Alginate Is Not A Significant Component Of The Extracellular Polysaccharide Matrix Of Pa14 And Pao1 Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilms, Daniel J. Wozniak, Timna J. O. Wyckoff, Melissa Starkey, Rebecca Keyser, Parastoo Azadi, George A. O'Toole, Matthew R. Parsek Jun 2003

Alginate Is Not A Significant Component Of The Extracellular Polysaccharide Matrix Of Pa14 And Pao1 Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilms, Daniel J. Wozniak, Timna J. O. Wyckoff, Melissa Starkey, Rebecca Keyser, Parastoo Azadi, George A. O'Toole, Matthew R. Parsek

Dartmouth Scholarship

The bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa causes chronic respiratory infections in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. Such infections are extremely difficult to control because the bacteria exhibit a biofilm-mode of growth, rendering P. aeruginosa resistant to antibiotics and phagocytic cells. During the course of infection, P. aeruginosa usually undergoes a phenotypic switch to a mucoid colony, which is characterized by the overproduction of the exopolysaccharide alginate. Alginate overproduction has been implicated in protecting P. aeruginosa from the harsh environment present in the CF lung, as well as facilitating its persistence as a biofilm by providing an extracellular matrix that promotes adherence. Because of …

Identification Of Macro- And Micro-Compliant Mechanism Configurations Resulting In Bistable Behavior, Brian D. Jensen Jun 2003

Identification Of Macro- And Micro-Compliant Mechanism Configurations Resulting In Bistable Behavior, Brian D. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to identify the configurations of several mechanism classes which result in bistable behavior. Bistable mechanisms have use in many applications, such as switches, clasps, closures, hinges, and so on. A powerful method for the design of such mechanisms would allow the realization of working designs much more easily than has been possible in the past. A method for the design of bistable mechanisms is especially needed for micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) because fabrication and material constraints often prevent the use of simple, well-known bistable mechanism configurations. In addition, this knowledge allows designers to take advantage …

A Self-Retracting Fully-Compliant Bistable Micromechanism, Nathan D. Masters Jun 2003

A Self-Retracting Fully-Compliant Bistable Micromechanism, Nathan D. Masters

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to present a class of Self-Retracting Fully-compliant Bistable Micromechanisms (SRFBM). Fully-compliant mechanisms are needed to overcome the inherent limitations of microfabricated pin joints, especially in bistable mechanisms. The elimination of the clearances associated with pin joints will allow more efficient bistable mechanisms with smaller travel. Small travel, in a linear path facilitates integration with efficient on-chip actuators. Tensural pivots are developed and used to deal with the compressive loading to which the mechanism is subject. SRFBM are modeled using the Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model and finite element analysis. Suitable configurations of the SRFBM concept have been …

The Shapes Of Dirichlet Defects, Mark Bowick, Antonio De Felice, Mark Trodden Jun 2003

The Shapes Of Dirichlet Defects, Mark Bowick, Antonio De Felice, Mark Trodden

Physics - All Scholarship

If the vacuum manifold of a field theory has the appropriate topological structure, the theory admits topological structures analogous to the D-branes of string theory, in which defects of one dimension terminate on other defects of higher dimension. The shapes of such defects are analyzed numerically, with special attention paid to the intersection regions. Walls (co-dimension 1 branes) terminating on other walls, global strings (co-dimension 2 branes) and local strings (including gauge fields) terminating on walls are all considered. Connections to supersymmetric field theories, string theory and condensed matter systems are pointed out.

Actuator Fault Compensation For A Helicopter Model, Xiao-Hua Yu Jun 2003

Actuator Fault Compensation For A Helicopter Model, Xiao-Hua Yu

Electrical Engineering

A fault-tolerant system is the one that can continue its operation without significant impact on performance in the presence of hardware and/or software errors. In this paper, the design of a fault-tolerant flight controller to control UH-60 helicopter is investigated. A 9th-order state space representation of the helicopter model operating at the forward mode with 80 knots is presented; then a fault-tolerant optimal feedback controller is designed and tested.

