Computer Assisted Eye Fungal Infection Diagnosis, Madhusudhanan Balasubramanian
Computer Assisted Eye Fungal Infection Diagnosis, Madhusudhanan Balasubramanian
LSU Master's Theses
In this thesis, an attempt has been made to assist the diagnosis of Fungal Keratitis, a fungal infection that occurs in the corneal layers of the eye, by identifying the region of infection in the corneal images using fractal-based features. Three features related to the fractal dimension of the surface of the image, when represented in a 3D using the pixel intensity measure, are used to identify these regions in the image. To reduce the computation complexity, Fisher linear discriminant (FLD) is used to reduce the 3D raw feature to 1D feature, while preserving feature values. Using the adaptive mixtures …
Factors Affecting Participation In City Recycling Programs, Stacy Marie Lockhart
Factors Affecting Participation In City Recycling Programs, Stacy Marie Lockhart
LSU Master's Theses
Recycling consists of diverting or recovering materials from the solid waste stream that would otherwise end up returning to the environment as a potential source of pollution. These collected materials are then used as raw materials in the manufacture or assembly of a new product or package. Over the years the amount of municipal solid waste being generated per person has steadily increased. Waste disposal costs are also increasing, making recycling even more important. To address this issue cities are developing recycling policies or plans. The type of plan varies according to the area; as of this time there are …
Solving Chemical Problems Of Environmental Importance Using Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy, Dean B. Atkinson
Solving Chemical Problems Of Environmental Importance Using Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy, Dean B. Atkinson
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Cavity ring-down (CRD) is a sensitive variant of traditional absorption spectroscopy that has found increasing use in a number of chemical measurement applications. This review focuses on applications of cavity ring-down spectroscopy that will be of interest to environmental chemists and analytical chemists working on environmental problems. The applications are classified into direct monitoring approaches, indirect analysis methods and ancillary studies and a differentiation is made between field-tested instruments and proof of principle studies.
The Extinction Properties Of Reddened Galactic Ob Sightlines, Lynne Angela Valencic
The Extinction Properties Of Reddened Galactic Ob Sightlines, Lynne Angela Valencic
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A solid understanding of dust grains and their extinction properties is needed to better remove the effects of extinction from data and to comprehend the nature of the processes which modify grains. This requires a large sample of Galactic sightlines, extending far beyond the solar neighborhood, sampling not only a large volume of space but also a wide variety of environments. To fulfill this requirement, a database of sightlines toward 426 young, reddened stars was constructed using extinction curves based on IUE spectra. The curves were fit and the Fitzpatrick-Massa (FM) parameters were found. FM parameters allow for a quantitative …
Language, Identity And The Achievement Gap: Comparing Experiences Of African-American Students In A French Immersion And A Regular Education Context, Michelle Georgette Haj-Broussard
Language, Identity And The Achievement Gap: Comparing Experiences Of African-American Students In A French Immersion And A Regular Education Context, Michelle Georgette Haj-Broussard
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Black/White Achievement gap has been a persistent problem in education. Previous research attributed this gap to students' culture (Jenks & Phillips, 1998; Ogbu, 1995a.b) or teachers' expectancy (Rist, 1970). Post-colonial literature suggests that this research itself is oppressive, and that learning is negotiating the "spaces" between students and teachers (Ellsworth, 1997); creating a hybrid "mestiza" space (Anzaldúa, 1987). The openness of immersion to diversity, and its subsequent educational benefits for African-American students (Caldas & Boudreaux, 1999) conforms to this post-colonial perspective. This mixed-methodology study examined both academic achievement and the experiences of Louisiana fourth grade students/teachers in both the …
Perceptions Of Stereotypes In Hispanic Children's Literature, Nancy Gomez
Perceptions Of Stereotypes In Hispanic Children's Literature, Nancy Gomez
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study attempted to determine the accurateness of the representation of the Hispanic culture in children’s books. I interviewed ten people: five non-Hispanic and five Hispanic, and I found that the Hispanic people do not seem to pay as much attention to physical features as non-Hispanic people do. However, they were concerned about the portrayal of the Hispanic culture in traditional ways: the traditional roles of women, the traditional dress, the architecture of the houses and the portrayal of the Hispanic people living in rural areas and being extremely poor. It appears that from the timeline covered by the books, …
Control Of Transport Dynamics In Overlay Networks, Qishi Wu
Control Of Transport Dynamics In Overlay Networks, Qishi Wu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Transport control is an important factor in the performance of Internet protocols, particularly in the next generation network applications involving computational steering, interactive visualization, instrument control, and transfer of large data sets. The widely deployed Transport Control Protocol is inadequate for these tasks due to its performance drawbacks. The purpose of this dissertation is to conduct a rigorous analytical study on the design and performance of transport protocols, and systematically develop a new class of protocols to overcome the limitations of current methods. Various sources of randomness exist in network performance measurements due to the stochastic nature of network traffic. …

