Acquisition And Deacquisition Of Museum Collections And The Fiduciary Obligations Of Museums To The Public, Patty Gerstenblith
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The article examines the legal and ethical implications of museums' restitution of stolen or looted cultural artifacts, arguing that such restitutions do not violate fiduciary obligations but highlight the importance of proper acquisition and deaccessioning policies. It emphasizes that museums, as nonprofit entities, must balance their educational mission with legal and ethical duties, ensuring transparency and accountability in managing cultural heritage.
Discourse And Presence As They Relate To Online Interaction, Andy Conrad
Discourse And Presence As They Relate To Online Interaction, Andy Conrad
Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations
The extent to which students learn subject material is based upon the richness of discourse and presence that are introduced into the learning situation. It is important to determine the significance of discourse and presence in the online environment. Discourse is the foundation of any learning experience by which pertinent ideas in subject matter are communicated to the learner. The primary intent of discourse is to enhance the perspective of the learner within a specific topic or area of study, although how discourse is handled is determined by the individual. Regardless of medium, discourse is a natural requirement, and the …
Pynchon In Popular Magazines, John K. Young
Pynchon In Popular Magazines, John K. Young
English Faculty Research
Any devoted Pynchon reader knows that “The Secret Integration” originally appeared in The Saturday Evening Post and that portions of The Crying of Lot 49 were first serialized in Esquire and Cavalier. But few readers stop to ask what it meant for Pynchon, already a reclusive figure, to publish in these popular magazines during the mid-1960s, or how we might understand these texts today after taking into account their original sites of publication. “The Secret Integration” in the Post or the excerpt of Lot 49 in Esquire produce different meanings in these different contexts, meanings that disappear when reading …

Why They Fight: Combat Motivation In The Iraq War, Thomas A. Kolditz Col, Leonard Wong Dr., Raymond A. Millen Ltc, Terrence M. Potter Col
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
With the recent lightning swift combat successes of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, there may be a tendency to view with awe the lethality of U.S. technology and training. The researchers, however, argue that the true strength of America's military might lies not in its hardware or high-tech equipment, but in its soldiers. Dr. Leonard Wong and his colleagues traveled to Iraq to see what motivated soldiers to continue in battle, to face extreme danger, and to risk their lives in accomplishing the mission. As a means of comparison, they began by interviewing Iraqi Regular Army prisoners of war to examine their …

All The Elephants Faced The Door: Fiction And Poetry, Stephanie B. Thome
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
All the Elephants Faced the Door is a collection of fiction and poetry. The first section, “The World is Nice to Butterflies,” is a collection of six short stories. The collection focuses on the Solis family. The family consists of six sisters and the stories follow their journey of falling in love, forming romantic relationships and the eventuality of marriage. The second half of my manuscript is composed of poems and is divided in three sections. The first, “The Stuff of the World is Love-Stuff,” is a sequence of love poems. The second section entitled, “Domestic Anxiety,” is a series …
Agamemnon's Test Of The Army In Iliad Book 2 And The Function Of Homeric Akhos, Erwin F. Cook
Agamemnon's Test Of The Army In Iliad Book 2 And The Function Of Homeric Akhos, Erwin F. Cook
Classical Studies Faculty Research
I offer a reading of the Diapeira episode based on the semantics and thematics of akhos. My findings resolve a crux at 2.171, where Homer identifies akhos as the reason Odysseus is not launching his ship. Homer clearly signposts the nature of Odysseus' akhos as grief over loss of time in Athene's subsequent speech to him, but the reference is proleptic and has consequently eluded the commentators.
Livelihood And Identity Constructions Of Somali Refugees In Cairo, Mulki Al-Sharmani
Livelihood And Identity Constructions Of Somali Refugees In Cairo, Mulki Al-Sharmani
Faculty Journal Articles
Throughout its history, Cairo has hosted many foreigners and refugees. In the first half of the twentieth century the refugee population in Cairo consisted of Armenians, Palestinians, and Sudanese. Many of the Armenians have moved since then to other countries. More Palestinians and Sudanese have moved to Cairo in the second half of the century. In the last two decades, the refugee population has widened to include sizeable numbers of refugees from Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Somalia as well as more Sudanese.1 In addition to being one of the drafting members, Egypt is a party to 1951 UN Convention relating to …

