Overcoming "Process-Blindness" In The Design Of An Online Environment: Balancing Cognitive And Psycho-Social Outcomes, Catherine E. Mcloughlin, Joseph Luca Jan 2003

Overcoming "Process-Blindness" In The Design Of An Online Environment: Balancing Cognitive And Psycho-Social Outcomes, Catherine E. Mcloughlin, Joseph Luca

Research outputs pre 2011

Learning environment research can contribute to our understanding of how psychosocial processes need to be balanced with cognitive outcomes in the design of units of study. The research on Web-based learning supports the assumption that the nature of social interaction affects student outcomes and student perceptions of the quality of the learning experience. The purposeful this study is to examine student perceptions of psychosocial processes in a blended learning environment using a learning environment survey tool. Students assessed the environments as favourable, but found that the quality of dialogue and peer support offered did not meet their needs. Implications for …

Using Multimedia To Develop Students' Programming Concepts, Kacha Chansilp, Ron Oliver Jan 2003

Using Multimedia To Develop Students' Programming Concepts, Kacha Chansilp, Ron Oliver

Research outputs pre 2011

The growing use of computers and computer technology is creating a worldwide need for more programmers and computer professionals. The increasing complexity of programming languages and applications is demanding higher skills sets from the programmers who are being trained. Kann et al. (1997) suggest that the graphic representation of algorithms used in most textbooks are too abstract and insufficient for learners to develop the logical thinking required in computer science courses. Many programming students have problems due to a lack of understanding of conceptual and mental models (Soloway et al., 1981). This paper describes the development of an alternative teaching …

"I Just Wanted It Finished!": The Transitions Of A Novice Project Manager, Barnard Clarkson, Joseph Luca Jan 2003

"I Just Wanted It Finished!": The Transitions Of A Novice Project Manager, Barnard Clarkson, Joseph Luca

Research outputs pre 2011

How do you identify quality project managers? Is it possible to rate project managers on a scale, and more importantly once their level has been identified, can their skills be improved? These issues are addressed in this case study by observing the development of a research officer as she unwillingly undertook the management of a series of multimedia projects aimed at training and up-skilling tertiary students. The major conclusion from this research are that her skill development can be identified through the use of a four-stage typology derived from the literature on adult learning.

Using A Student Centred Approach In A Large Class Context, Dawn Darlaston-Jones, Lynne Cohen Jan 2003

Using A Student Centred Approach In A Large Class Context, Dawn Darlaston-Jones, Lynne Cohen

Research outputs pre 2011

Teaching large classes has become a reality for most courses in Australian universities. While many academics recognise the benefits to students and themselves of using alternative teaching methodologies, many resort to the traditional formal lecture approach when it comes to teaching large classes. This paper examines the tension between providing a meaningful learning experience for university students and the constraints of increased class sizes. Presented as a case study, it challenges the assumptions of staff and students in terms of what constitutes an appropriate learning environment and identifies strategies that could usefully be transferred from a small class to a …

Using Multimedia Elements To Change Student Mental Models Of Colour Vision Deficiency, Romana Pospisil, Susan Stoney Jan 2003

Using Multimedia Elements To Change Student Mental Models Of Colour Vision Deficiency, Romana Pospisil, Susan Stoney

Research outputs pre 2011

The online environment offers many opportunities for students to interact with each other, with unit materials and resources, and for lecturers to inform students of issues regarding their main course of study. One of the weaknesses of teaching and learning in the online mode, however, is that lecturers have difficulty in identifying misconceptions and imperfect mental models in their students. This paper reports on a study being conducted by at Edith Cowan University in the use of small e-learning modules developed in Quicktime video to change or strengthen students' mental models - in this case their mental model of Colour …

Patterns Of Engagement In Authentic Online Learning Environments, Janice Herrington, Ron Oliver, Thomas Reeves Jan 2003

Patterns Of Engagement In Authentic Online Learning Environments, Janice Herrington, Ron Oliver, Thomas Reeves

Research outputs pre 2011

The use of authentic activities within online learning environments has been shown to have many benefits for learners in online units and courses. There has been renewed interest in the role of student activities within course units, as constructivist philosophy and advances in technology impact on educational design and practice. Courses based on these principles have been used successfully across a wide variety of discipline areas. In spite of the growing evidence of the success of authentic learning environments, they are not without their problems. In this paper we discuss patterns of engagement that have emerged from our own research …

Evaluating The Use Of The Web By Print Firms, Greg Parry Jan 2003

Evaluating The Use Of The Web By Print Firms, Greg Parry

Research outputs pre 2011

The disruptive impact of electronic commerce on the print industry has the potential to radically transform its value proposition. The challenge for the industry is to utilise the disruptive aspects of emerging technology to offer customers greater variety in the delivery of information and communication, and take advantage of potential cost innovations to improve declining rates of return. This paper reviews these developments and reports on an exploratory study of the Australian print industry that suggests that the extent of transformation has, to date, been limited.

