A Novel Earplug System For Filtering Out Dental Noise, Jiang-Ren Chang, Huan-Kun Cheng, Sheng-Yang Lee, Mingsian R. Bai, Rong-I Lean
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Undergoing dental treatment is usually a very unpleasant experience for people who have toothaches, especially when they are hurting and there exists some intolerable mechanical noise. To reduce the noise and promote the work efficiency of dentists, a new noisefiltering earplug system with optional music was developed to filter out dental machine noise; if necessary, it can also be adopted as a solution to reduce pain and anxiety of patients during treatments. Furthermore, it can also simultaneously serve as a communication tool between the patient and dentist. In this study, various kinds of noises were initially collected through an off-line …

Development Of A Test For Measuring Knowledge Of The Discipline Provisions Of The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act Amendments Of 1997., Jerri Nave Lyons
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to develop and refine an instrument to assess knowledge levels of the discipline provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1997 (IDEA '97). Such an instrument will assist in determining whether or not and to what extent additional training opportunities may be needed for school personnel who are responsible for disciplining students served in special education under IDEA '97. School officials who do not have proper knowledge and understanding of these provisions may violate students' rights by denying them the free appropriate public education to which they are entitled.

An Analytical Method To Determine The Mechanical Properties Of Linear Viscoelastic Solids, Rani W. Sullivan
An Analytical Method To Determine The Mechanical Properties Of Linear Viscoelastic Solids, Rani W. Sullivan
Theses and Dissertations
A new methodology has been developed to model the viscoelastic behavior of solids using a general spectrum function. Not all materials can be modeled using simple Kelvin-Voigt (K-V) or Maxwell elements where the viscoelastic parameters are constants. There is a need for a general spectrum function that can be used to model the Lame' functions which constitute all properties of interest. Thus far, there is no method like the one presented in this study that can determine the moduli of viscoelastic materials. This study develops a methodology by which the time dependent properties of homogeneous and non-homogeneous materials may be …
Dehydration Of An Ethanol/Water Mixture Using Lignocellulosic Based Adsorbents, Tracy John Benson
Dehydration Of An Ethanol/Water Mixture Using Lignocellulosic Based Adsorbents, Tracy John Benson
Theses and Dissertations
This study evaluated the effectiveness of using cellulosic adsorbents to dehydrate 95 wt% ethanol/5 wt% water mixture. Hardwood sawdust, kenaf core, and bleached wood pulp were used as adsorbents in both liquid phase and gas phase experiments. All three adsorbents preferentially adsorbed water compared to ethanol. Bleached wood pulp exhibited the best performance of adsorbents examined. Data from the liquid ? phase experiments were fitted to the Chakravarti ? Dhar isotherm equation. From the vapor ? phase experiments, the average water loading of hardwood sawdust, kenaf core, and bleached wood pulp was 0.0037, 0.0076, and 0.0121 g H2O/g adsorbent, respectively. …

An Investigation Of The Standardized Multiple-Choice Departmental Calculus I Final Examination, Maria Elizabeth Bearden
Theses and Dissertations
At Mississippi State University, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, a standardized multiple-choice departmental final examination (SMCDF) was administered at the end of the Calculus I mathematics course. This practice was abolished at the end of the spring 1997 semester. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in students¡¯ success in subsequent calculus courses as measured by a student¡¯s grade. If there was a difference, was it consistent along varying levels of students¡¯ ACT mathematics scores. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was run on the data. The variables were the five student ACT Mathematics …

Awareness And Acceptance Of Biotechnology Issues Among Youth, Undergraduates, And Adults, Susan Fritz, Dann E. Husmann, Gary Wingenbach, Tracy Rutherford, Valerie Egger, Preeti Wadhwa
Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications
To be successful both domestically and internationally, biotechnology must establish an acceptable position in the sociopolitical framework. This United States (US) study assessed levels of awareness and acceptance of biotechnology issues among youth (n = 283), undergraduate students (n = 330), and adults (n = 166). The percentage of adults who were aware of how biotechnology would affect food, health, and the environment was almost three times that of youth respondents. It was concluded that consumer groups would most likely be impacted by accurate, unbiased agricultural biotechnology information delivered through the Internet and newspapers that originates from reliable, accessible, and …

Factors Forecasting The Effect Of Rapid Prototyping Technologies On Engineering Design Education., Jeffrey Dale Mather
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents information gathered and analyzed through an electronic internet-based Delphi Survey process. The purpose of this study is to identify a consensus of factors that might forecast the future effects of Rapid Prototyping (RP) technology on engineering design education when used for the purpose of overcoming the limitations of 2D representation of 3D space. The identification of consensus was developed from the collection of opinions from a panel of experts in RP technology.
Early adopters of emerging technologies can reduce risk through careful research, but decisions must often be made before significant quantitative data are available. Expert subjective …

