Complexity Theory And Al Qaeda: Examining Complex Leadership, Russ Marion, Mary Uhl-Bien
Complexity Theory And Al Qaeda: Examining Complex Leadership, Russ Marion, Mary Uhl-Bien
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Recent events in the world are forcing us to restructure our understanding of leadership and organization. The al- Qaeda organization and its pervasive presence in the world demonstrated first-hand the power of a flexible, moderately coupled network of individuals brought together by a common need and aligned behind an informal and emergent leader. Its structure, which resulted from bottom-up coordination of individuals who voluntarily came together based on common need rather than from top-down hierarchical control, clearly demonstrates the power of a networked system based on relationships and shared vision and mission. To understand this and other types of network …
A Literature Review On Learner Control Strategies In Software Tutoring Systems, Xin Li, Leen-Kiat Soh
A Literature Review On Learner Control Strategies In Software Tutoring Systems, Xin Li, Leen-Kiat Soh
School of Computing: Technical Reports
This paper is a comprehensive research review on the learner control strategies in software tutoring systems. With the application of more computer techniques in education and the involvement of more adults in software tutoring systems, the learner control strategy has become more appreciated than tutor control or program control. In this paper, the efficiency and necessity of learner control in software tutoring systems is discussed through the description of learning mechanism. Some typical applications of learner control strategies in software tutoring systems are presented. The available learner control strategies are classified from two perspectives: educational theory, and software mechanism. Finally, …
Estimation Of Hydraulic Conductivity From Borehole Flowmeter Tests Considering Head Losses, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, Brian R. Zurbuchen
Estimation Of Hydraulic Conductivity From Borehole Flowmeter Tests Considering Head Losses, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, Brian R. Zurbuchen
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Recent numerical studies have demonstrated that the conventional interpretation of the borehole flowmeter test (BFT) may lead to considerable errors in estimates of the horizontal hydraulic conductivity (Kr) due to neglect of head loss across the electromagnetic borehole flowmeter (EBF). Even in uniform aquifers, the conventional interpretation underestimates Kr at the base and overestimates Kr at the top of the aquifer. In this paper, we derive exact analytical solutions for hydraulic head and streamlines induced by the BFT in a confined homogeneous aquifer. The solutions explicitly consider head loss across the EBF. The derived analytical solutions …

Use Of Mini-Sprinklers To Strip Trichloroethylene And Tetrachloroethylene From Contaminated Ground Water, Yvette C. Berisford, Parshall B. Bush, John I. Blake, Cassandra L. Bayer
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Three low-volume mini-sprinklers were tested for their efficacy to strip trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) from water. Deionized water spiked with TCE and PCE as pumped for approximately 1 h at 0.19 to 0.21 MPa (28 to 30 lb in-2) through a mini-sprinkler supported on top of a 1.8-m-tall riser. Water was collected in collection vessels at 0.61 and 1.22 m above the ground on support columns that were spaced at 0.61-m intervals from the riser base, and samples were composited per height and distance from the riser. Overall, air-stripping reduced dissolved concentrations of TCE and PCE by …

Sox transcription factors play key regulatory roles throughout development, binding DNA through a consensus (A/T)(A/T)CAA(A/T)G sequence. Although many different Sox proteins bind to this se-quence, it has been observed that gene regulatory elements are commonly responsive to only a small subset of the entire family, implying that regulatory mechanisms exist to permit selective DNA bind-ing and/or transactivation by Sox family members. To identify and explore the mechanisms modu-lating gene activation by Sox proteins further, we compared the function of Sox-2 and Sox-11. This led to the discovery that Sox proteins are regulated differentially at multiple levels, including trans-activation, protein partnerships …

Role Of Activator Protein-1 In The Down-Regulation Of The Human Cyp2j2 Gene In Hypoxia, Nicole Y. Marden, Eva Fiala-Beer, Shi-Hua Xiang, Michael Murray
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
The cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2J2 arachidonic acid epoxygenase gene was down-regulated at a pre-translational level in human hepatoma-derived HepG2 cells incubated in a hypoxic environment; under these conditions, the expression of c-Jun and c-Fos mRNA and protein was increased. The 5′-upstream region of the CYP2J2 gene was isolated by amplification of a 2341 bp fragment and putative regulatory elements that resembled activator protein-1 (AP-1)-like sequences were identified. From transient transfection analysis, c-Jun was found to strongly activate a CYP2J2–luciferase reporter construct, but co-transfection with plasmids encoding c-Fos or c-Fos-related antigens, Fra-1 and -2, abrogated reporter activity. Using a series …

