Terrestrial Natural Communities Of Nebraska (Version Iii - June 30, 2005), Gerry Steinauer, Steven B. Rolfsmeier
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
For more than a decade, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and state natural heritage programs, including the Nebraska Natural Heritage Program (NNHP), have used a “coarse filter/fine filter” approach to preserving biological diversity (The Nature Conservancy, 1994). This approach involves identification and protection of natural communities (coarse filter) as well as rare species (fine filter). Identifying and protecting representative examples of natural communities ensures conservation of most species, biotic interactions and ecological processes. Those species that “fall through” the community filters are generally the rare species. Identification and protection of viable occurrences of rare species serves as the fine filter for …

4,4'-Dinitrocarbanilide (Dnc) Concentrations In Egg Shells As A Predictor Of Nicarbazin Consumption And Dnc Dose In Goose Eggs, Randal S. Stahl, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Dennis Kohler, John J. Johnston
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Nicarbazin is being investigated as an infertility agent for the control of non-migratory Canada geese (Branta canadensis L) populations. Nicarbazin is presently registered for use as a coccidiostat for poultry. Geese fed sufficient quantities of nicarbazin will lay non-viable eggs. We established nicarbazin consumption by measuring the concentration of a component of the formulation, 4,4’-dinitrocarbanilide (DNC) in the egg contents (yolk, albumin) in non-viable eggs. To estimate the nicarbazin consumption of birds that laid viable eggs (eggs that hatched or contained an embryo), a high-performance liquid chromatography method was developed to measure the concentration of DNC in egg …

Effects Of Shelterwood Timber Harvesting On Understory Vegetation, Soil Nutrients, And Environmental Factors In A Virginia Piedmont Forest 3-5 Years Post-Harvest, Lisa B. Wilkins
Theses & Honors Papers
Shelterwood timber management methods impose moderate ground disturbance and allow increased light penetration to the understory after partial canopy removal. This study is a two-year segment of a long-term project analyzing understory vegetation patterns over time on shelterwood sites harvested in 1997 (n=4) and 1998 (n=2), and on mature, secondary-growth control sites (n=2). The sites were predominantly oak-hickory stands located in Appomattox and Buckingham counties, Virginia. Data were collected May - June of 2001 and 2002.Ten fixed plots were established on each of eight study sites and all plant species within the plots were identified. Coverage estimates were made for …

Focusing Of Spin Polarization In Semiconductors By Inhomogeneous Doping, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, Vladimir Privman
Focusing Of Spin Polarization In Semiconductors By Inhomogeneous Doping, Yuriy V. Pershin Dr, Vladimir Privman
Faculty Publications
We study the evolution and distribution of nonequilibrium electron spin polarization in n-type semiconductors within the two-component drift-diffusion model in an applied electric field. Propagation of spin-polarized electrons through a boundary between two semiconductor regions with different doping levels is considered. We assume that inhomogeneous spin polarization is created locally and driven through the boundary by the electric field. We show that an initially created narrow region of spin polarization can be further compressed and amplified near the boundary. Since the boundary involves variation of doping but no real interface between two semiconductor materials, no significant spin polarization loss is expected. …
Task Scheduling Of Processor Pipelines With Application To Network Processors, Seema Data, Mark A. Franklin
Task Scheduling Of Processor Pipelines With Application To Network Processors, Seema Data, Mark A. Franklin
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Chip Multi-Processors (CMPs) are now available in a variety of systems and provide the opportunity for achieving high computational performance by exploiting application-level parallelism. In the communications environment, network processors (NPs) are often designed around CMP architectures and in this context the processors may be used in a pipelined manner. This leads to the issue of scheduling tasks on processor pipelines. This paper considers problems associated with determining optimal application task assignments for such pipelines. A system and algorithm called Greedy Pipe is presented and its performance analyzed. The algorithm employs a greedy heuristic to schedule tasks derived from multiple …

Bioterrorism Syndromic Surveillance: A Dual-Use Approach With Direct Application To The Detection Of Infectious Disease Outbreaks, Kristin Broome Uhde
Bioterrorism Syndromic Surveillance: A Dual-Use Approach With Direct Application To The Detection Of Infectious Disease Outbreaks, Kristin Broome Uhde
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The threat of bioterrorism forces the public health infrastructure to focus attention on overall issues related to challenges posed by emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. There is a crucial need to strengthen existing surveillance systems and to validate real-time approaches to surveillance that can provide timely alerts of epidemics whether they occur naturally or through a bioterrorism attack. The purpose of this study is to implement and evaluate a bioterrorism syndromic surveillance system called BioDefend™, to determine if the system could detect a potential epidemic/bioterrorism attack within 24-36 hours, more rapidly than it would be identified by routine health surveillance. …

Search For Large Extra Dimensions In The Monojet +ET Channel With The Dø Detector, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration
Gregory Snow Publications
We present a search for large extra dimensions (ED) in pp̅ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV using data collected by the DØ detector at the Fermilab Tevatron in 1994–1996. Data corresponding to 78.8 ± 3.9 pb-1 are examined for events with large missing transverse energy, one high-pT jet, and no isolated muons. There is no excess observed beyond expectation from the standard model, and we place lower limits on the fundamental Planck scale of 1.0 and 0.6 TeV for 2 and 7 ED, respectively.