Low Salinity Waters In Deep Sedimentary Basins, David Scott Szalkowski
Low Salinity Waters In Deep Sedimentary Basins, David Scott Szalkowski
LSU Master's Theses
While the composition and origin of brines in deep sedimentary basins has been extensively discussed, the composition and origin of low salinity waters is not as well documented. Since the 1960s, the presence of deep, low-salinity waters has been observed in some sedimentary basins and is commonly present in overpressured sections. The episodic release of low salinity, overpressured fluids upward into sediments containing high salinity formation waters likely occurs at <100-year intervals. Because there is a growing body of evidence that suggests mixing formation waters of varying salinity could induce the dissolution and precipitation of minerals, it is important to have detailed information about chemical compositions of both end-member fluids to adequately predict such mixing results. This study concludes that low salinity waters (<35 g/l) are generally not unique in major solute composition when compared to high salinity waters (>35 g/l). On log-log plots, monovalent cations plot along 1:1 slopes with respect to salinity and total anionic charge, while divalent cations plot along 2:1 slopes. However, this study concludes …100-year>
Solute Transport In A Porous Medium: A Mass-Conserving Solution For The Convection-Dispersion Equation In A Finite Domain, William Golz
Solute Transport In A Porous Medium: A Mass-Conserving Solution For The Convection-Dispersion Equation In A Finite Domain, William Golz
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation considers the proper mathematical description for the physical problem of a miscible solute undergoing longitudinal convective-dispersive transport with constant production, first-order decay, and equilibrium sorption in a porous medium. Initial and input concentrations may be any continuously differentiable functions and the mathematical system is articulated for a finite domain. This domain yields a mass balance which requires Robin (i.e., third-type) boundaries, which describe a continuous flux but a discontinuous resident-concentration. The discontinuity in the resident concentration at the outflow boundary yields an underdetermined system when the exit concentration is not experimentally measured. This is resolved by defining the …
Fractal Compression And Analysis On Remotely Sensed Imagery, Ke Xiao
Fractal Compression And Analysis On Remotely Sensed Imagery, Ke Xiao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Remote sensing images contain huge amount of geographical information and reflect the complexity of geographical features and spatial structures. As the means of observing and describing geographical phenomena, the rapid development of remote sensing has provided an enormous amount of geographical information. The massive information is very useful in a variety of applications but the sheer bulk of this information has increased beyond what can be analyzed and used efficiently and effectively. This uneven increase in the technologies of gathering and analyzing information has created difficulties in its storage, transfer, and processing. Fractal geometry provides a means of describing and …
Sensory Characteristics Of Flavored Milk Candies, Noemi Raquel Pavon
Sensory Characteristics Of Flavored Milk Candies, Noemi Raquel Pavon
LSU Master's Theses
A natural milk candy, composed mainly of milk powder, has not been commercially sold in the U. S. market. The milk candy we developed contains calcium and other essential nutrients, which make it a potential food supplement for adults and children. This thesis research was designed to characterize sensory properties of flavored milk candies and to determine the consumer sensory profile driving product acceptance and purchase intent. A descriptive trained panel (n=12) developed a lexicon and evaluated 3 milk candies (plain, chocolate, and coffee) in triplicate using a 15-cm line scale. 335 adult consumers evaluated acceptability of appearance, size/shape, texture, …
Evaluation Of Repeated Removal Of Mammalian Predators On Waterfowl Nest Success And Density, Kristen Dawn Chodachek
Evaluation Of Repeated Removal Of Mammalian Predators On Waterfowl Nest Success And Density, Kristen Dawn Chodachek
LSU Master's Theses
Low levels of nest success in the prairie pothole region are mainly attributed to changes in predator community and abundance. Removal of predators from large sites (≥ 4144 ha) has been an effective strategy for increasing nest success; however, trapping small sites (< 301 ha) is considered ineffective. I examined the effects of removing predators from 10, 259 ha sites in northeastern North Dakota during 2001-2002. Overall nest success for both years was greater on trapped sites (53.4%) than non-trapped sites (28.7%). Furthermore, daily survival rate was greater on removal sites, and was positively correlated with total predators removed. Differences in nest density were apparent between treatments with an increased nest density on trapped sites, however year had no effect. Pair densities did not differ between treatments, but a 2-fold increase for both trapped and non-trapped sites was found in spring 2002. Cost to produce one fledged duckling, combining all species ranged from $16-20. Overall, the results of this study indicate that repeated removal of predators on small sites is an effective strategy for increasing waterfowl production; however, feasibility will ultimately depend on the user group, budget limitations, landowner objectives, and public acceptance.