Method To Detect The Presence Of A Microorganism Or Agent In An Animal, David R. Smith, Laura L. Hungerford, Rodney A. Moxley, Susanne Hinkley, Terry Klopfenstein, Jeff Gray
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
The present invention provides a method to detect the presence of a microorganism or agent in an animal. The method encompasses placement of devices at various locations where the animal resides so as to induce the animal to initiate contact with the device. As a result of this contact, the animal deposits various microorganisms and agents on the device. The device is then tested for the presence of the particular microorganism or agent of interest.

Duration Of Infection And Proportion Of Pigs Persistently Infected With Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus, Robert W. Wills, Alan R. Doster, Judith A. Galeota, Jung-Hyang Sur, Fernando A. Osorio
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Understanding the dynamics of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) persistence in individual pigs is essential to the development of successful control programs. The objectives of this study were to investigate the proportion of inoculated pigs that become persistently infected with PRRSV and the duration of their infection. Additionally, different diagnostic techniques that detect persistent infections were compared. Twenty-eight 35-day-old pigs were inoculated with PRRSV. Serum and tonsil biopsy samples were collected on days 0, 7, 14, and 28 and then approximately monthly thereafter until day 251 post-inoculation (p.i.). Tonsil, lymph node, and lung samples were collected following euthanasia …

Roles Of Mycobacterium Smegmatis D-Alanine:D-Alanine Ligase And D-Alanine Racemase In The Mechanisms Of Action Of And Resistance To The Peptidoglycan Inhibitor D-Cycloserine, Zhengyu Feng, Raul G. Barletta
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
D-Cycloserine (DCS) targets the peptidoglycan biosynthetic enzymes D-alanine racemase (Alr) and Dalanine: D-alanine ligase (Ddl). Previously, we demonstrated that the overproduction of Alr in Mycobacterium smegmatis determines a DCS resistance phenotype. In this study, we investigated the roles of both Alr and Ddl in the mechanisms of action of and resistance to DCS in M. smegmatis. We found that the overexpression of either the M. smegmatis or the Mycobacterium tuberculosis ddl gene in M. smegmatis confers resistance to DCS, but at lower levels than the overexpression of the alr gene. Furthermore, a strain overexpressing both the alr and ddl …

Light Storage With Light Of Arbitrary Polarization, Hong Gao, Mark Rosenberry, Herman Batelaan
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
We have demonstrated the phase coherence of stored light in Rb vapor with a completely optical technique. Combining this technique with polarization measurements provides strong evidence that arbitrary polarizations can be stored. The fidelity obtained exceeds 95% for all polarizations. We view the capability to store polarizations as a first step towards building a quantum memory in such a system.
Public Knowledge And Perceptions Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs, Berton Lee Lamb, Kurt Cline
Public Knowledge And Perceptions Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs, Berton Lee Lamb, Kurt Cline
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) historically occupied an 11-state region of the United States. We surveyed 1,900 residents (response rate 56%) of this region to understand citizen knowledge and perceptions about prairie dogs and their management. Those who have direct experience— e.g., those who live very close to prairie dog colonies or know the location of the nearest colony—have higher levels of knowledge. A significantly higher level of knowledge was documented among those who were politically active when compared with the general public. Those who found environmental issues difficult to understand were associated with lower knowledge. People with …
Influence Of Nitrogen And Duration Of Weed Interference On Corn Growth And Development, Sean P. Evans, Stevan Z. Knezevic, John L. Lindquist, Charles A. Shapiro
Influence Of Nitrogen And Duration Of Weed Interference On Corn Growth And Development, Sean P. Evans, Stevan Z. Knezevic, John L. Lindquist, Charles A. Shapiro
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
An improved understanding of the effects of nitrogen (N) on crop–weed interactions is needed for the development of integrated weed management systems where responsible use of N fertilizers is considered. Field experiments conducted in 1999 and 2000 at two locations in eastern Nebraska quantify the effects of N and increasing duration of weed interference on corn growth and development. A naturally occurring population of weeds was allowed to compete with the corn crop for increasing lengths of time and at three rates of N application (0, 60, and 120 kg N ha-1). Weed interference and withholding applied N …
A Phylogenetic Study Of Cytochrome B561 Proteins, Wim Verelst, Han H. Asard
A Phylogenetic Study Of Cytochrome B561 Proteins, Wim Verelst, Han H. Asard
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Background: As an antioxidant and cofactor to numerous metabolic enzymes, ascorbate has an essential role in plants and animals. Cytochromes b561 constitute a class of intrinsic membrane proteins involved in ascorbate regeneration. Despite their importance in ascorbate metabolism, no evolutionary analysis has been presented so far on this newly described protein family. Results: Cytochromes b561 have been identified in a large number of phylogenetically distant species, but are absent in fungi and prokaryotes. Most species contain three or four cytochrome b561 paralogous proteins, and the encoding genes usually have four or five exons. At the protein level, sequence similarities are …

