Magnetic Storage Device Using Induced Magnetic Reversal Of A Cobalt, Scott Whittenburg Oct 2003

Magnetic Storage Device Using Induced Magnetic Reversal Of A Cobalt, Scott Whittenburg

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The effects of the applied field, cell size, and cutting area on the ‘‘seed’’ induced magnetic reversal of a cobalt element array have been studied by a stochastic dynamic micromagnetics code using the Laudau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equation. Three magnetic reversal mechanisms under different magnitudes of the applied field have been investigated by examining the energy profiles. To minimize the effect of the thermal fluctuations on the switching time, an applied field with magnitude around 0.7 or 0.8 T and an element array with cutting area less than 10 nm310 nm are required. By using the smaller cellsize, the switching time and the …

Identification And Prediction Of Nonlinear Dynamics, Andrew Dick Oct 2003

Identification And Prediction Of Nonlinear Dynamics, Andrew Dick

Theses

Chaos theory and associated analyses are being applied to a growing number of disciplines. Studies of biological and ecological systems have shown the widest application of chaotic analyses thus far. When studying these systems, it is often only possible to measure a subset of the system's many variables. To effectively perform a number of the analyses required to study a chaotic system, it is necessary to identify a complete strange attractor for the system. Consequently, it is necessary to reconstruct the system's strange attractor from the available data. Many different methods exist for reconstructing strange attractors, but the effectiveness of …

Climate: Past, Present, And Future, Saxon E. Sharpe, Rick Forester, Amy J. Smiecinski

Publications (YM)

Climatology and meteorology studies in the Yucca Mountain area have resulted in the following key observations and conclusions: • The present-day arid climate of the Yucca Mountain area can be understood in terms of global-scale atmospheric circulation and regional to-local physiographic features. In general terms, the area is under the influence of mid-latitude westerly winds and associated storm systems during the cool part of the year and and is under the influence of moist air advected from the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean and Gulf of California during the summer. Temperature and precipitation data from Nevada regions 3 and 4 (southern …

Exact Multiplicity For Periodic Solutions Of Duffing Type, Hongbin Chen, Yi Li, Xiaojie Hou Oct 2003

Exact Multiplicity For Periodic Solutions Of Duffing Type, Hongbin Chen, Yi Li, Xiaojie Hou

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study the following Duffing-type equation:

x″+cx′+g(t,x)=h(t),

where g(t,x) is a 2π-periodic continuous function in t and concave–convex in x, and h(t) is a small continuous 2π-periodic function. The exact multiplicity and stability of periodic solutions are obtained.

In this paper we show how Internet-like protocols may be used to coordinate and control the usage of a resource by n agents. Lyapunov second method is used to provide sufficient stability conditions of the dynamics of the n agents in the presence of time delay.

Restoration Treatments In The Middle Rio Grande Bosque: Effect On Soil Compaction, Cody Lee Stropki Oct 2003

Restoration Treatments In The Middle Rio Grande Bosque: Effect On Soil Compaction, Cody Lee Stropki

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Mechanical removal of exotic woody plants that fuel catastrophic fires in the Middle Rio Grande Bosque (riparian forest) of New Mexico has the potential to compact bosque soils and alter soil properties. Salt cedar and Russian olive trees were introduced to the area in the early 1900's for erosion control and bank stabilization. In some areas these exotic trees out compete the native cottonwoods and willows. Flood control projects have exasperated the problem. Historic over-bank flooding helped to remove dead and downed wood while providing the right conditions for Cottonwood regeneration.

Perturbation Approach To The Self-Energy Of Non-S Hydrogenic States, Eric Olivier Le Bigot, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Peter J. Mohr, Paul Indelicato, Gerhard Soff Oct 2003

Perturbation Approach To The Self-Energy Of Non-S Hydrogenic States, Eric Olivier Le Bigot, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Peter J. Mohr, Paul Indelicato, Gerhard Soff

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present results on the self-energy correction to the energy levels of hydrogen and hydrogenlike ions. The self energy represents the largest QED correction to the relativistic (Dirac-Coulomb) energy of a bound electron. We focus on the perturbation expansion of the self energy of non-S states, and provide estimates of the so-called A60 perturbative coefficient, which can be considered as a relativistic Bethe logarithm. Precise values of A60 are given for many P, D, F and G states, while estimates are given for other electronic states. These results can be used in high-precision spectroscopy experiments in hydrogen and …

The Impact Of Simulated Digital Data Radio Communication Induced Interference On Voice Radio Communication Intelligibility, Daniela Kratchounova Oct 2003

The Impact Of Simulated Digital Data Radio Communication Induced Interference On Voice Radio Communication Intelligibility, Daniela Kratchounova

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

Testing to date indicates there is a significant potential for adverse interference from the digital system to the analog system, especially for General Aviation (GA) aircraft. This type of interference can be described as short, random bursts of noise capable of completely obliterating parts of the voice communication. The subsequent degrading effects on voice radio communication could jeopardize flight safety. To address this issue, the goal of the present study was to examine the degree to which such noise impacts voice radio communication intelligibility. Intelligibility was assessed employing a classic, well-established psycho-acoustic method, which uses human beings, rather than electronic …

Transactional Stress: Challenge In A Capsule Environment, G. Daniel Steel Oct 2003

Transactional Stress: Challenge In A Capsule Environment, G. Daniel Steel

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

For the past five decades, research into specific features of capsule environments has been of interest to psychologists who study extreme environments. Along with this interest is a corollary theoretical effort to develop a classification system along general dimensions. The main impetus behind this endeavour appears to be a concern regarding the hypothetically harmful impact of the features. This article provides a brief overview of the environmental classification systems of Sells (1973), Harrison and Connors (1984), and Suedfeld (1987), and notes that many aspects of these approaches overlap the revised and more general transactional model of stress proposed by Folkman …

A Beautiful Mend: A Game Theoretical Analysis Of The Dormant Commerce Clause Doctrine, Maxwell L. Stearns Oct 2003

A Beautiful Mend: A Game Theoretical Analysis Of The Dormant Commerce Clause Doctrine, Maxwell L. Stearns

William & Mary Law Review

While the Commerce Clause neither mentions federal courts nor expressly prohibits the exercise of state regulatory powers that might operate concurrently with Congressional commerce powers, the Supreme Court has long used the dormant Commerce Clause doctrine to limit the power of states to regulate across a diverse array of subject areas in the absence of federal legislation. Commentators have criticized the Court less for creating the doctrine than for applying it in a seemingly inconsistent, or even haphazard way. Past commentators have recognized that a game theoretical model, the prisoners' dilemma, can explain the role of the dormant Commerce Clause …

Toy Models For The Falling Chimney, Gabriele U. Varieschi, Kaoru Kamiya Oct 2003

Toy Models For The Falling Chimney, Gabriele U. Varieschi, Kaoru Kamiya

Physics Faculty Works

In this paper we review the theory of the ‘‘falling chimney,’’ which deals with the breaking in mid-air of tall structures when they fall to the ground. We show that these ruptures can be caused by either shear forces typically developing near the base, or by the bending of the structure which is caused primarily by the internal bending moment. In the latter case the breaking is more likely to occur between one-third and one-half of the height of the chimney. Small scale toy models are used to reproduce the dynamics of the falling chimney. By examining photos taken during …