Crosstalk-Resiliant Coding For High Density Digital Recording, Mohammed Zaki Ahmed Jan 2003

Crosstalk-Resiliant Coding For High Density Digital Recording, Mohammed Zaki Ahmed

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Increasing the track density in magnetic systems is very difficult due to inter-track interference (ITI) caused by the magnetic field of adjacent tracks. This work presents a two-track partial response class 4 magnetic channel with linear and symmetrical ITI; and explores modulation codes, signal processing methods and error correction codes in order to mitigate the effects of ITI. Recording codes were investigated, and a new class of two-dimensional run-length limited recording codes is described. The new class of codes controls the type of ITI and has been found to be about 10% more resilient to ITI compared to conventional run-length …

Plasma Interaction With Microbes, M. Laroussi, D. A. Mendis, M. Rosenberg Jan 2003

Plasma Interaction With Microbes, M. Laroussi, D. A. Mendis, M. Rosenberg

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The germicidal effects of a non-equilibrium atmospheric pressure plasma generated by a novel resistive barrier discharge on representatives of the two classes of bacteria (Gram-negative and Gram-positive) are discussed. The plasma exposure, while being lethal to both bacterial classes, also produced gross structural damage in the Gram-negative E. coli while none was observed in the more structurally robust Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis. An electrophysical process involving the role of the electrostatic tension on a charged body in a plasma is invoked to explain both observations. Since the efficacy of this electrophysical process depends not only on the tensile strength of …

A Case Study Of Four School Library Media Specialists' Leadership In Louisiana., Linda Jean Underwood

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to understand the daily activities of effective school library media specialists in an elementary school, middle school, and high school in a Louisiana parish, non-church, public school system through qualitative research using interviews, observation field notes, and written documentation from the three schools. The importance of the study was that there is little known about the leadership role of the school library media specialist and the role of the school library media specialist. Further, the literature concerning effective schools and effective school library media specialists is separate. The study had four conclusions. First, an …

E-Commerce Uses And Gratifications And Framing Study On Media Portrayal And Perspectives Of The Retail E-Commerce Web Site Industry., Margaret R. Millero

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This project examines how media framing, uses and gratifications theory and relationship marketing have all played important roles in the way the public, as well as editors, have viewed e-commerce Web sites and the virtual market place. A framing analysis was applied to major newspaper articles with the purpose of understanding how the media framed e-commerce Web sites and if the uses and gratifications e-commerce users were represented in the stories. Sixty articles were sampled from a variety of U.S. newspapers to understand how the media portray the industry. The results found an overwhelming number of representations of users’ uses …

The Role Of Soft Money, Independent, And Coordinated Expenditures In Elections For The United States House Of Representatives., Kevin R. Spiker Jan 2003

The Role Of Soft Money, Independent, And Coordinated Expenditures In Elections For The United States House Of Representatives., Kevin R. Spiker

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the use and utility of soft money, independent, and coordinated expenditures in elections for the U.S. House of Representatives. While much is known about the effect of hard contributions on political campaigns, very little attention has been given to the role of soft money in congressional elections. Soft money contributions are donated to political parties at the federal level and these funds are ultimately transferred to state political parties to be used for “party building” activities. Given that prior to 2002, there were no limits on the amount of soft money that …

The Relationship Between Computer Skills And The Levels Of Technostress Among Faculty And Academic Librarians From Selected Institutions Within The University System Of Georgia, Sonya Senithia Gaither Shepherd

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

The struggle to adjust to rapid technological change has increased for the majority of the population, especially those in higher education. Change is an inevitable part of society and each individual handles change differently. Furthermore, technology's effect on society, and in particular on higher education, has been positive and negative. There has been resistance to the increased development and use of technology and this resistance may be dependent upon certain factors such as age, sex, and computer experience.

The intent of this study was to determine if computer skills relate to the levels of technostress among faculty in the Colleges …

(2003) Transforming How Teachers Teach And How Students Learn, Laurance J. Splitter Jan 2003

(2003) Transforming How Teachers Teach And How Students Learn, Laurance J. Splitter

Collected Papers of Laurance J. Splitter

For some time, I have been interested in taking the idea of the community of inquiry (COI) beyond the context of philosophy and philosophy for children, to other subject areas and learning areas. We sometimes speak in impressively general terms about transforming "the classroom" into a community of inquiry assuming, perhaps, that once the practice of collective inquiry is established in one domain (eg philosophy), it will inevitably spread to others by the community itself. Another, somewhat more provocative way of stating this claim is to say that not only can subjects other than philosophy be taught as modes or …

Globe Newspaper Co. V. Commonwealth: An Examination Of The Media’S “Right” To Retest Postconviction Dna Evidence, Emily S. Munro

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

In January of 2000, Governor George Ryan of Illinois issued a statewide moratorium on capital punishment, citing among his reasons the fact that more convicted killers had been exonerated than executed since Illinois reinstated the death penalty in 1977. In 2001 Maryland’s governor issued a temporary moratorium on capital punishment, pending the results of a University of Maryland death penalty study. The North Carolina Senate recently approved a bill that would suspend all state executions for two years, after twenty-one North Carolina municipalities passed resolutions favoring a moratorium and two death-row inmates were awarded new trials.

Protecting Children From Pornography On The Internet: Freedom Of Speech Is Pitching And Congress May Strike Out, Dawn S. Conrad

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

The Internet provides the First Amendment’s “freedom of speech” with a world of opportunity. Any person with access to the Internet may take advantage of a wide variety of information and communication methods. This unique medium, known to its users as cyberspace, is located in no particular geographical location and has no centralized control point, but is available to anyone, anywhere in the world with access." In the past twenty years, the Internet, a network of connected computers, has experienced extraordinary growth. The number of “host” computers, or those that store information and relay communications, increased between the years of …