Abundance Trends And Environmental Habitat Usage Patterns Of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) In Lower Barataria And Caminada Bays, Louisiana, Cara Edina Miller
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The paucity of research into the environmental requirements, stock membership, abundance and residency patterns of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in coastal Louisiana creates difficulty in understanding how local ecosystems and threats (such as fishery interactions, habitat degradation and pollution) affect populations. This study combined fine-scale environmental measurements and photo-identification techniques to describe patterns of habitat usage and abundance of bottlenose dolphins in lower Barataria Basin from June 1999 to May 2002. In addition I investigated the validity and limitations of using mark-recapture models to estimate abundance from cetacean photo-identification data. Bottlenose dolphins were present year-round in a wide range of …

Gauss' Method Of Least Squares: An Historically-Based Introduction, Belinda B. Brand
Gauss' Method Of Least Squares: An Historically-Based Introduction, Belinda B. Brand
LSU Master's Theses
This work presents Gauss' justification of the method of least squares, following the treatment given by Gauss himself in "Theoria Combinationis Observationum Erroribus Minimis Obnoxiae," where the main idea is to show that the least squares estimate is the unbiased linear estimate of minimum variance. (Actually, we present Gauss' argument both in his terminology and translated into matrix terminology.) We show how this contrasts with Gauss' earlier justfication in "Theoria Motus Corporum Coelestium" which was based on the assumption of a normal distribution of errors, and yielded the estimate of maximum likelihood. We present as a background the development from …

The Impact Of Louisiana's School And District Accountability System On Students' Performance On The State Mandated Criterion Referenced Test, Linda B. Tolbert
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study is aimed at determining the impact of Louisiana’s School and District Accountability System on students’ performance on the state mandated criterion-referenced test (LEAP 21). The study was designed to determine the extent to which teachers in Title I schools in a large urban district in southwest Louisiana have turned to instructionally unsound practices in response to a high-stakes accountability system. The specific objectives addressed in this study were to: 1) Explore if test scores have changed beyond what would be expected given the cohort design of the accountability model. 2) Explore if test scores have changed and determine …
Design And Synthesis Of Handles For Solid-Phase Peptide Synthesis And Convergent Peptide Synthesis, Jose Giraldes
Design And Synthesis Of Handles For Solid-Phase Peptide Synthesis And Convergent Peptide Synthesis, Jose Giraldes
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The recent popularity of methods for solid-phase peptide synthesis that use the 9-fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl (Fmoc) group for Nα-amino protection has created a need for compatible anchoring linkages and handles. In an effort to develop mild new methods for use in solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), a new ferrocene containing linker or “handle”, the 1’1-ferrocenyl carboxaldehyde handle was designed, synthesized, characterized and tested. This linker is analogous to those commercially available and developed by Barany. The ferrocenyl amine linker(FAL) releases C-terminal peptide amides upon acidolysis. Since the FAL handle is acid labile it is compatible with Fmoc and Nα-dithiasuccinoyl …
Atomic And Electronic Structure Of Bulk Intermetallic And Heteroepitaxially Grown Surface Alloys, Orhan Kizilkaya
Atomic And Electronic Structure Of Bulk Intermetallic And Heteroepitaxially Grown Surface Alloys, Orhan Kizilkaya
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
It has been well documented that the surfaces of solids may differ from their bulk counterpart. The symmetry that a bulk possesses is broken at the surface. Due to this broken symmetry in the reduced dimension of the surface, the energetic of the surface also differs from the bulk counterpart. Reconstruction, charge redistribution, and surface alloying are phenomena that minimize the surface free energy. Surface properties of scientifically and technologically important bimetallic systems are the main focus of this dissertation. Specifically, surfaces of bulk alloy or heteroepitaxially grown metal-on-metal systems have been investigated primarily with two indispensable surface techniques, scanning …

Manufacturing And Analysis Of A Liga Heat Exchanger For The Surface Of A Tube: A Cooling Simulation Of The Leading Edge Region Of A Turbine Blade, Christophe Marques
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Fabricating nickel micro heat exchangers directly on planar or non-planar metal surfaces has been demonstrated using the LIGA micromachining process. These heat exchangers can effectively control the temperature of surfaces in high heat flux applications. Of particular interest is the temperature control of gas turbine engine components. The locations in the gas turbine engine where improved, efficient cooling is required includes gas turbine blades, stator vanes, the turbine disk, and the combustor liner. In this dissertation, the primary application of interest is the use of such heat exchangers to cool airfoils such as turbine blades. In the first part of …
The Price Of Macroeconomic Imprecision: How Should The Law Measure Inflation?, Jim Chen
The Price Of Macroeconomic Imprecision: How Should The Law Measure Inflation?, Jim Chen
UC Law Journal
Because no economy is forever free from price change, a legal system that seeks to maintain its vitality across the full range of macroeconomic conditions must adopt a proper measure of inflation. In areas such as taxation, economic regulation, and private contracting, the law's response to inflation constitutes a policymaking opportunity in its own right. In campaign finance and judicial compensation, the legal treatment of inflation may have constitutional consequences.
