Central Pseudorapidity Gaps In Events With A Leading Antiproton At The Fermilab Tevatron P̅P Collider, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report a measurement of the fraction of events with a large pseudorapidity gap Δη within the pseudorapidity region available to the proton dissociation products X in p̅+p→p̅+X. For a final state p̅of fractional momentum loss ξp̅ and 4-momentum transfer squared tp̅ within 0.06<ξp̅tp̅|2 at √s=1800 [630] GeV, the fraction of events with Δη>3 is found to be 0.246±0.001 (stat)±0.042 (syst) [0.184±0.001 (stat)±0.043 (syst)]. Our results are compared with gap fractions measured in minimum bias p̅p collisions and with theoretical expectations.

So(2,1) Conformal Anomaly: Beyond Contact Interactions, Horacio E. Camblong Jul 2003

So(2,1) Conformal Anomaly: Beyond Contact Interactions, Horacio E. Camblong

Physics and Astronomy

The existence of anomalous symmetry-breaking solutions of the SO(2,1) commutator algebra is explicitly extended beyond the case of scale-invariant contact interactions. In particular, the failure of the conservation laws of the dilation and special conformal charges is displayed for the two-dimensional inverse square potential. As a consequence, this anomaly appears to be a generic feature of conformal quantum mechanics and not merely an artifact of contact interactions. Moreover, a renormalization procedure traces the emergence of this conformal anomaly to the ultraviolet sector of the theory, within which lies the apparent singularity.

The results in …

Hands-On Manipulative Use In Science Instruction, Bianca Lee Domenico Jul 2003

Hands-On Manipulative Use In Science Instruction, Bianca Lee Domenico

Theses and Dissertations

This study tested the use of physical manipulatives during science instruction – in conjunction with the traditional, textbook-oriented approach – and determines whether manipulatives create more significant learning experiences than text generates alone. The subject sample consisted of 20 third-grade students from a suburban New Jersey elementary school classroom. All subjects functioned at least on a third-grade level in all subjects with the exception of three students, who participated in the Talented and Gifted Program. Subjects from the experimental group and the control group completed a science content pretest of thirteen open-ended cognition questions. Both groups completed assigned activities, and …

Experimental And Calculated Stark Widths Within The Kr I Spectrum, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Stevan Djenize, Milan S. Dimitrijevic Jul 2003

Experimental And Calculated Stark Widths Within The Kr I Spectrum, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Stevan Djenize, Milan S. Dimitrijevic

Articles

On the basis of the precisely recorded 20 neutral krypton (Kr I) line shapes (in the 5s−5p and 5s−6p transitions), we have obtained the basic plasma parameters, i.e., electron temperature (T) and electron density (N) using our line deconvolution procedure in a plasma created in a linear, low-pressure, pulsed arc discharge operated in krypton. The mentioned plasma parameters have also been measured using independent experimental diagnostics techniques. Agreement has been found among the two sets of the obtained parameters. This recommends our deconvolution procedure for plasma diagnostical purposes, especially in astrophysics where direct measurements of the …

Advice For The Secretary Of Agriculture About Management Of The Giant Sequoia National Monument, J. N. Clarke, D. M. Graber, K. M. Nissen, D. D. Piirto, N. L. Stephenson, D. R. Tormey, P. E. Waggoner

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Landscapes held in public trust are difficult to manage; a living National Monument subject to increased public use presents additional challenges. These landscapes are subject to regional and global effects outside the manager's control, such as global climate change and air pollution. They are also subject to innumerable local variables, most of whose effects are difficult to predict. The giant sequoia groves and their surrounding ecosystem are fiercely loved by many; although the goals may be broadly similar, the objectives and policies of these giant sequoia lovers are often sharply at odds.

Technical Efficiency In Public And Private Sectors In India: Evidence From The Post-Reform Years, T. T. Ram Mohan, Subhash C. Ray Jul 2003

Technical Efficiency In Public And Private Sectors In India: Evidence From The Post-Reform Years, T. T. Ram Mohan, Subhash C. Ray

Economics Working Papers

While India's state-owned enterprises are widely believed to be inefficient, there is a dearth of studies that document such inefficiency on any rigorous basis. Yet, since improvement in firm efficiency is one of the basic objectives of privatization, it is important to assess whether efficiency is indeed lower in the public sector than in the private sector. This paper compares the performance of state-owned enterprises with those of private sector firms in respect of technical efficiency. The comparison is made in eight different sectors over the period 1991-92 to 1998-99. We measure technical efficiency using the method of Data Envelopment …

Classwide Peer Tutoring With Or Without Competitive Reinforcement: Impact On Academic Growth And Intrinsic Interest, Dale R. De Weerd Jul 2003

Classwide Peer Tutoring With Or Without Competitive Reinforcement: Impact On Academic Growth And Intrinsic Interest, Dale R. De Weerd

Master of Education Program Theses

This study examined the effects of Classwide Peer Tutoring on students' academic gains and intrinsic interest in two fourth-grade math classes under two conditions-c-with competitive reinforcement (CWPT + CR) and without competitive reinforcement (CWPT - CR). Extending spelling CWPT research of C. C. Cheung and S. Winter (1999), this study utilized an adapted multiplication pretest and posttest and the Attitude Toward Mathematics Scale, developed by Peterson (1978). Study results showed a lack of statistical significance regarding group differences at posttest. However, due to traditional CWPT's impact on classroom atmosphere, peer perception, and learning focus, the investigator recommends eliminating competitive reinforcement …

Rotational Velocities Of B, A, And Early‐F Narrow‐Lined Stars, Francis C. Fekel

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Projected rotational velocities for 58 B, A, and early‐F stars have been determined from high‐resolution spectroscopic observations made at Kitt Peak National Observatory with the coudé feed telescope. All the stars are slowly rotating with vsin i<60 km s−1. Because of their low rotational velocities, 15 of the stars have been observed as prospective, early‐type, radial velocity standards.

Stephen Ducharme Publications

We report the studies of the molecular conformation and chain orientations through characterization of the vibrational modes in crystalline Langmuir–Blodgett films of the polyvinylidene fluoride/trifluoroethylene copolymer. The infrared spectra obtained by polarized reflectometry and ellipsometry showed that the ferroelectric phase has predominantly all-trans conformation and the paraelectric phase has predominantly alternating trans-gauche conformation, as in solvent-formed films of the same copolymer. The results showed that the polymer chains are predominantly parallel to the film plane with a random in-plane orientation and most of the ferroelectric phase vibrational mode behaviors are consistent with the published mode assignments. The ferroelectric phase optical …

Nonautonomous Difference Equations: Open Problems And Conjectures, Saber Elaydi Jul 2003

Nonautonomous Difference Equations: Open Problems And Conjectures, Saber Elaydi

Mathematics Faculty Research

Autonomous difference equations of the form xn+1 = ƒ (xn) may model populations of species with nonoverlaping generations such as fish, orchard pests, etc. The drawback of such models is that they do not account for environmental fluctuations or seasonal changes. Hence we are led to nonautonomous difference equations of the form xn+1 = ƒ (xn), n ∈ Ζ+. Our main focus in this note will be on periodic difference equations in which the sequence ƒn is periodic. Most of the open problems and conjectures in this …
