Influence Of Aluminum Ion On The Anaerobic Treatment Of A Poultry Slaughterhouse Wastewater, Julio Alberto Martinez Aug 2003

Influence Of Aluminum Ion On The Anaerobic Treatment Of A Poultry Slaughterhouse Wastewater, Julio Alberto Martinez

Theses and Dissertations

The influence of Al 3+ on the anaerobic treatment of a poultry slaughterhouse wastewater was studied in this work. The soluble COD (SCOD), volatile acid (VA) concentrations, and methane yield values were measured and compared for zero, 15, and 40 ppm Al 3+ runs. Methane yields of 55.4, 144.2, and 215.4 ml CH4/g. COD for zero, 15, and 40 ppm Al 3+ concentrations, respectively, were observed. Furthermore, SCOD and VAs were not detectable in the reactor that was seeded with 40 ppm Al 3+. It was concluded that inhibitory effects of long chain fatty acids (LCFAs) on aceticlastic methanogens were …

Motion Estimation And Compensation In The Redundant Wavelet Domain, Suxia Cui Aug 2003

Motion Estimation And Compensation In The Redundant Wavelet Domain, Suxia Cui

Theses and Dissertations

Despite being the prefered approach for still-image compression for nearly a decade, wavelet-based coding for video has been slow to emerge, due primarily to the fact that the shift variance of the discrete wavelet transform hinders motion estimation and compensation crucial to modern video coders. Recently it has been recognized that a redundant, or overcomplete, wavelet transform is shift invariant and thus permits motion prediction in the wavelet domain. In this dissertation, other uses for the redundancy of overcomplete wavelet transforms in video coding are explored. First, it is demonstrated that the redundant-wavelet domain facilitates the placement of an irregular …

Evaluation Of A Product Development Process Through Uncertainty Analysis Techniques, Pang Hui Wong Aug 2003

Evaluation Of A Product Development Process Through Uncertainty Analysis Techniques, Pang Hui Wong

Theses and Dissertations

For any product development process, limited time and resources are always a focus for the engineer. However, will the overall program goals be achieved with the provided time and resources? Uncertainty analysis is a tool that is capable of providing the answer to that question. Product development process uncertainty analysis employs previous knowledge in modeling, experimentation, and manufacturing in an innovative approach for analyzing the entire process. This research was initiated with a pilot project, a four-bar-slider mechanism, and an uncertainty analysis was completed for each individual product development step. The uncertainty of the final product was then determined by …

Finite Element Modeling Of Crack Tip Plastic Anisotropy With Application To Small Fatigue Cracks And Textured Aluminum Alloys, Gabriel Petru Potirniche Aug 2003

Finite Element Modeling Of Crack Tip Plastic Anisotropy With Application To Small Fatigue Cracks And Textured Aluminum Alloys, Gabriel Petru Potirniche

Theses and Dissertations

For the characterization of crack advance in mechanical components and specimens under monotonic and fatigue loading, many engineering approaches use the assumption that the plastic deformation at the crack tip is isotropic. There are situations when this assumption is not correct, and the modeling efforts require additional correction factors that account for this simplification. The goal of this work is to study two cases where the plastic anisotropy at the crack tip is predominant and influences the magnitude crack-tip parameters, which in turn determine the amount of crack advance under applied loading. At the microstructural level, the small crack issue …

Experimental Measurement And Finite Element Simulation Of Springback In Stamping Aluminum Alloy Sheets For Auto-Body Panel Application, Crisbon Delfina Joseph Aug 2003

Experimental Measurement And Finite Element Simulation Of Springback In Stamping Aluminum Alloy Sheets For Auto-Body Panel Application, Crisbon Delfina Joseph

Theses and Dissertations

Use of weight-saving materials to produce lightweight components with enhanced dimensional control is important to the automotive industry. This has increased the need to understand the material behavior with respect to the forming process at the microstructural level. A test matrix was developed based on the orthogonal array of Taguchi design of experiment (DOE) approach. Experiments were conducted for the V-bending process using 6022-T4 AA to study the variation of springback due to both process and material parameters such as bend radius, sheet thickness, grain size, plastic anisotropy, heat treatment, punching speeds, and time. The design of experiments was used …

