Putting The Best Possible Teacher In The Classroom : Through Reflection And Self-Evaluation, Renee Fisher Jan 2003

Putting The Best Possible Teacher In The Classroom : Through Reflection And Self-Evaluation, Renee Fisher

Graduate Research Papers

Over the span of five months, an elementary school teacher uses reflection and self-evaluation methods to review her teaching. The process encourages improvement in areas concurrent with the Iowa Teaching Standards. Including a current portfolio, the teacher uses the medium of videotape to self-evaluate her teaching style and the evaluation by building administrator. Current research in teacher evaluation lends support to the need for self-evaluation. The completed portfolio becomes a working document chronicling the teacher's work in the classroom and career field. The results show the improvement that has occurred, along with areas to advance in.

An Administrative Vision For Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Chad A. Szabo Jan 2003

An Administrative Vision For Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Chad A. Szabo

Graduate Research Papers

As I study leadership and reflect on the possibility of becoming a school administrator, I am convinced that my personal priorities and values will be challenged and must be clear. An administrative position encompasses a wide variety of responsibilities, skills, and wisdom. Most importantly the role also requires effective judgments and decisions to be made that are financially and legally sound. I continue to be introduced to many new perceptions and views of administrative leadership. Theories of leadership qualities and actions abound. I realize the importance of studying and understanding many different leadership ideas and approaches. It is important to …

Address Register Assignment For Reducing Code Size, M. Kandemir, M. J. Irwin, G. Chen, J. Ramanujam Jan 2003

Address Register Assignment For Reducing Code Size, M. Kandemir, M. J. Irwin, G. Chen, J. Ramanujam

Faculty Publications

In DSP processors, minimizing the amount of address calculations is critical for reducing code size and improving performance since studies of programs have shown that instructions that manipulate address registers constitute a significant portion of the overall instruction count (up to 55%). This work presents a compiler-based optimization strategy to reduce the code size in embedded systems. Our strategy maximizes the use of indirect addressing modes with post-increment and post-decrement capabilities available in DSP processors. These modes can be exploited by ensuring that successive references to variables access consecutive memory locations. To achieve this spatial locality, our approach uses both …

The Perception Of Harmony In Combinations Of Blinking Visual Stimuli., Katharine Tepe, Donald J. Polzella, Greg C. Elvers Jan 2003

The Perception Of Harmony In Combinations Of Blinking Visual Stimuli., Katharine Tepe, Donald J. Polzella, Greg C. Elvers

Psychology Faculty Publications

Research on the perception of musical harmony indicates that combinations of tones tend to be judged consonant when their respective frequencies are reducible to simple ratios. This phenomenon was studied in the visual mode by using combinations of two blinking lights as stimuli. Eight, two-light combinations were created whose frequency ratios corresponded to those of eight common musical intervals, e.g., octave, fifth. In a pair comparison task, participants judged which one of two, two-light combinations appeared more harmonious or blended. The judgments were compared to those obtained from studies of musical harmony by regressing the scaled auditory preferences onto the …

Near-Surface Currents In Desoto Canyon (1997–99): Comparison Of Current Meters, Satellite Observation, And Model Simulation, Dong-Ping Wang, Lie-Yauw Oey, Tal Ezer, Peter Hamilton Jan 2003

Near-Surface Currents In Desoto Canyon (1997–99): Comparison Of Current Meters, Satellite Observation, And Model Simulation, Dong-Ping Wang, Lie-Yauw Oey, Tal Ezer, Peter Hamilton

CCPO Publications

This study evaluates a data-assimilated model simulation of near-surface circulation in DeSoto Canyon (DSC), Gulf of Mexico, with emphasis on analyzing moored current-meter observations and comparing them with satellite data and model results. The study period is for two years from April 1997 to April 1999. The model results are from a high-resolution Gulf of Mexico model forced by analyzed wind and surface heat flux. Two types of data are used to deduce near-surface circulation: moored current meters at 13 locations in the DSC, and satellite sea level anomaly. The moored currents are mapped through multivariate objective analysis to produce …

The Temporally Filtered Navier-Stokes Equations: Propertes Of The Residual Stress, C. D. Pruett, T. B. Gatski, Chester E. Grosch, W. D. Thacker Jan 2003

