatives need to be concerned about how their programs and courses will be viewed by accreditation organizations. A review of the policies of several major accreditation associations and professional groups, national, regional and specialized, yields similar results when issues of distance learning are concerned. These requirements are reviewed. Virtually all accreditors require evidence of regular assessment processes. Alternative methods for conducting these assessments are proposed.

Evaluating The Risks Of Market Swaps, Maurice Stucke Oct 2003

Evaluating The Risks Of Market Swaps, Maurice Stucke

Scholarly Works

An asset swap between two competitors can be (i) per se illegal under Section 1 of the Sherman Act or (ii) a potentially legitimate sale of assets under Section 7 of the Clayton Act. The case law and antitrust commentary vary as to which standard should be applied, and the impication can be significant for the business entities contemplating the deal. This article outlines five factors to assist in evaluating the asset swap's legality under the federal antitrust laws, and the critical determination of which standard to apply to a potentially high risk transaction.

Painting, Photography And Fidelity In The Tragic Muse, Adam Sonstegard Oct 2003

Painting, Photography And Fidelity In The Tragic Muse, Adam Sonstegard

English Faculty Publications

Photographs can approach the elegance of paintings, but reproductions can show the distortion of photographs - so The Tragic Muse (1890) suggests, complicating critical understandings of James and visual art. Dramatizing artists' fidelity, James resists assuming that families, races, and genders provide similar options. Fidelity in art can mean 'infidelity' in life, lead to 'adulterated' reproductions, and impugn understandings of inherited and performed identities - concerns which resurface in The American Scene (1907) when James contemplates immigrant populations and in A Small Boy and Others (1913) when a family daguerreotype becomes evidence of his own fidelity.