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The bifunctional CO dehydrogenase/acetyl-CoA synthase (CODH/ACS) plays a central role in the Wood–Ljungdahl pathway of autotrophic CO2 fixation. A recent structure of the Moorella thermoacetica enzyme revealed that the ACS active site contains a [4Fe-4S] cluster bridged to a binuclear Cu-Ni site. Here, biochemical and x-ray absorption spectroscopic (XAS) evidence is presented that the copper ion at the M. thermoacetica ACS active site is essential. Depletion of copper correlates with reduction in ACS activity and in intensity of the ‘‘NiFeC’’ EPR signal without affecting either the activity or the EPR spectroscopic properties associated with CODH. In contrast, Zn content …

Single-Cell Protein Profiling Of Wastewater Enterobacterial Communities Predicts Disinfection Efficiency, Gomathinayagam Ponniah, Han Chen, Ronda Michielutti, Nancy Salonen, Paul H. Blum
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
The efficiency of enterobacterial disinfection is dependent largely on enterobacterial community physiology. However, the relationship between enterobacterial community physiology and wastewater processing is unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate this relationship. The influence of wastewater treatment processes on enterobacterial community physiology was examined at the single-cell level by using cultureindependent methods. Intracellular concentrations of two conserved proteins, the growth-related protein Fis and the stationary-phase protein Dps, were analyzed by epifluoresence microscopy of uncultivated cells by using enterobacterial group-specific polyclonal fluorochrome-coupled antibodies. Enterobacterial single-cell community protein profiles were distinct for different types of biological treatment. The differences were …

Large-Scale Cultivation Of Acidophilic Hyperthermophiles For Recovery Of Secreted Proteins, Penny Worthington, Paul H. Blum, Francisco Perez-Pomares, Tom Elthon
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
An electric water heater was modified for large-scale cultivation of aerobic acidophilic hyperthermophiles to enable recovery of secreted proteins. Critical changes included thermostat replacement, redesign of the temperature control circuit, and removal of the cathodic anticorrosion system. These alterations provided accurate temperature and pH control. The bioreactor was used to cultivate selected strains of the archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus and other species within this genus. Reformulation of a basal salts medium facilitated preparation of large culture volumes and eliminated sterilization-induced precipitation of medium components. Substrate induction of synthesis of the S. solfataricus-secreted alpha-amylase during growth in a defined medium …

The finding in animal species of complexes homologous
to the products of six Saccharomyces cerevisiae
genes, origin of replication recognition
complex (ORC), has suggested that ORC-related
mechanisms have been conserved in all eukaryotes.
In plants, however, the only cloned putative homologs
of ORC subunits are the Arabidopsis ORC2 and
the rice ORC1. Homologs of other subunits of plant
origin have not been cloned and characterized. A
striking observation was the absence from the
Arabidopsis genome of an obvious candidate genehomolog
of ORC4. This fact raised compelling
questions of whether plants, in general, and
Arabidopsis, in particular, may have lost the …

Eight Gram-Negative Bacteria Are 10,000 Times More Sensitive To Cationic Detergents Than To Anionic Detergents, Soumitra Rajagopal, Nicole Eis, Kenneth Nickerson
Kenneth Nickerson Papers
In liquid culture, eight typical Gram-negative bacteria were ca. 10,000-fold more sensitive to cationic detergents than to the anionic detergent sodium dodecyl sulfate. Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was inhibitory at concentrations ranging from 0.0006% to 0.01%. Four pseudomonads able to form biofilms were ca. 1000-fold more resistant to CTAB on Luria–Bertani agar plates than they were in liquid culture. A lasI mutant of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was only able to tolerate 0.1% CTAB on Luria–Bertani agar plates but could tolerate 5% CTAB when supplemented with homoserine lactone containing culture supernatants.
En culture liquide, huit bactéries Gram négatif typiques étaient ca. 10,000 fois …