The Temporally Filtered Navier-Stokes Equations: Propertes Of The Residual Stress, C. D. Pruett, T. B. Gatski, Chester E. Grosch, W. D. Thacker

CCPO Publications

Recent interest in the development of a unifying framework among direct numerical simulations, large-eddy simulations, and statistically averaged formulations of the Navier-Stokes equations, provides the motivation for the present paper. Toward that goal, the properties of the residual (subgrid-scale) stress of the temporally filtered Navier-Stokes equations are carefully examined. This includes the frame-invariance properties of the filtered equations and the resulting residual stress. Causal time-domain filters, parametrized by a temporal filter width 0infinity, the residual stress is equivalent to the long-time averaged stress, and the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are recovered from the temporally filtered equations. The predicted behavior at the …

Bio-Optical Properties Of The Labrador Sea, Glenn F. Cota, W. Glen Harrison, Trevor Platt, Shubha Sathyendranath, Venetia Stuart Jan 2003

Bio-Optical Properties Of The Labrador Sea, Glenn F. Cota, W. Glen Harrison, Trevor Platt, Shubha Sathyendranath, Venetia Stuart

CCPO Publications

Three cruises were conducted during fall and spring in the Labrador Sea to investigate the effects of bio-optical properties on satellite retrievals of phytoplankton chlorophyll in this important high-latitude ecosystem. Taxon-specific and regional differences were found. Diatoms had similar to 1.5 lower chlorophyll-specific absorption but significantly higher reflectance ratios than prymnesiophytes. Particulate absorption at 443 nm for total, phytoplankton, and "detrital'' fractions was related to chlorophyll, but values were lower than reported for lower latitudes. Decreased particulate absorption is attributed primarily to pigment packaging, while low backscattering to scattering ratios result from a lower relative abundance of bacteria and picophytoplankton …

The Structure Of Residuated Lattices, Kevin K. Blount, Constantine Tsinakis Jan 2003

The Structure Of Residuated Lattices, Kevin K. Blount, Constantine Tsinakis

Mathematics Faculty Publications

A residuated lattice is an ordered algebraic structure [formula] such that is a lattice, is a monoid, and \ and / are binary operations for which the equivalences [formula] hold for all a,b,c ∈ L. It is helpful to think of the last two operations as left and right division and thus the equivalences can be seen as "dividing" on the right by b and "dividing" on the left by a. The class of all residuated lattices is denoted by ℛℒ The study of such objects originated in the context of the theory of ring ideals in the 1930s. The …

Applying Traditional And Proportional Aspects Of Form To Atonal Music, Daniel J. Arthurs Jan 2003

Applying Traditional And Proportional Aspects Of Form To Atonal Music, Daniel J. Arthurs

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

Theory teachers can encounter several problems when presenting atonal (and more specifically, twelve-tone) techniques to their students for the first time. Among these problems is the need to find creative ways to motivate student interest in styles which may be unfamiliar, or with which they may be less than favorably disposed. Many students close their ears to the music of Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern when first exposed to it. It takes a considerable amount of time to understand the complexity, wit, and aesthetic thought of the composer who uses twelve-tone technique. This discussion will present two possible ways to encourage student …

Contention In The Classroom - Encouraging Debate And Alternate Readings In The Undergraduate Theory Class, Matthew Bribitzer-Stull Jan 2003

Contention In The Classroom - Encouraging Debate And Alternate Readings In The Undergraduate Theory Class, Matthew Bribitzer-Stull

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

All too often, core courses in undergraduate music theory are a one-sided affair; the instructor presents the requisite battery of voice-leading rules, chord progressions, and formal paradigms while the students dutifully work to master this material. But classroom opportunities for meaningful discourse between students are often rare. Of course, high-level musical discourse is ideally what music theory is all about. If we, as instructors, promote this idea to our students during the first years of study, it will help them realize that achieving the ability to engage in such discourse is exactly what the core curriculum is designed to help …

My Father Didn't Think This Way': Nigerian Boys Contemplate Gender Equality, Françoise Girard Jan 2003

My Father Didn't Think This Way': Nigerian Boys Contemplate Gender Equality, Françoise Girard

