Students’ Cognitive Load On Computer Programming Instructional Process Using Example-Problem-Based Learning And Problem-Based Learning Instructional Model At Vocational High School, Admaja Dwi Herlambang, Muhammad Rifqy Ramadana, Satrio Hadi Wijoyo, Muneeroh Phadung

Elinvo (Electronics, Informatics, and Vocational Education)

This paper fills an essential gap in applying cognitive load theory in teaching computer programming within vocational settings. It is an important area to consider for improving students' learning processes who intend to enter the rapidly changing technology sector. This study assessed the distinct impacts of the instructional paradigms, specifically Example-Problem-Based Learning (EPBL) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL), on students’ cognitive loads upon framing an iterative structure lesson on computer programming. Vocational programming education is chosen for this purpose because vocational education faces unique challenges in integrating practical skills development with theoretical understanding, and programming tasks involve high cognitive demands. Task 32 Delayed Hydride Cracking Of Spent Fuel Cladding Under Repository Conditions, Ajit K. Roy, Anthony Hechanova, Amy J. Smiecinski

Publications (YM)

The objective of this quality-affecting task is to evaluate the susceptibility of spent nuclear fuel cladding materials (zirconium alloys) to stress corrosion cracking (SCC), delayed hydride cracking (DHC) and localized corrosion (pitting/crevice) in simulated repository environments. During the first year of this project, major efforts were focused on developing the infrastructure for performing the desired testing involving two highly corrosion-resistant alloys namely, zircaloy-2 (Zr-2) and zircaloy-4 (Zr-4) in simulated concentrated acidic water (SAW) and modified SAW (SAWM). Modification of the SAW chemistry was done by adding hydrochloric acid (HC1) to achieve lower pH. The construction of the "Materials Performance Laboratory …

The Urban/Suburban Wildlife Survey Volunteer Project, Larissa L. Smith Sep 2003

The Urban/Suburban Wildlife Survey Volunteer Project, Larissa L. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined attitudes of volunteers in the Urban/Suburban Volunteer Project. Volunteers for this project surveyed for bird species for the New Jersey Endangered and Nongame Species Program in Urban New Jersey areas. This project was considered unsuccessful by the Endangered and Nongame Species staff. By analyzing a volunteer project that was not as successful as hoped, volunteer managers can learn from this and apply the findings to their own projects. The purpose of this study was to find out what volunteers thought of the Urban/Suburban Volunteer Project.

Questionnaires were sent to the known population, a total of 25 questionnaires …

Kinetics Of Ferroelectric Switching In Ultrathin Films, G. Vizdrik, Stephen Ducharme, V.M. Fridkin, S.G. Yudin Sep 2003

Kinetics Of Ferroelectric Switching In Ultrathin Films, G. Vizdrik, Stephen Ducharme, V.M. Fridkin, S.G. Yudin

Stephen Ducharme Publications

The kinetics of polarization switching in ultrathin ferroelectric polymer films exhibit a critical behavior; there is a pronounced slowing just above the coercive field and just below the critical temperature. The critical slowing is observed in the switching kinetics of ferroelectric Langmuir-Blodgett films of 70% vinylidene-fluoride and 30% trifluoroethylene copolymer with thickness up to 30 ML. Thicker films exhibit an exponential dependence on the field and temperature that is normally associated with extrinsic switching by domain nucleation and growth. We show that the critical behavior arises naturally from the dynamics of homogeneous intrinsic switching in the context of mean-field theory. …

Lawrence University Physicist Awarded $178,000 National Science Foundation Grant, Lawrence University Sep 2003

Lawrence University Physicist Awarded $178,000 National Science Foundation Grant, Lawrence University

Press Releases

A curious visitor peering through the glass of Room 044 in the basement of Lawrence University’s Science Hall and seeing the large, elevated, aluminum “drum,” its wide sides wrapped with thick, black bundles of wire amid an array of other attached tubes and hoses, might conclude they had just stumbled upon an industrial-strength, high-tech washing machine. Or perhaps a remnant of eccentric “Doc” Brown’s “Back to the Future” workshop.