In spite of inflation's profound ramifications for the law, federal law has taken a seemingly haphzard approach toward its measurement. Federal statutes specifying one price index strongly favor the Bureau …
A Hybrid Model-Based And Memory-Based Short-Term Traffic Prediction System, Ciprian Danut Alecsandru
A Hybrid Model-Based And Memory-Based Short-Term Traffic Prediction System, Ciprian Danut Alecsandru
LSU Master's Theses
Short-term traffic forecasting capabilities on freeways and major arterials have received special attention in the past decade due primarily to their vital role in supporting various travelers' trip decisions and traffic management functions. This research presents a hybrid model-based and memory-based methodology to improve freeway traffic prediction performance. The proposed methodology integrates both approaches to strengthen predictions under both recurrent and non-recurrent conditions. The model-based approach relies on a combination of static and dynamic neural network architectures to achieve optimal prediction performance under various input and traffic condition settings. Concurrently, the memory-based component is derived from the data archival system …
Hydrodynamic And Sediment Transport Modeling Of Deltaic Sediment Processes, Hassan Shahid Mashriqui
Hydrodynamic And Sediment Transport Modeling Of Deltaic Sediment Processes, Hassan Shahid Mashriqui
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation tests the hypothesis that the early phases of deltaic bar and distributary channel formation and sediment transport on an adverse slope could be simulated with a 2D finite element sediment transport model. The models used were RMA2 and SED2D modules of the TABS-MD model suite. A finite element mesh of the lower Atchafalaya River and the delta was developed, using the Surface Water Modeling System (SMS) software package. Calibration and validation of the model were performed, using data collected during field surveys and from available Atchafalaya River archived flow, suspended sediment, and dredging records. In a test simulation …

An Ecopath/Ecosim Analysis Of An Estuarine Food Web: Seasonal Energy Flow And Response To River-Flow Related Perturbations, Laura Lynette Althauser
LSU Master's Theses
Estuaries are often the receiving basins for major river systems which makes them vulnerable to anthropogenic influences. I used Ecopath and Ecosim to investigate the structure of the Weeks Bay, Alabama, USA food web, and the responses of the food web to bottom-up perturbations. Four season-specific steady-state Ecopath models were developed and used to compare the production, biomass, consumption, biomass flows, and higher order indices of ecosystem functioning of the Weeks Bay food web under winter, spring, summer, and fall conditions. The season-specific Ecopath snapshots indicated that the structure of the Weeks Bay food web was resilient. Winter had the …
Taking Cover: Fifth Amendment Takings Jurisprudence As A Tool For Resolving Water Disputes In The American West, Jeffrey A. Wilcox
Taking Cover: Fifth Amendment Takings Jurisprudence As A Tool For Resolving Water Disputes In The American West, Jeffrey A. Wilcox
UC Law Journal
The Supreme Court's Fifth Amendment takings jurisprudence over the last half-century, through its notorious inconsistency, has provided relatively unreliable precedent for those seeking clearly to delineate the parameters of appropriate government intrusion upon private property rights. Although the Court has outlined a few categories where a per se taking has occurred, these categories cover but a small portion of takings challenges, thus leaving a broad swath of ambiguity for parties that might otherwise implement these decisions to vindicate their rights.
At present, litigants on both sides of a water dispute in the arid American West seek refuge in these scattered …
Wood Laminated Composite Poles, Cheng Piao
Wood Laminated Composite Poles, Cheng Piao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Wood composite poles are new engineered products with polygonal shapes and bonded with synthetic resins. The poles have multiple advantages over the solid wood poles and are a promising solid pole substitute in power transmission, telecommunication, and cable TV services. The use of composite poles may reduce the cost both in materials and manipulation, and facilitate installation and treatment. It is necessary to evaluate the factors that affect their properties and construct theoretical and analytical models to analyze these properties. Experiments were conducted to investigate strip thickness and number of strips’ (NOS) effects on the flexural properties and shear stress …
Regional Water Quality Models For The Prediction Of Eutrophication Endpoints, Anindita Das
Regional Water Quality Models For The Prediction Of Eutrophication Endpoints, Anindita Das
LSU Master's Theses
Eutrophication is a process by which a waterbody progresses from its origin to its extinction. During this period, there is a gradual accumulation of nutrients and organic biomass, accompanied by a decrease in average depth of the water due to sediment accumulation, and an increase in primary productivity, usually in the form of dense algal blooms. Cultural eutrophication occurs when humans, through their various activities, greatly accelerate this process. Eutrophication can cause loss in species diversity, fish kills, and decrease the aesthetic value of a waterbody. The EPA is trying to prevent cultural eutrophication by setting standards for water quality …