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

One of the lessons emerging from adolescent programs around the world is the need to create settings where young men can question things that are often seen as unquestionable, such as what it means to be a man. This issue explores the Conscientizing Male Adolescents (CMA) program in Nigeria which, unlike many programs targeting adolescent boys that emphasize short-term activities aimed at preventing disease and unwanted pregnancy, is a long-term program focusing on sexism and critical-thinking skills. An initial evaluation indicates that such programs affirm that we do know how to engage young men, and that historically reinforced gender attitudes …

School Vouchers: Will They Undermine American Public Schools? Establishing A Context For Debate, Michael F. Dipaolo Jan 2003

School Vouchers: Will They Undermine American Public Schools? Establishing A Context For Debate, Michael F. Dipaolo

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

Available data from 1995 and 1996 shows that school districts with the largest concentrations of children living in poverty spent considerably less per student than districts with smaller concentrations. In 1995 and 1996, public school districts serving metropolitan areas spent more per student for instruction, support services, and capital outlay combined than did other districts. The recent rise of real personal income per capita has paralleled the increase in public revenue for education per elementary or secondary student. During the 1990s, however, revenue as a percentage of personal income, adjusted for the number of students and population size, decreased slightly, …

Sozomen, Barbarians, And Early Byzantine Historiography, Walter Stevenson Jan 2003

Sozomen, Barbarians, And Early Byzantine Historiography, Walter Stevenson

Classical Studies Faculty Publications

Sozomen, writing in mid-fifth century Constantinople, stands out as an exception proving the rule in Byzantine historiography. He is the first and last Christian Byzantine historian to make a serious effort at ethnography.5 When we consider how quickly Christianity was spreading outside the boundaries of the eastern Empire in the fourth and fifth centuries it is striking how little mention barbarians and their evangelization earn in the early ecclesiastical histories.6 To illustrate this point I will begin by showing that Sozomen’s predecessors, Eusebius, Rufinus, and Socrates, de-emphasized the natural interest that the historical genre had expressed in ethnography, …

Stock Price Modeling And Insider Trading Theory, Jessica J. Guillory Jan 2003

Stock Price Modeling And Insider Trading Theory, Jessica J. Guillory

LSU Master's Theses

The mathematical study of stock price modeling using Brownian motion and stochastic calculus is a relatively new field. The randomness of financial markets, geometric brownian motions, martingale theory, Ito's lemma, enlarged filtrations, and Girsanov's theorem provided the motivation for a simple characterization of the concepts of stock price modeling. This work presents the theory of stochastic calculus and its use in the financial market. The problems on which we focus are the models of an investor's portfolio of stocks with and without the possibility of insider trading, opportunities for fair pricing of an option, enlarged filtrations, consumptions, and admissibility. This …

Heat Transfer In Outdoor Aquaculture Ponds, Jonathan Lamoureux Jan 2003

Heat Transfer In Outdoor Aquaculture Ponds, Jonathan Lamoureux

LSU Master's Theses

An energy balance was developed for heated and unheated earthen aquaculture ponds to 1) determine the relative importance of energy transfer mechanism affecting pond temperature; 2) predict pond temperatures; 3) estimate the energy required to control pond temperatures, and 4) recommend efficient heating and cooling methods. PHATR (Pond Heating and Temperature Regulation), a computer program using 4th order Runge-Kutta numerical method was developed to solve the energy balance using weather, flow rate and pond temperature data. By comparing measured and modeled pond temperatures, the average difference (the average bias) was 0.5°C for unheated ponds and 2.4°C for heated ponds. The …

Compositional Systematics Of Deep, Low Salinity Formation Waters In The Upper Wilcox Of Southeastern Texas, Kathleen (Kt) Moran Jan 2003

Compositional Systematics Of Deep, Low Salinity Formation Waters In The Upper Wilcox Of Southeastern Texas, Kathleen (Kt) Moran

LSU Master's Theses

Overpressured Eocene Wilcox sandstones in the Newton County, Texas Sabine Tram field contain water with salinities ranging from 14 to 28 g/L. The solutes appear to fall loosely into three groups. Na, Ca, and Mg follow systematics previously known globally for saline formation waters whereby their concentrations are controlled by fluid-mineral equilibrium. Cl, Br, I, and B are conservatively diluted constituents of some saline endmember that is not solely connate marine. Potassium does not follow any known basinal systematic, and the formation water is supersaturated with respect to SiO2 by an order of magnitude. Meteoric water is not a probable …