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Neural Networks For Elemental Concentration From Libs Spectra, Prasanthi Inakollu Aug 2003

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Neural Networks For Elemental Concentration From Libs Spectra, Prasanthi Inakollu

Theses and Dissertations

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an advanced data analysis technique for spectral analysis based on the direct measurement of the spectrum of optical emission from a laser-induced plasma. Assignment of different atomic and ionic lines, which are signatures of a particular element, is the basis of a qualitative identification of the species present in plasma. The relative intensities of these atomic and ionic lines can be used for the quantitative determination of the corresponding elements present in different samples. Calibration curve based on absolute intensity is the statistical method of determining concentrations of elements in different samples. Since we need …

A Global Preconditioning Method For The Euler Equations, B. Gazi Yildirim Aug 2003

A Global Preconditioning Method For The Euler Equations, B. Gazi Yildirim

Theses and Dissertations

This study seeks to validate a recently introduced global preconditioning technique for the Euler equations. Energy and enthalpy equations are nondimensionalized by means of a reference enthalpy, resulting in increased numerical accuracy for low-speed flows. A cellbased, finite volume formulation is used, with Roe flux difference splitting and both explicit and implicit time integration schemes. A Newton-linearized iterative implicit algorithm is implemented, with Symmetric Gauss-Seidel (LU/SGS) nested sub-iterations. This choice allows one to retain time accuracy, and eliminates approximate factorization errors, which become dominant at low speed flows. The linearized flux Jacobians are evaluated by numerical differentiation. Higher-order discretization is …

Computer Simulation Studies For The Production Of 7-Tetradecene By Reactive Distillation, Sandra Viviana Bennun Serrano Aug 2003

Computer Simulation Studies For The Production Of 7-Tetradecene By Reactive Distillation, Sandra Viviana Bennun Serrano

Theses and Dissertations

The production of 7-tetradecene was examined. Properties for this compound were estimated using group contribution methods and compared to experimental data. Process simulation was used as a tool to identify competitive processing strategies. For reactive distillation, three different models were compared to determine the model complexity needed to describe the process: Model A, with the assumption of physical and chemical equilibrium; Model B, with kinetics described by a second order reaction and physical equilibrium; and Model C, a non-equilibrium stage model that accounts for mass transfer. A conceptual design was obtained with Model B and was checked with Model C, …

Combined Ozone And Ultraviolet Inactivation Of Escherichia Coli, Gaurav Savant Aug 2003

Combined Ozone And Ultraviolet Inactivation Of Escherichia Coli, Gaurav Savant

Theses and Dissertations

The kinetics of Escherichia coli inactivation were studied using ultraviolet (UV) radiation, ozone, and UV and ozone (UVO) in combination in a batch reactor at varying pH levels (6, 7, and 8) and at a constant temperature of 25°C. The inactivation kinetics for all three treatment processes was pseudo first order, and the reaction rate constants were considered to be additive such that a combined reaction rate could be obtained by adding the kinetic rates of the processes applied and numerically small rates could be neglected in the computation of the combined rate. Statistical tests (ANOVA and student's t-test) performed …

High-Performance Matrix Multiplication: Hierarchical Data Structures, Optimized Kernel Routines, And Qualitative Performance Modeling, Wenhao Wu Aug 2003

High-Performance Matrix Multiplication: Hierarchical Data Structures, Optimized Kernel Routines, And Qualitative Performance Modeling, Wenhao Wu

Theses and Dissertations

The optimal implementation of matrix multiplication on modern computer architectures is of great importance for scientific and engineering applications. However, achieving the optimal performance for matrix multiplication has been continuously challenged both by the ever-widening performance gap between the processor and memory hierarchy and the introduction of new architectural features in modern architectures. The conventional way of dealing with these challenges benefits significantly from the blocking algorithm, which improves the data locality in the cache memory, and from the highly tuned inner kernel routines, which in turn exploit the architectural aspects on the specific processor to deliver near peak performance. …

Fair-Weather Fans: The Correlation Between Attendance And Winning Percentage, Darren B. Glass

Math Faculty Publications

In Rob Neyer's chapter on San Francisco in his Big Book of Baseball Lineups, he speculates that there aren't really good baseball cities, and that attendance more closely correlates with winning percentage than with any other factor. He also suggests that a statistically minded person look at this. I took the challenge and have been playing with a lot of data.