Multi-Chart Geometry Images, P. V. Sander, Z. J. Wood, S. J. Gortler, H. Hoppe Jun 2003

Multi-Chart Geometry Images, P. V. Sander, Z. J. Wood, S. J. Gortler, H. Hoppe

Computer Science and Software Engineering

We introduce multi-chart geometry images, a new representation for arbitrary surfaces. It is created by resampling a surface onto a regular 2D grid. Whereas the original scheme of Gu et al. maps the entire surface onto a single square, we use an atlas construction to map the surface piecewise onto charts of arbitrary shape. We demonstrate that this added flexibility reduces parametrization distortion and thus provides greater geometric fidelity, particularly for shapes with long extremities, high genus, or disconnected components. Traditional atlas constructions suffer from discontinuous reconstruction across chart boundaries, which in our context create unacceptable surface cracks. Our solution …

Iteration Methods For Approximating The Lowest Order Energy Eigenstate Of A Given Symmetry For One- And Two-Dimensional Systems, Chad Everett Junkermeier Jun 2003

Iteration Methods For Approximating The Lowest Order Energy Eigenstate Of A Given Symmetry For One- And Two-Dimensional Systems, Chad Everett Junkermeier

Theses and Dissertations

Using the idea that a quantum mechanical system drops to its ground state as its temperature goes to absolute zero several operators are devised to enable the approximation of the lowest order energy eigenstate of a given symmetry; as well as an approximation to the energy eigenvalue of the same order.

On The Indemonstrability Of The Principle Of Contradiction, Elisabeta Sarca Jun 2003

On The Indemonstrability Of The Principle Of Contradiction, Elisabeta Sarca

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I examine three models of justification for the epistemic authority of the principle of contradiction. Aristotle has deemed the principle "that the same attribute cannot at the same time belong and not belong to the same subject and in the same respect" the most certain and most prior of all principles, both in the order of nature and in the order of knowledge, and as such it is indemonstrable. The principle of contradiction is involved in any act of rational discourse, and to deny it would be to reduce ourselves to a vegetative state, being incapable of …

Methyl And T-Butyl Group Reorientation In Planar Aromatic Solids: Low-Frequency Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Relaxometry And X-Ray Diffraction, Peter A. Beckmann, Carylon Buser, Kathleen Gullifer, Frank B. Mallory, Clelia W. Mallory, Gene M. Rossi, Arnold L. Rheingold

Chemistry Faculty Research and Scholarship

We have synthesized 3-t-butylchrysene and measured the Larmor frequency omega/2pi (= 8.50, 22.5, and 53.0 MHz) and temperature T (110-310 K) dependence of the proton spin-lattice relaxation rate R in the polycrystalline solid [low-frequency solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry]. We have also determined the molecular and crystal structure in a single crystal of 3-t-butylchrysene using x-ray diffraction, which indicates the presence of a unique t-butyl group environment. The spin-1/2 protons relax as a result of the spin-spin dipolar interactions being modulated by the superimposed reorientation of the t-butyl groups and their constituent methyl groups. The reorientation is successfully …

Some Issues On Time Varying Risk Premium In Arch-M Model., Samarjit Das Dr. Jun 2003

Some Issues On Time Varying Risk Premium In Arch-M Model., Samarjit Das Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Since the 1970's it has been observed in many economies that financial and macroeconomic variables like equity prices, treasury bill rates and exchange rates have become more and more volatile in nature. This may be due tumor flexible monetary policies pursued in these countries as well as due to their increasing exposure towards various international developments. Accordingly, economic agents are facing increasingly more and more risky environment. Re- searchers as well as professional economists in the area of capital and business finance have, therefore, been increasingly attracted in recent years towards studying the effect of risk and uncertainty on asset …

Maximization By Parts In Likelihood Inference, Peter Xuekun Song, Yanqin Fan, Jack Kalbfleisch Jun 2003

Maximization By Parts In Likelihood Inference, Peter Xuekun Song, Yanqin Fan, Jack Kalbfleisch

