Subversion, Demystification, And Hegemony: Fight Club As A Postmodern Cultural Text, Matthew Ortoleva Jan 2003

Subversion, Demystification, And Hegemony: Fight Club As A Postmodern Cultural Text, Matthew Ortoleva

Open Access Master's Theses

This thesis questions whether the film Fight Club, as a postmodern text, reaches a rhetorical goal of critical subversion, and if so, how does it reach this goal? Using a method of postmodern critical theory, this thesis argues that Fight Club does reach a goal of critical subversion by parodically installing and subverting modern hegemonic assumptions and challenging hegemonic cultural practices.

Development Of A Simple Method To Detect And Quantify Benzoylecgonine, A Cocaine Metabolite, In Urine, Kylee E. Billings '03

Honors Projects

Benzoylecgonine (BE) is the most abundant metabolite of cocaine found in the human body. Analysis of BE in urine by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry is the most common method currently used to detect cocaine abuse. This current method is costly and time consuming, so the investigation of an easier and more cost-effective approach is the goal of this research. Because BE is a zwitterion, it is highly soluble in water and very difficult to extract from urine. Once the pKa values of BE are determined, either the cation or anion form of BE can be formed from the zwitterion by adjusting …

Supporting Patriarchy And Consumerism Through Sex Rhetoric: Power, Foucault And Sex And The City, Alyson Chace Arnold Jan 2003

Supporting Patriarchy And Consumerism Through Sex Rhetoric: Power, Foucault And Sex And The City, Alyson Chace Arnold

Open Access Master's Theses

As Americans seek identification through the media, Foucault's "bio-power" extends the power of patriarchy and consumerism through gender prescriptions. A study of modern sexuality discourses can show what those prescriptions are and how the current power-knowledge regimes are maintained by them. This paper focuses on the aspects of Foucault's theories on power that deal with gender and sexuality discourses, explicating the cable show Sex and the City to discuss its role in the perpetuation of the status quo of patriarchy and consumerism through gendered identities. The paper also identifies aspects of the show that reveal a progressive pattern of resistance …

A Qualitative Study Of Relational Aggression In Sixth Grade Girls, Catherine Tinsley Mclallen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Middle school can be a time of great upheaval and unfamiliar footing for a new sixth grader. When students enter middle school, the peer hierarchy and social dynamics of elementary school are often shifted in ways that can be confusing and intimidating. Many new things are expected of a sixth grader that was not expected from a fifth grader. Suddenly there are different teachers for all the classes. There is a choice of classes to take, homework, there is a schedule to memorize. Students are asked to take the initiative and decide what they want to do, rather than having …

Baby Girls From China In New York: A Thrice-Told Tale, Barbara Stark Jan 2003

Baby Girls From China In New York: A Thrice-Told Tale, Barbara Stark

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Every year, almost one million baby girls are “missing” in China. These are the babies predicted to be girls who never appear in national registries. In 2000, more than 5000 baby girls born in China were adopted by U.S. parents and emigrated to the United States. This Article examines the forces that drive adoptions of children from the world's most populous country to its richest from the perspectives of the participants. It analyzes the Chinese, United States, and international laws -- and the violation of these laws -- that make this migration possible.

The story is told from three perspectives: …

Ashcroft V. Aclu: The Fate Of The Child Online Protection Act, Marybeth Eyrich Jan 2003

Ashcroft V. Aclu: The Fate Of The Child Online Protection Act, Marybeth Eyrich

Computer Law Review and Technology Journal

Concerns about the proliferation and accessibility of cyber-porn motivated Congress to pass legislation intended to protect children from on-line pornography. This nascent attempt to regulate the Internet has not yet passed constitutional muster, as Congress's efforts to protect children have been thwarted by First Amendment challenges. Ashcroft v. ACLU examines, but does not resolve, the constitutionality of the Child Online Protection Act ("COPA"). The issue in Ashcroft was whether COPA's use of "community standards" to identify "material that is harmful to minors" violated the First Amendment. In a plurality opinion, the Court held that COPA's use of "community standards" does …

The Potential Effects Of Federal Campaign Finance Reform On Women Candidates For The U.S. House Of Representatives And Senate, Cameo Kaisler '03

Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research

This study investigates the potential effects of campaign finance reform, namely the banning of party or "soft" money on each candidate group (Democrats and Republicans, men and women) for the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. Emphasis is placed on the difference in the effect the reform will have on the sexes. Following analysis of the sources and average totals of campaign financing for all of the groups in the 2000 elections, it can be noted that Republican women stand to be affected by campaign finance reform more than any other group, as they received the largest average amount of …

Increased Brain Histamine H3 Receptor Expression During Hibernation In Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrels, T Sallmen, Af Lozada, Ov Anichtchik, Al Beckman, P Panula

