Magnetic Properties Of Epitaxial Mn-Doped Zno Thin Films, Xuemei Cheng, C. L. Chien
Magnetic Properties Of Epitaxial Mn-Doped Zno Thin Films, Xuemei Cheng, C. L. Chien
Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship
Epitaxial ZnO thin film doped with 7% Mn have been made by reactive rf magnetron sputtering onto (1120) sapphire substrates at 400 °C. X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that the Zn0.93Mn0.07O film has a (0001) wurtzite single-crystal structure with a rocking curve width od 0.98°. UV-VIS absorption spectra show a band gap of 3.25 eV for pure ZnO films and 3.31 eV for the Zn0.93Mn0.07O film with states extending into the gap. The Auger electron spectroscopy shows homogeneous distribution of Mn in the film. The magnetic properties of the Zn0.93Mn0.07 …
Teachers' Perceptions Of Societal Factors In Teacher Education During The 1980s, Suzanne Michele Katz
Teachers' Perceptions Of Societal Factors In Teacher Education During The 1980s, Suzanne Michele Katz
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Over the past 150 years teacher education has continually been accepted as a necessity for those charged with instructing the young, especially when paired with the common school movement. If all school-aged children were to be in classrooms it followed that teachers trained in educating students needed to be available. As school populations exploded from the mid 1800s to the early 1900s, most communities called for teachers in increasing numbers. Such is an example of the link between societal factors and the education of teachers. The political, historic, and societal foundations on which the practice of teacher education is grounded …

Adaptive Baseband Predistortion For Rf Power Amplifier Linearization., Laura Faus-Ferrer
Theses
In order to make use of spectrally efficient linear modulation methods for mobile communications, it is necessary to linearise the underlying RF power amplifier (PA). A number of techniques for linearizing a PA have been studied, focusing on the Adaptive Baseband Predistortion. The work is centred on the research concentrates on the analysis of different algorithms, their simulation using MatLab, and implementation of a predistorter as a subsystem of a prototype Cartesian based transmitter.
The thesis describes the typical architecture of a transceiver with an emphasis on the nonlinear analysis. Cavers’ algorithm has been examined in terms of its computational …

The use of victim impact evidence (VIE) has been a standard feature of capital trials since 1991, when the Supreme Court lifted the previously existing constitutional bar to such evidence. Legal scholars have almost universally condemned the use of VIE, criticizing it on a variety of grounds.
Yet little empirical analysis exists that examines how VIE influences the course and outcome of capital trials. Moreover, the handful of empirical analyses that do exist rely on data gathered in simulation studies. Although valuable contributions have emerged from these experimental studies, such studies have often-rehearsed …

We analyze the influence of VIE based on interviews with over two-hundred jurors who sat on capital trials in South Carolina between 1985 and 2001.
First, we describe the VIE introduced at sentencing trials, using a …

In recent years, the criminal justice community has become increasingly concerned about the possibility that jury nullification is the underlying motivation for increasing numbers of acquittals and mistrials due to jury deadlock in felony jury trials. In this Article, the authors discuss the inherent difficulty in defining jury nullification and identifying its occurrence in actual trials. They review the evolution in public and legal opinion about the legitimacy of jury nullification and contemporary judicial responses to perceived instances of jury nullification. Finally, the authors examine the possible presence of jury nullification through empirical analysis of data collected from 372 felony …

Peer Dialogue: The How And What Of Appropriate Validation Under Daubert: Reconsidering The Treatment Of Einstein And Freud, Edward J. Imwinkelried
Missouri Law Review
In its landmark decision in Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc., the Supreme Court announced that the trial judge must play a gatekeeping or screening role in deciding whether proffered expert testimony constitutes sufficiently reliable “scientific . . . knowledge” to qualify for admission under Federal Rule of Evidence 702. The Court declared that the proponent of the testimony must lay a foundation establishing “appropriate validation” for the expert’s underlying theory or technique. In order to intelligently assess the adequacy of a validation foundation, the trial judge must address two questions: what must be validated, and how should it be …

Trouble With Daubert-Kumho: Reconsidering The Supreme Court's Philosophy Of Science, The, David Crump
Missouri Law Review
This Article begins with a brief exploration of the philosophy of science that is laid out in the Daubert, Joiner, and Kumho cases. It then proceeds to examine the question, “what is science”? A related section considers the disadvantages and ironic results of the Daubert-Kumho definition of science. Next, the Article considers the characteristics of a good scientific theory or model. It compares the resulting criteria to those set out in Daubert and its progeny and shows how the Supreme Court’s philosophy can produce dubious consequences. A final section sets out the conclusions, which include the possibility that the Supreme …