Far from being a fancy Maytag or a mad scientist movie prop, the contraption is the cornerstone of Lawrence University associate professor of physics Matthew Stoneking’s scientific research. The drum, a …

Effect Of Polarizability Of Halide Anions On The Ionic Salvation In Water Clusters, S. Yoo, Y.A. Lei, Xiao Cheng Zeng Sep 2003

Effect Of Polarizability Of Halide Anions On The Ionic Salvation In Water Clusters, S. Yoo, Y.A. Lei, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Molecular dynamics simulation has been performed to study the effect of the polarizabilities of model anions on the ionic solvation in water clusters. The primary focus is given to the surface versus interior solvation behavior of the anions. To this end, various combinations of polarizable/nonpolarizable water and anion models were considered. Using the nonpolarizable TIP4P water with polarizable Cl2 and Br2 models, the Cl2 is fully solvated inside the (H2O) 60 cluster, whereas the Br2 is partially solvated at the surface of the cluster. However, when the polarizability of the Br2 is turned …

The purpose of the “Thermal Transport Evaluations Related to Waste Package Design” Task # 19 of Cooperative Agreement Number DE-FC28-98NV12081 was to develop a new CFDHT model for heat transfer and fluid flow in the potential rsepository at the Yucca Mountain, Nevada and to study the effects of forced convection during the pre-closure period and natural convection during the postclosure period. The analysis was performed for the drift dimensions shown in Figure 4-1 below. The intended use of the model is to estimate the velocity and temperature distribution as well as the highest temperature in the drift during the pre-closure …

Are We Legislating Away Our Scientific Future? The Database Debate, Dov Greenbaum Sep 2003

Are We Legislating Away Our Scientific Future? The Database Debate, Dov Greenbaum

Duke Law & Technology Review

The ambiguity of the present copyright laws governing the protection of databases creates a situation where database owners, unsure of how IP laws safeguard their information, overprotect their data with oppressive licenses and technological mechanisms (condoned by the DMCA) that impede interoperation. Databases are fundamental to scientific research, yet the lack of interoperability between databases and limited access inhibits this research. The US Congress, spurred by the European Database Directive, and heavily lobbied by the commercial database industry, is presently considering ways to legislate database protections; most of the present suggestions for legislation will be detrimental to scientific progress. The …

Quantum Noise In Gravitational-Wave Interferometers: Overview And Recent Developments, Thomas Corbitt, Nergis Mavalvala Sep 2003

Quantum Noise In Gravitational-Wave Interferometers: Overview And Recent Developments, Thomas Corbitt, Nergis Mavalvala

Faculty Publications

We present an overview of quantum noise in gravitational wave interferometers. Gravitational wave detectors are extensively modified variants of a Michelson interferometer and the quantum noise couplings are strongly influenced by the interferometer configuration. We describe recent developments in the treatment of quantum noise in the complex interferometer configurations of present-day and future gravitational-wave detectors. In addition, we explore prospects for the use of squeezed light in future interferometers, including consideration of the effects of losses, and the choice of optimal readout schemes.

The Logic Of Peace, Jonathan Schell Sep 2003

The Logic Of Peace, Jonathan Schell

New England Journal of Public Policy

Jonathan Schell’s The Unconquerable World points the way out of the devastation of the twentieth century toward another, more peaceful path. And his investigations into the great nonviolent events of modern times — from Gandhi’s independence movement in India to the explosion of civic activity that brought about the surprising collapse of the Soviet Union — suggest foundations of an entirely new kind on which to construct an enduring peace. As Schell makes clear, all-out war, with its risk of human extinction, must cease to play the role of final arbiter. “The Logic of Peace,” printed here, is the final …

Worldview And Culture: Leadership In Sub-Sahara Africa, Betsie Smith Sep 2003

Worldview And Culture: Leadership In Sub-Sahara Africa, Betsie Smith

New England Journal of Public Policy

The traditional worldview and culture of Africa was very different from that of the West today: man was at the center of a religious universe; time was generally felt to be under the control of man, not the reverse; the belief that the dead are able to influence the living enhanced reverence for the elderly; a belief in collectivism was far stronger than a belief in individualism. Colonial- ism, the Cold War, and three decades following independence upset the traditional African worldview and created bewildering frictions within the political, economic, and social wellbeing of the continent. The role of African …

Perpendicular Transport Of Solar Energetic Particles In Heliospheric Magnetic Fields, Ming Zhang, Jack Randy Jokipii, Robert Bruce Mckibben Sep 2003

Perpendicular Transport Of Solar Energetic Particles In Heliospheric Magnetic Fields, Ming Zhang, Jack Randy Jokipii, Robert Bruce Mckibben

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

This paper presents direct observational evidence for large perpendicular diffusive flows of solar energetic particles in heliospheric magnetic fields. Using anisotropy measurements of 40-92 MeV protons obtained by the High-Energy Telescope of the COSPIN consortium on Ulysses at high heliographic latitudes, we find that during several gradual solar particle events, for periods of many hours, the observed particle flow is directed at significant angles to the measured local magnetic field direction, which can only be explained by cross-field diffusion. The variation of the particle flow direction with the magnetic field direction seen in the 2000 July 14 solar energetic particle …