Effects Of Crustal Stresses On Fluid Transport In Fractured Rock: Case Studies From Northeastern And Southwestern Usa, Roger H. Morin, William Z. Savage
Effects Of Crustal Stresses On Fluid Transport In Fractured Rock: Case Studies From Northeastern And Southwestern Usa, Roger H. Morin, William Z. Savage
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The link between stress and hydrologic properties was examined at two sites that are distinguished by different rock types and different stress states. This investigation is based upon the analysis and interpretation of geophysical logs obtained in water wells at the two locations. At the northeast site (Newark Basin), the hydrologic characteristics of sedimentary rocks are dependent upon the relationship to the current regional stress field of two primary types of orthogonal features that serve as preferential pathways for fluid flow. Subhorizontal bedding-plane partings are highly transmissive near the surface and delineate transversely isotropic fluid flow at shallow depths. With …

Taenia Pencei N. Sp. From The Ringtail, Bassariscus Astutus (Carnivora: Procyonidae), In Texas, U.S.A., Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Taenia pencei n. sp. is described from the ringtail, Bassariscus astutus (Carnivora: Procyonidae), in western Texas, U.S.A., and its metacestode is characterized on the basis of specimens from Peromyscus cf. maniculatus in southern Oregon. Taenia pencei n. sp. apparently occurs exclusively in the ringtail, and it is the first cestode of the genus Taenia known from a member of the family Procyonidae. It is morphologically most similar to species of Taenia from mammals of the family Mustelidae in subclade two of the recently constructed phylogeny of that genus. Taenia pencei is distinguished from the nearctic Taenia taxidiensis in the badger …

Insuring Against Terrorism -- And Crime, Saul Levmore, Kyle D. Logue
Insuring Against Terrorism -- And Crime, Saul Levmore, Kyle D. Logue
Articles
The attacks of September 11th produced staggering losses of life and property. They also brought forth substantial private-insurance payouts, as well as federal relief for the City of New York and for the families of individuals who perished on that day. The losses suffered during and after the attacks, and the structure of the relief effort, have raised questions about the availability of insurance against terrorism, the role of government in providing for, subsidizing, or ensuring the presence of such insurance, as well as the interaction between relief and the incentives for taking precautions against similar losses in the future. …

The Genie And The Bottle: Collateral Sources Under The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, Kenneth S. Abraham, Kyle D. Logue
Articles
The September 11th Victim Compensation Fund of 2001 (the Fund) was part of legislation enacted just eleven days after the terrorist attacks of September 11th in the wake of extraordinary national loss. It is possible, therefore, that the Fund will always be considered an urgent and unique response to the unprecedented events of September 11th. On that view, the character of the Fund will have little longterm policy significance. It is equally possible, however, that the enactment of the Fund will prove to be a seminal moment in the history of tort and compensation law. The Fund adopts a new …

Should Patent Protection Be Considered For Computer Software-Related Innovations?, Elosie Gratton
Computer Law Review and Technology Journal
The twentieth century witnessed the development of more significant scientific and technological advances than any other period in history. In today's society computer-related technologies, including software, are at the forefront of change. But at the beginning of the computer age the computer industry overlooked software in favor of more-valuable computer hardware.
The question of software patentability arose during the 1960's and the early 1970's, when the prevailing view of computer suppliers was that software should not be protected by copyright or patent. The industry believed that a system allowing the free exchange and availability of computer programs might stimulate the …

Information Systems Security And Privacy Issues In The Armed Forces, John C. Dolak, Anna E. Dolak
Computer Law Review and Technology Journal
Members of our Armed Forces serve in foreign countries and throughout the United States. Service members and civilian employees working for the military are permitted limited personal use of military computer systems. This limited usage gives, for example, a sailor on a ship a way to communicate with his parents thousands of miles away. It also means that the military must balance the privacy expectations of users against the need to maintain secure computer systems. The military must also ensure that its systems are not used in an illegal fashion or for illegal purposes. Finally, the military must protect its …
