Student Works (2000-2009)

The subjects in this study included 39 black females and 24 white females in St. Louis County. The ages of participants ranged from 14 to 20 years old. In order to examine the relationship between these two variables the mean, standard deviation, and an independent t-test was performed. There was a strong positive correlation between BIAQ and QOL Importance subscale for Black and White females. A discussion of limitations of this study and implications for future research will be discussed later.

Attitude Of Students Towards Peers With Disabilities: The Effect Of Including Students From An Education Support Centre In An Inclusive Middle School Setting, Steven J. R. Mcgregor
Theses : Honours
This research examines the attitudes of middle school students towards their peers with disabilities. The opportunity for students with disabilities to participate in inclusive education in Western Australia has increased steadily in recent years. The impact of inclusion on stakeholders within the education arena is, therefore, an important area of research. As part of this increased demand for inclusive education a trial inclusion program was set-up at a middle school in regional Western Australian. The target group for this study was all Year 8 (N = 199) students at that school. The attitude of the Year 8 students towards students …

Impact Of High School Preparation On College Oral Communication Apprehension, Karen Kangas Dwyer, Robert E. Carlson, Jennifer Dalbey
Basic Communication Course Annual
This study examines the impact of high school public speaking skills training and public speaking experiences on college overall communication apprehension (CA) and public speaking context CA. The results show that public speaking skill-training in high school is significantly related to lower CA levels or students upon entering a college-level basic speech course. In addition, students who report more public speaking experiences both in high school setting and outside the high school setting, tend to report lower overall CA and lower CA in the public speaking context.

Title Vii Limitations-Keeping The Workplace Hostile, Diane Gentry
Title Vii Limitations-Keeping The Workplace Hostile, Diane Gentry
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article argues that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, as currently interpreted and applied, fails to effectively address workplace sexism and harassment because its legal framework is rooted in patriarchal assumptions. The statute's focus on sexual harassment often overlooks broader gender-based discrimination, leaving many women without adequate legal recourse. The article contends that the law perpetuates male-dominated work cultures by narrowly defining actionable harassment and requiring proof of unwelcome behavior, which places undue burdens on victims.

Cassiopeia, Anthony Paul Farley
Cassiopeia, Anthony Paul Farley
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article argues that sexism functions as an orientation, akin to racism, shaping how individuals navigate societal and legal structures. It posits that the legal system is inherently hierarchical, perpetuating a "man-over-woman" dynamic that is deeply ingrained in juridical space. The author advocates for feminist legal theory as a means to reorient oneself within these structures, emphasizing the need to challenge and transform the systemic hierarchies that perpetuate inequality. The essayists in the symposium exemplify this reorientation by navigating toward alternative constellations of thought, symbolized by Cassiopeia, to create more equitable forms of human association.

How The Overturn Of The Child Pornography Prevention Act Under Ashcroft V. Free Speech Coalition Contributes To The Protection Of Children, Emily D. Goldberg
How The Overturn Of The Child Pornography Prevention Act Under Ashcroft V. Free Speech Coalition Contributes To The Protection Of Children, Emily D. Goldberg
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note examines the Supreme Court's decision in Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition, which struck down portions of the Child Pornography Prevention Act (CPPA) as unconstitutional under the First Amendment. The Court ruled that the CPPA's ban on virtual child pornography was overbroad, as it prohibited lawful speech that could have artistic, literary, or scientific value. The decision highlights the tension between protecting children from exploitation and safeguarding free speech, ultimately emphasizing the importance of allowing narratives that confront and address difficult issues like child sexual abuse.

Effect Of Temperature On Efficiency Of In Situ Bioremediation Technology: A Laboratory Microcosm And Field Study, Javed Iqbal
Effect Of Temperature On Efficiency Of In Situ Bioremediation Technology: A Laboratory Microcosm And Field Study, Javed Iqbal
LSU Master's Theses
Laboratory microcosm experiment and parallel ex situ bioremediation studies were conducted to study the effect of temperature on in situ bioremediation systems installed at Superfund site in southeast Georgia. Laboratory microcosms, inoculated with PAHs/phenols specific microorganisms, at high temperatures (42±2°C; 107±3°F) demonstrated a significant reduction of residual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and selected phenols from 4927±1356ng/g dry weight soil to 1158±530ng/g with a kinetic rate of 76.1±16.8ng/g/day (84% reduction; p≤0.01) in 49days. High temperature non-inoculated microcosms were reduced of residual PAHs and phenols from 1117±436ng/g to 341±116ng/g with a kinetic rate of 15.8±6.5ng/g/day (65% reduction; p≤0.01) in 49days. Rhizome Manipulation Affects Growth And Development Of Ornamental Gingers, Maria Del Pilar Paz
Rhizome Manipulation Affects Growth And Development Of Ornamental Gingers, Maria Del Pilar Paz
LSU Master's Theses
Ornamental gingers are popular cut flowers and have been promoted as a promising potted flower crop because of unique foliage, long-lasting colorful bracts, and few pest problems. Rhizomes are the primary means of propagation in late spring followed by shoot growth and flowering, and plants enter dormancy under short days in the fall. Termination of dormancy is important for greenhouse forcing and extending the growing season. Rhizomes of five ginger species (Curcuma alismatifolia Gagnep., C. cordata L., C. roscoeana Wallich, Globba winittii C.H. Wright, and Kaempferia galanga L.) were either: 1) stored for 0 to 16 weeks at 15, 20 …