Avhrr-Based Spectral Vegetation Index For Quantitative Assessment Of Vegetation State And Productivity: Calibration And Validation, Felix Kogan, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Edige Zakarin, Lev Spivak, Lubov Lebed

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The goal of the work was to estimate, quantitatively, vegetation state and productivity using AVHRR-based Vegetation Condition Index (VCI). The VCI algorithm includes application of post-launch calibration to visible channels, calculation of NDVI from channels’ reflectance, removal of high-frequency noise from NDVI’s annual time series, stratification of ecosystem resources, and separation of ecosystem and weather components in the NDVI value. The weather component was calculated by normalizing the NDVI to the difference of the extreme NDVI fluctuations (maximum and minimum), derived from multi-year data for each week and land pixel. The VCI was compared with wheat density measured in Kazakhstan. …

When Abelian Groups Split, Rachel M. Thomas, Robert C. Rhoades Aug 2003

When Abelian Groups Split, Rachel M. Thomas, Robert C. Rhoades

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

Let S be a hyperbolic surface tiled by kaleidoscopic triangles. Let Re denote the set of fixed points by the reflection in an edge, e, of a triangle. We say that Re is separating if S-Re has two components. Once we have a tiling, we can define a group of orientation preserving transformations, G. We develop a method for determining when a reflection is separating using the group algebra of G. Using this method we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a mirror to be separating when G is abelian. We also conjecture, that …

A Search For Pure Disk Galaxies, Stefan Kautsch, Eva K. Grebel Aug 2003

A Search For Pure Disk Galaxies, Stefan Kautsch, Eva K. Grebel

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Flat (or superthin) galaxies are late-type edge-on spiral galaxies that exhibit large axial ratios, small stellar disk scale heights and no distinct spheroidal bulge component. This type of galaxies appears to be a pure disk system with an extended blue stellar disk embedded in a red thick layer. Flat galaxies are very common objects with low star formation rates, low metallicities, low optical surface brightness but high neutral gas fractions. Their rotation curves resemble those of dwarf and irregular galaxies. These simple disk systems offer the unique opportunity to constrain galaxy disk evolution in underevolved galaxies in the nearby Universe. …

Staying Longer At School And Absenteeism: Evidence From Australian Research And The Longitudinal Surveys Of Australian Youth., Sheldon Rothman

LSAY Conference Papers

Youth in Transition (YIT), a program of longitudinal surveys conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), began in 1978. The program was designed to trace national samples of 6 000 young people who were born in 1961 and had participated as 14-year-olds in the Australian Studies in School Performance in 1975 (Keeves & Bourke, 1976). New samples were added in 1981, 1985 and 1989, based on cohorts of young people born in 1965, 1970 and 1975, respectively. Data were collected on each of the first three cohorts until the mid-1990s; data collection from the 1975 birth cohort ended …

Quantum Invariants Of Templates, Louis H. Kauffman, Masahico Saito, Michael C. Sullivan

Articles and Preprints

We define invariants for templates that appear in certain dynamical systems. Invariants are derived from certain bialgebras. Diagrammatic relations between projections of templates and the algebraic structures are used to define invariants. We also construct 3-manifolds via framed links associated to tamplate diagrams, so that any 3-manifold invariant can be used as a template invariant.

Measuring School Effects Across Grades, Njora Hungi Aug 2003

Measuring School Effects Across Grades, Njora Hungi

Shannon Research Press

This study investigates the issue of the value-added components of the education provided across Grade 3 and Grade 5 in primary schools in South Australia and how these components could be measured. The study shows that it is very difficult to identify effective or ineffective schools because the amount of variance left unexplained at the school-level is small. As a solution to this problem, it is more meaningful to identify effective or ineffective schools when the school effects are expressed in terms of years of learning that a student spends at school.