Freeway Accident Analysis Using Second Order Statistics, Khasim Khasimul Shaik Jan 2003

Freeway Accident Analysis Using Second Order Statistics, Khasim Khasimul Shaik

LSU Master's Theses

This research focuses on the use of historical freeway traffic data for comparison of the precursory traffic conditions to that accident occurrence by using 15-minute traffic speed contour maps. The second order statistics measures, namely angular second moment (ASM), contrast and entropy were used as the traffic performance measures in order to compare the two situations. The data used is from I-4 freeway traffic condition database, stored in a SQL server and 1999 year accident database for the same I-4 freeway. The study section is located in Orlando, Florida. The approach shows an approach to understand the performance of the …

The Effects Of Sediment Grain Size And Oil Exploration On Microbial Atp Biomass, Eric Tyson Guilbeau Jan 2003

The Effects Of Sediment Grain Size And Oil Exploration On Microbial Atp Biomass, Eric Tyson Guilbeau

LSU Master's Theses

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a unique biochemical indicator of active microbial biomass and its relationship to environmental conditions. Its assay in sediments is complicated, however, by adsorptive loss to the sediment matrix and subsequent interferences in the luciferin-luciferase assay by compounds released during the extraction process. Corrections must be applied to correct for these losses and we describe a novel approach using radioactive ATP to correct for ATP adsorption. The sediment matrix also plays a significant role in determining both the magnitude of the ATP pool and the extent of the ATP adsorptive loss. Coarser sediments were found to have …

Comparative Analysis Of State Environmental Enforcement In Region Six Of The United States, Rebecca Marcus Jan 2003

Comparative Analysis Of State Environmental Enforcement In Region Six Of The United States, Rebecca Marcus

LSU Master's Theses

Through intense studies of agency audits, EPA policies and documents, state environmental compliance data and state agency issued documents, I have evaluated the enforcement programs of Region Six state environmental agencies. The four elements utilized to perform this evaluation were listed in EPA compliance assurance program documents. The analysis was conducted by comparing state program performance in each element. Element 1 is the “appropriate identification of violations.” Element 2 is the “timely issuance of enforcement actions.” Element 3 is the “escalation of enforcement actions when violations continue.” Element 4 is the “ability to assess and collect penalties.” These elements are …

Sugarcane Seed Response To 2,4-D And Alternative Herbicides For Red Morningglory (Ipomoea Coccinea L.) Control, Jonathan Daniel Siebert Jan 2003

Sugarcane Seed Response To 2,4-D And Alternative Herbicides For Red Morningglory (Ipomoea Coccinea L.) Control, Jonathan Daniel Siebert

LSU Master's Theses

Field studies conducted over two growing seasons evaluated the effect of 2,4-D applied at 1.6 kg ai/ha to LCP 85-384 sugarcane (Saccharum interspecific hybrid) 7, 5, 3, and 1 wk before planting (WBP). Sugarcane was planted in mid-September using both whole stalk and billet (45 cm) seed pieces. When 2,4-D was applied 5 wk or closer to planting, sugarcane shoot emergence and population averaged across planting methods was reduced 5, 7, and 28 wk after planting (WAP) when compared to the nontreated control. Sugarcane height in one of two years was reduced when 2,4-D was applied 5 wk or closer …

Diet Similarity Of Pen-Raised Versus Native, Louisiana White-Tailed Deer In Southeastern Louisiana, Kristopher Scott Davis Jan 2003

Diet Similarity Of Pen-Raised Versus Native, Louisiana White-Tailed Deer In Southeastern Louisiana, Kristopher Scott Davis

LSU Master's Theses

Previous studies have shown that pen-raised deer may be already predisposed to malnutrition at a higher rate then their native counterparts because they are normally raised on a pelleted ration and may not forage efficiently once released into wild habitats. Therefore, twenty pen-raised white-tailed deer that were offspring of deer obtained from Missouri (Odocoileus virginianus) were released onto a marsh pump-off habitat in southeast Louisiana (Da Bunch) to compare their diets to the diets of the native, wild, white-tail deer population already established in the area over four consecutive seasons to test this hypothesis. The microhistological analysis technique was used …