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

This paper presents and examines a new algorithm for solving a score equation for the maximum likelyhood estimate in certain problems of practical interest. The method circumvents the need to compute second order derivaties of the full likelihood function. It exploits the structure of certain models that yield a natural decomposition of a very complicated likelihood function. In this decomposition, the first part is a log likelihood from a simply analyzed model and the second part is used to update estimates from the first. Convergence properties of this fixed point algorithm are examined and asymptotics are derived for estimators obtained …

Inelastic Neutron Scattering Signal From Deconfined Spinons In A Fractionalized Antiferromagnet, Courtney Lannert, Matthew P.A. Fisher Jun 2003

Inelastic Neutron Scattering Signal From Deconfined Spinons In A Fractionalized Antiferromagnet, Courtney Lannert, Matthew P.A. Fisher

Physics: Faculty Publications

We calculate the contribution of deconfined spinons to inelastic neutron scattering (INS) in the fractionalized antiferromagnet (AF*), introduced elsewhere. We find that the presence of free spin-1/2 charge-less excitations leads to a continuum INS signal above the Néel gap. This signal is found above and in addition to the usual spin-1 magnon signal, which to lowest order is the same as in the more conventional confined antiferromagnet. We calculate the relative weights of these two signals and find that the spinons contribute to the longitudinal response, where the magnon signal is absent to lowest order. Possible higher-order effects of interactions …

Dissertations

This study investigated whether teacher leadership styles and teaching practices influenced teacher job satisfaction among public elementary school teachers in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The study answered the following questions: (1) what is the level of job satisfaction among public elementary school teachers in the CNMI; (2) to what extent do CNMI teachers fall into the personal leadership style categories of transactional or transformational; (3) to what extent do CNMI public school teachers prefer either didactic or constructivist teaching practices; (4) to what extent do demographic factors, preferred leadership styles, and preferred teaching practices affect the degree …

Radio Polarization Of The Young High-Magnetic-Field Pulsar Psr J1119-6127, Fronefield Crawford, Nathan C. Keim Jun 2003

Radio Polarization Of The Young High-Magnetic-Field Pulsar Psr J1119-6127, Fronefield Crawford, Nathan C. Keim

Physics

We have investigated the radio polarization properties of PSR J1119-6127, a recently discovered young radio pulsar with a large magnetic field. Using pulsar-gated radio imaging data taken at a center frequency of 2496 MHz with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we have determined a rotation measure for the pulsar of +842 +/- 23 rad m^-2. These data, combined with archival polarimetry data taken at a center frequency of 1366 MHz with the Parkes telescope, were used to determine the polarization characteristics of PSR J1119-6127 at both frequencies. The pulsar has a fractional linear polarization of ~75% and ~55% at 1366 …

Environment-Induced Degradation And Crack-Growth Studies Of Candidate Target Materials: Annual Progress Report (May 2002 – May 2003), Ajit K. Roy, Brendan O'Toole

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

As indicated in the original proposal, the primary objective of this task is to evaluate the effect of hydrogen on environment-assisted cracking of candidate target materials for applications in spallationneutron- target (SNT) systems such as accelerator production of tritium (APT) and accelerator transmutation of waste (ATW). The materials selected for evaluation and characterization are martensitic stainless steels including Alloy HT-9, Alloy EP 823 and Type 422 stainless steel. The susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of these materials are being evaluated in aqueous environments of interest using tensile specimens under constant load and slow-strain-rate (SSR) conditions. …

Use Of Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy For Stress-Strain Measurements: Annual Progress Report (May 2002 – May 2003), Ajit K. Roy

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The purpose of this collaborative research project involving the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) and Idaho State University (ISU) to evaluate the feasibility of determining residual stresses of welded, bent (three-point-bend), and cold-worked engineering materials using a new non-destructive technique based on positron annihilation spectroscopy. The proposed technique is the use γ-rays from a small MeV electron Linear accelerator (LINAC) to generate positrons inside the sample via pair production. This method can be used for materials characterization and investigation of defects in thick samples, which could not be accomplished by conventional positron technique or other non-destructive methods. The data …