Habitat Connectivity In Reef Fish Communities And Marine Reserve Design In Old Providence-Santa Catalina, Colombia, R.S. Appeldoorn, A. Friedlander, J. Sladek Nowlis, P. Usseglio, A. Mitchell-Chui
Gulf and Caribbean Research
On the insular platform of Old Providence/Santa Catalina, Colombia, we compared nearshore lagoonal patch reefs to those on the northern bank distant from the islands to determine the importance of habitat connectivity to fish community structure. Nearshore patch reefs had greater proximity to mangrove, seagrass and rocky shore habitats, and they had significantly more individuals. Nearshore reefs also tended to have a greater total biomass, more species, a higher proportion of predators of mobile invertebrates and small fishes, and a lower proportion of herbivores. Biomass of snappers and grunts at nearshore sites was four times greater compared to bank sites, …

Discovery Of Functional And Approximate Functional Dependencies In Relational Databases, Ronald S. King, James J. Legendre
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study develops the foundation for a simple, yet efficient method for uncovering functional and approximate functional dependencies in relational databases. The technique is based upon the mathematical theory of partitions defined over a relation's row identifiers. Using a levelwise algorithm the minimal non-trivial functional dependencies can be found using computations conducted on integers. Therefore, the required operations on partitions are both simple and fast. Additionally, the row identifiers provide the added advantage of nominally identifying the exceptions to approximate functional dependencies, which can be used effectively in practical data mining applications.

The Impact Of Tech Prep On Community College Readiness In Michigan, Patrick J. Nedry
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Tech Prep programming was introduced in Michigan in 1987 to improve the academic skills of high school students when they enter a Michigan community college. Over $44,000,000 had been spent on Tech Prep programming in Michigan since 1991, and there had been little evaluation of the effort in its impact on academic achievement. This study was designed to determine if Tech Prep programming had been effective in reducing remediation rates in Michigan community colleges. The research was an ex post facto study that examined the relationships and predictability of Tech Prep programming on high school and college readiness in Michigan …

Improving Aboriginal Numeracy: A Book For Education Systems, School Administrators, Teachers And Teacher Educators, Thelma Perso
Research outputs pre 2011
Aboriginal students have the right to access the same education that is available to non-Aboriginal children in Australian schools. At present, Aboriginal children have access to, the same curriculum that non-Aboriginal students have access to but it may not empower them. This might be for a variety of reasons: their different starting points, learning styles, underlying issues which are impediments to learning, and in particular, their previous experiences may not be understood by their classroom teachers.

Multi-Variable Polynomial Solutions To Pell's Equation And Fundamental Units In Real Quadratic Fields, James Mclaughlin
Multi-Variable Polynomial Solutions To Pell's Equation And Fundamental Units In Real Quadratic Fields, James Mclaughlin
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Solving Pell’s equation is of relevance in finding fundamental units in real quadratic fields and for this reason polynomial solutions are of interest in that they can supply the fundamental units in infinite families of such fields. In this paper an algorithm is described which allows one to construct, for each positive integer n, a finite collection, {Fi}, of multi-variable polynomials (with integral coefficients), each satisfying a multi-variable polynomial Pell’s equation C 2 i − FiH 2 i = (−1)n−1 , where Ci and Hi are multi-variable polynomials with integral coefficients. Each positive integer whose square-root has a regular continued …

On The Divergence In The General Sense Of Q-Continued Fractions On The Unit Circle, Douglas Bowman, James Mclaughlin
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We show, for each q-continued fraction G(q) in a certain class of continued fractions, that there is an uncountable set of points on the unit circle at which G(q) diverges in the general sense. This class includes the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction and the three Ramanujan-Selberg continued fraction. We discuss the implications of our theorems for the general convergence of other q-continued fractions, for example the G¨ollnitz-Gordon continued fraction, on the unit circle.

Polynomial Solutions To Pell's Equation And Fundamental Units In Real Quadratic Fields, James Mclaughlin
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Finding polynomial solutions to Pell’s equation is of interest as such solutions sometimes allow the fundamental units to be determined in an infinite class of real quadratic fields. In this paper, for each triple of positive integers (c, h, f) satisfying c 2 − f h2 = 1, where (c, h) are the smallest pair of integers satisfying this equation, several sets of polynomials (c(t), h(t), f(t)) which satisfy c(t) 2 − f(t) h(t) 2 = 1 and (c(0), h(0), f(0)) = (c, h, f) are derived. Moreover, it is shown that the pair (c(t), h(t)) constitute the fundamental polynomial …