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

BACKGROUND: Hibernation is a state of extremely reduced physiological functions and a deep depression of CNS activity. We have previously shown that the histamine levels increase in the brain during hibernation, as does the ratio between histamine and its first metabolite, suggesting increased histamine turnover during this state. The inhibitory histamine H3 receptor has both auto- and heteroreceptor function, rendering it the most likely histamine receptor to be involved in regulating the activity of histamine as well as other neurotransmitters during hibernation. In view of accumulating evidence that there is a global depression of transcription and translation during hibernation, of …

Analytical Investigations In Magnetic Recording, Stephen J. C. Brown Jan 2003

Analytical Investigations In Magnetic Recording, Stephen J. C. Brown

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The Fourier method is used to provide new analytic solutions for idealized mathematical models of double-element shielded magnetoresistive (MR) recording heads. The general two-dimensional model allows analysis of various recording head configurations; a single pole head, a ring head, a dual stripe head and a differential head. The analysis accommodates both longitudinal recording (with no soft magnetic underlayer present) and perpendicular recording (in the presence of a soft underlayer). Typical field, spectral response function and output voltage pulse plots for double-element MR heads are given and compared to published, approximate solutions. The integrals arising in the determination of the Fourier …

Formal Concept Matching And Reinforcement Learning In Adaptive Information Retrieval, Rohana Kithsiri Rajapakse Jan 2003

Formal Concept Matching And Reinforcement Learning In Adaptive Information Retrieval, Rohana Kithsiri Rajapakse

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The superiority of the human brain in information retrieval (IR) tasks seems to come firstly from its ability to read and understand the concepts, ideas or meanings central to documents, in order to reason out the usefulness of documents to information needs, and secondly from its ability to learn from experience and be adaptive to the environment. In this work we attempt to incorporate these properties into the development of an IR model to improve document retrieval. We investigate the applicability of concept lattices, which are based on the theory of Formal Concept Analysis (FCA), to the representation of documents. …

A Correlation Framework For Continuous User Authentication Using Data Mining, Harjit Singh Jan 2003

A Correlation Framework For Continuous User Authentication Using Data Mining, Harjit Singh

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The increasing security breaches revealed in recent surveys and security threats reported in the media reaffirms the lack of current security measures in IT systems. While most reported work in this area has focussed on enhancing the initial login stage in order to counteract against unauthorised access, there is still a problem detecting when an intruder has compromised the front line controls. This could pose a senous threat since any subsequent indicator of an intrusion in progress could be quite subtle and may remain hidden to the casual observer. Having passed the frontline controls and having the appropriate access privileges, …

A Procedural Model For Integrating Physical And Cyberspaces In Architecture, Peter Anders Jan 2003

A Procedural Model For Integrating Physical And Cyberspaces In Architecture, Peter Anders

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This dissertation articiilates opportunities offered by architectural computation, in particular the digital simulation of space known as virtual reality (VR) and its networked, social variant cyberspace. The thesis will argue that VR/cyberspace has exacerbated differences between architecture's materialist and idealist practices, widening the gap that separates them. In an effort to bridge this gap it presents a procedural model for how VR and cyberspace may be integrated within the practice and product of architecture. The dissertation presents important developments in architectural computation that disclose concepts and values that contrast with orthodox practice. Virtual reality and cyberspace, the foci of this …

Principles Of Metadesign : Processes And Levels Of Co-Creation In The New Design Space, Elisa Giaccardi Jan 2003

Principles Of Metadesign : Processes And Levels Of Co-Creation In The New Design Space, Elisa Giaccardi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

In the tight of the material and cultural conditions of the present world and within the context of current design theories, this research aims to provide an understanding of Metadesign as emerging design cutture, and to integrate and advance its conceptual framework and principles through a tra nsdisci pli nary dialogue with the aesthetics and practice of Net Art. By rejecting the notion of Metadesign as an established design approach and practice, the creation of an etymological hypothesis based on the meanings of the prefix "-meta" (behind, together, between) becomes possible. Following this historical and cultural path, the research describes …

The Implications Of The Curriculum Process On The Design Of A Modern Engineering Programme In The Dublin Institute Of Technology, Kevin Kelly Jan 2003

The Implications Of The Curriculum Process On The Design Of A Modern Engineering Programme In The Dublin Institute Of Technology, Kevin Kelly

Level 3

In the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) the curriculum usually starts with a programme document. The programme document will be a snapshot of faculty thinking at a point in time, usually at the validation stage of the programme. The programme document lays down clearly the aims, objectives, facilities, staff, syllabi, learning/teaching methods, assessment procedures, programme-management arrangements and all of the other characteristics of the programme. It provides a basis for critical scrutiny by all involved. Compilation of the document is an iterative process, and the final document is scrutinised by an expert panel as part of the validation process.