Interworking Methodologies For Dcom And Corba., Edwin Kraus
Interworking Methodologies For Dcom And Corba., Edwin Kraus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The DCOM and CORBA standards provide location-transparent access to network-resident software through language independent object interfaces. Although the two standards address similar problems, they do so in incompatible ways: DCOM clients cannot use CORBA objects, and CORBA clients cannot utilize DCOM objects, due to incompatible object system infrastructures.
This thesis investigates the performance of bridging tools to resolve the incompatibilities between DCOM and CORBA, in ways that allow clients to cross object system boundaries. Two kinds of tools were constructed and studied: tools that bind clients to services at compile time, and tools that support dynamic client-server bindings. Data developed …

Visual Framing: A Study In Face-Ism From The Websites For The 108th United States Congress., Beth Johnson Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Websites are being used by increasing numbers to target a market with a message unfiltered by the media. This content analysis examined the website front-screens for the members of the 108th United States Congress to determine if the photographic images displayed reinforced the media's stereotypical frame of female politicians. A total of 3,892 photographic images were captured from 540 websites and coded using the face-ism index. Overall, the results supported the face-ism theory. Images of females were cropped lower on their bodies than images of males. The face-ism effect was not supported until the number of people in the photograph …
A Sense Of Place., Neli Ilieva Ouzounova
A Sense Of Place., Neli Ilieva Ouzounova
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Concerned with anxiety and displacement, the artist explores a sense of place within the self. Personal experiences are presented as an accumulation of fragmented symbols, textures and pattern. Symbolic imagery is being created, influenced by a devaluation of established norms and a reorganization of cultural identity. The individualÆs interaction and experience with the surrounding world affirms his idiosyncratic symbolism. The artwork is a visual language that through the use of disparate segments sets up the portrayal of the fragmented self and psychological journeys of the artist.
Individuals establish themselves in many ways, including gestures as part of expression. This expression …
Designing Without Boundaries., Mickey Glover
Designing Without Boundaries., Mickey Glover
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis was written as a supporting paper for a graphic design exhibit for a Master of Fine Arts Degree. The focus of my design is the creation of successful pieces of expressive graphic design that defy many traditional or formal rules of design.
This thesis begins with a brief explanation of my methods and what I feel makes for good expressive design. These include a heavy reliance upon intuition, the necessity of traditional design education, historical and contemporary influences. I then characterize my motivations and methods of creating graphic design. Followed by the relation of my work to historical …

Measurement is also performed to determine variation in officers agreement based on the personal characteristics gender, age, education, experience, and rank.
Findings indicate officers show agreement with self-control items across the six dimensions of self control traits, as well as significant variation in agreement with the property offender …
Dying To Get Out Of Debt: Consumer Insolvency Law And Suicide In Japan, Mark West
Dying To Get Out Of Debt: Consumer Insolvency Law And Suicide In Japan, Mark West
Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009
This Article explores the complex relation between consumer insolvency law and suicide in Japan, where bankruptcies and suicides have increased dramatically in recent years. The statistical and interview evidence, some of which relates to the creation of a relatively efficient and socially acceptable insolvency mechanism in 2001, suggests that law is at least indirectly relevant to decisions to take one’s own life. Law can bring about debt control and stigma mitigation, each of which can lead to lower levels of stress and depression, each of which can lead to lower suicide rates. Still, responses to the law, even in relatively …
Employment Market Institutions And Japanese Working Hours, Mark West
Employment Market Institutions And Japanese Working Hours, Mark West
Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009
Why do Japanese workers work such long hours? Beginning with a series of cases in the 1950s, Japanese courts drastically curtailed firms’ abilities to dismiss workers. As a consequence of the inability to dismiss workers legally, large Japanese firms hired a smaller number of workers than were necessary to fulfill capacity without overtime. Employers rely on the working hours of this undersized cadre of workers, carefully screened to rule out the slothful, as a buffer. In bad times, the size of the work force makes dismissal unnecessary. In good times, workers are forced to work long hours. While these court …
A Study Of Company-Initiated Training In Us And Swedish Printing Firms Relative To Prepress, Press, And Finishing Operations, Jonas Hedman
A Study Of Company-Initiated Training In Us And Swedish Printing Firms Relative To Prepress, Press, And Finishing Operations, Jonas Hedman
Theses
Company-initiated training has become an increasingly important activity in printing firms because of the digital revolution in the industry which started in the mid 1980's. Previously, almost every step in prepress, press and finishing was analog, but today the workflow can be 100 percent digital until the information reaches the paper on the press. The computer is the principal part of the workflow, and it is essential for a printing firm to continuously train its workforce in the new technologies in order to develop the company's human resources, and thereby to improve the workflow and even ultimately to ensure the …

Understanding Threats To Scientific Openness, James B. Petro, David A. Relman
Understanding Threats To Scientific Openness, James B. Petro, David A. Relman
United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications
The scientific community is being confronted by public concerns that freely available scientific information may be exploited by terrorists. Differing points of view among scientists threaten to complicate discussion intended to address these concerns. Skepticism of the existence, breadth, and severity of the threat posed by would-be bioweaponeers is compounded by the failure to find clear evidence of biological weapons in Iraq. Also, some even question the extent to which open-source scientific material contributes to the threat.
Recent public discussions regarding the potential for open-source science to enable bioterrorist activities have occurred in a vacuum, without examples of "real-world" activity. …