Search For The Supersymmetric Partner Of The Top Quark In Dilepton Events From Pp̅ Collisions At √S=1.8 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
We have searched for pair production of the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (stop) in 107 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s=1.8 TeV collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Each stop is assumed to decay into a lepton, bottom quark, and supersymmetric neutrino. Such a scenario would give rise to events with two leptons, two hadronic jets, and a substantial imbalance of transverse energy. No evidence of such a stop signal has been found. We exclude stop masses in the region (80≤ m t̅≤135 GeV/c2) in the mass plane of stop versus …

Investigation Of Third Party Rights Service And Shibboleth Modification To Introduce The Service, Sanket Agrawal
Investigation Of Third Party Rights Service And Shibboleth Modification To Introduce The Service, Sanket Agrawal
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
Shibboleth is an architecture to support inter-institutional sharing of electronic resources that are subject to access control. Codifying copyright in Shibboleth authorization policies is difficult because of the copyright exceptions which can be highly subjective. Third Party Rights Service is a high-level concept that has been suggested as a solution to approximate the exceptions of copyright law. In this thesis, I investigate the components of the Third Party Rights Service. I design and analyze a modified Shibboleth architecture based on these components. The resulting architecture allows for the phased addition of the resources to make use of the Third Party …

Multisite Observations Of The Pms Δ Delta Scuti Star V351 Ori, V. Ripepi, Terry D. Oswalt, M. Marconi, S. Bernabei, Et Al.
Publications
We present the results of multisite observations spanning two years on the pre–main-sequence (PMS) star V351 Ori. A total of around 180 hours of observations over 29 nights have been collected, allowing us to measure five different periodicities, most likely related to the Scuti variability of V351 Ori. Comparison with the predictions of linear nonadiabatic radial pulsation models put stringent constraints on the stellar parameters and indicate that the distance to V351 Ori is intermediate between the lower limit measured by Hipparcos (210 pc) and that of the Orion Nebula (450 pc). However, radial pulsation models are unable to reproduce …

Resampling-Based Multiple Testing: Asymptotic Control Of Type I Error And Applications To Gene Expression Data, Katherine S. Pollard, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
We define a general statistical framework for multiple hypothesis testing and show that the correct null distribution for the test statistics is obtained by projecting the true distribution of the test statistics onto the space of mean zero distributions. For common choices of test statistics (based on an asymptotically linear parameter estimator), this distribution is asymptotically multivariate normal with mean zero and the covariance of the vector influence curve for the parameter estimator. This test statistic null distribution can be estimated by applying the non-parametric or parametric bootstrap to correctly centered test statistics. We prove that this bootstrap estimated null …
Turbulence, Magnetics, And Closure Equations, Jane Pratt
Turbulence, Magnetics, And Closure Equations, Jane Pratt
HMC Senior Theses
When a ferromagnet is heated, it loses its magnetism. Stars and planets have magnetic fields, as does the Earth. But it is known that the center of the Earth is very hot. Therefore, to sustain the large magnetic field of a planet, we cannot look to simple ferromagnetism like that of a bar magnet, but we have to look at the movement of electric charges within the Earth’s molten core to generate magnetic field. This magnetic field sustainment against ohmic dissipation by turbulent flow is referred to as the turbulent dynamo effect. Theoretical research into the mechanisms that create the …

Statistical Implications Of Pooling Rna Samples For Microarray Experiments, Xuejun Peng, Constance L. Wood, Eric M. Blalock, Kuey Chu Chen, Philip W. Landfield, Arnold J. Stromberg
Statistics Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Microarray technology has become a very important tool for studying gene expression profiles under various conditions. Biologists often pool RNA samples extracted from different subjects onto a single microarray chip to help defray the cost of microarray experiments as well as to correct for the technical difficulty in getting sufficient RNA from a single subject. However, the statistical, technical and financial implications of pooling have not been explicitly investigated.
RESULTS: Modeling the resulting gene expression from sample pooling as a mixture of individual responses, we derived expressions for the experimental error and provided both upper and lower bounds for …
