Final Report On Task 12: Southern Great Basin Seismic Network Operations, James N. Brune, David Von Seggern, Ken Smith, Glenn Biasi Oct 2003

Final Report On Task 12: Southern Great Basin Seismic Network Operations, James N. Brune, David Von Seggern, Ken Smith, Glenn Biasi

Publications (YM)

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory began seismic monitoring operations under the DOE-UCCSN Cooperative Agreement on 11/01/1999. This final report summarizes our activities and studies made in the four years up to 09/30/2003. Previously, NSL operated under the M&O for the Yucca Mountain Project from October 1995 through September 1999 and under the U. S. Geological Survey from October 1992 through September 1995. For purposes of this report, earthquakes occurring in the years FY1998 and FY1999 were analyzed in the first two years of the NSL’s involvement with the Cooperative Agreement, and they will be treated here, along with the data in …

A Nested Unsupervised Approach To Identifying Novel Molecular Subtypes, Elizabeth Garrett, Giovanni Parmigiani Oct 2003

A Nested Unsupervised Approach To Identifying Novel Molecular Subtypes, Elizabeth Garrett, Giovanni Parmigiani

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In classification problems arising in genomics research it is common to study populations for which a broad class assignment is known (say, normal versus diseased) and one seeks to find undiscovered subclasses within one or both of the known classes. Formally, this problem can be thought of as an unsupervised analysis nested within a supervised one. Here we take the view that the nested unsupervised analysis can successfully utilize information from the entire data set for constructing and/or selecting useful predictors. Specifically, we propose a mixture model approach to the nested unsupervised problem, where the supervised information is used to …

Ξ‾ And Ω Distributions In Hadron–Nucleus Interactions, R. Vogt, Thomas D. Gutierrez Oct 2003

Ξ‾ And Ω Distributions In Hadron–Nucleus Interactions, R. Vogt, Thomas D. Gutierrez

Physics

Strange baryons have long been known to exhibit a leading particle effect. A recent comparison of Ξ‾ production in π‾, n, and Σ‾ interactions with nuclei show this effect clearly. These data are supplemented by earlier measurements of Ξ‾ and Ω production by a Ξ‾ beam. We calculate the Ξ‾ and Ω xF distributions and nuclear dependence in hA interactions using the intrinsic model.

Measurement Of Anti-Cancer Agent Methoxyamine In Plasma By Tandem Mass Spectrometry With On-Line Sample Extraction, Shuming Yang, Lili Liu, Stanton L. Gerson, Yan Xu Oct 2003

Measurement Of Anti-Cancer Agent Methoxyamine In Plasma By Tandem Mass Spectrometry With On-Line Sample Extraction, Shuming Yang, Lili Liu, Stanton L. Gerson, Yan Xu

Chemistry Faculty Publications

In this work, we present the development and validation of a tandem mass spectrometry method for the quantitative determination of methoxyamine (CH3ONH2), a potential new chemotherapeutic agent, in human and mouse plasma. Methoxyamine together with the internal standard (I.S.) methoxyl-D3-amine was directly derivatized in plasma sample with a novel chemical agent 4-(N,N-diethylamino)benzaldehyde. The product solution was injected into an on-line Oasis® HLB extraction column ( mm) for analyte extraction. After the elution of extractives, the derivatized analytes were monitored by the positive-electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS-MS). The structures of derivatized analytes were elucidated by fragmentation. Quantitation of plasma methoxyamine was carried …

Tight Coupling Between Soil Moisture And The Surface Radiation Budget In Semiarid Environments: Implications For Landatmosphere Interactions, Eric E. Small, Shirley A. Kurc Oct 2003

Tight Coupling Between Soil Moisture And The Surface Radiation Budget In Semiarid Environments: Implications For Landatmosphere Interactions, Eric E. Small, Shirley A. Kurc

Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications

Observations are used to examine how soil moisture influences the surface radiation budget, ground heat flux, and available energy in semiarid environments. Defining this relationship is critical to understand interactions between the land surface and the atmosphere, in particular assessing if a feedback exists between soil moisture and rainfall anomalies. We use two summers of data collected from semiarid grassland and shrubland ecosystems in central New Mexico. The response of surface radiation budget components and other variables to soil moisture variations are quantified via linear regression. Then, the variations are scaled over the observed range of soil moisture (15% volumetric …

Resistive Transitions In Quench-Condensed Bi Films Near A Normal-Metal Ground Plane, Richard P. Barber Jr., Ben Kain Oct 2003

Resistive Transitions In Quench-Condensed Bi Films Near A Normal-Metal Ground Plane, Richard P. Barber Jr., Ben Kain

Physics

We report observations of the zero-field resistive transitions of superconducting quench-condensed Bi0.97Tl0.03 films both near electrically isolated normal-metal ground planes and on clean fire-polished glass. Transition temperatures, obtained by fitting the data with the two-dimensional Aslamazov-Larkin theory of fluctuation conductance, were found to be significantly enhanced for films deposited over ground planes versus those deposited onto insulating substrates. Conductivity enhancement due to superconducting fluctuations was found to be much less than expected for the thinnest samples. This suppression was coincident with broadened superconductor transitions that are consistent with nonuniform sample thickness. Sufficiently thick films showed reasonable agreement with both the …

Task 10: Support To The Regional Model, Irene Farnham

Publications (YM)

The Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies (HRC) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has analyzed approximately 200 groundwater samples for over 60 trace elements and major solutes over the past ten years. These samples represent groundwaters from the Nevada Test Site, Amargosa Valley, the Spring Mountains, Death Valley, Ash Meadows, Pahranagat Valley, and Oasis Valley. The preparation of a data base containing all of these data is near completion and will be submitted to DOE upon its completion. Data verification is in progress. In addition, many multivariate analyses were performed to characterize the trace element compositions in …

Generalized Residual Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation Of Parameters And States, Charles D. Ormsby Oct 2003

Generalized Residual Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation Of Parameters And States, Charles D. Ormsby

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation develops a modification to the standard Multiple Model Adaptive Estimator (MMAE) which allows the use of a new "generalized residual" in the hypothesis conditional probability calculation. The generalized residual is a linear combination of traditional Kalman filter residuals and "post-fit" Kalman filter residuals which are calculated after measurement incorporation. This modified MMAE is termed a Generalized Residual Multiple Model Adaptive Estimator (GRMMAE). The dissertation provides a derivation of the hypothesis conditional probability formula which the GRMMAE uses to calculate probabilities that each elemental filter in the GRMMAE contains the correct parameter value. Through appropriate choice of a single …