Mobilizing The Masses: The Need For Vision And Charisma, Christi R. Calvano
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This study examined the significance of vision and charisma as the two pertinent characteristics that explain the difference in the degree of commitment of followers. The following hypotheses were proposed: (1) Leaders who espouse a more inclusive vision are more likely to mobilize highly committed followers; and (2) Leaders who are more charismatic are more likely to mobilize highly committed followers. ' Leaders of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States and the Independence Movement in India, specifically, Martin Luther King, Jr., Roy Wilkins, Stokely Carmichael, Mohandas Gandhi, Abul Kalam Azad, and Mohammad Ali Jinnah were assessed. Two orations …
Identifying The Dimensions Of Integrity: A Confirmatory And Discriminant Validity Analysis, Arlene Pace Green
Identifying The Dimensions Of Integrity: A Confirmatory And Discriminant Validity Analysis, Arlene Pace Green
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
While Integrity tests have demonstrated significant predictive and concurrent validity, the meaning and structure of integrity test scores are not well understood. The purpose of the present investigation was to empirically verify the results of a previous study that used an inductive method to define integrity and identify its constituent dimensions (Green, 1999). Specifically, the present investigation used item analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, discriminant validity analysis, and an analysis of social desirability to test the validity of the five integrity dimensions identified by Green (1999): Concern for Others, Conscientiousness, Emotional Control, Fairness, and Honesty. Results confirmed that Integrity acts as …
The Laconomics Of Apples And Oranges: A Speculative Analysis Of The Economic Concept Of Commensurability, Jeanne L. Schroeder
The Laconomics Of Apples And Oranges: A Speculative Analysis Of The Economic Concept Of Commensurability, Jeanne L. Schroeder
Articles
The article challenges the commensurability debate, arguing that the opposition between commensurability and incommensurability is not a resolvable conflict but a necessary paradox rooted in human subjectivity and symbolic thought. Drawing on the philosophical traditions of Kant, Hegel, and Lacan, the analysis posits that both quantitative and qualitative aspects are essential in legal and economic decision-making, emphasizing the need to manage rather than resolve this paradox. The speculative approach suggests that rationality involves acknowledging and navigating this duality, rather than adhering to one side of the debate.

Mexican Immigrant Communities In The South And Social Capital: The Case Of Dalton, Georgia, Rubén Hernández-León, Victor Zúñiga
Mexican Immigrant Communities In The South And Social Capital: The Case Of Dalton, Georgia, Rubén Hernández-León, Victor Zúñiga
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
During the 1990s, the South became a major new destination for Mexican and other Latino settled immigration. This paper contends that as Mexican immigrants have moved in sizable numbers to atypical destinations, they have also mobilized social capital and funds of knowledge from the historical concentrations of Latino settlement (i.e., Los Angeles and Chicago) to new areas, such as the South. Using qualitative and descriptive quantitative data collected in Dalton, Georgia, a small city located in the southern Appalachia region, this article shows how previously accumulated social capital and funds of knowledge are facilitating settlement with collective and individual level …

The Effect Of Manipulative Materials On Student Motivation, Deirdre Morrissey
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this project was to determine the effect of manipulative materials on student motivation in the subject area of social studies. The students who participated in the project were divided into control and experimental groups. Each group was comprised of twenty-one third grade students living in rural southern New Jersey. Both groups completed pre and post surveys that focused on student motivation towards social studies. The experimental group students were instructed using manipulative materials after the completion of the initial survey and in conjunction with a unit on "Community Government." The control group students received no such intervention. …

Design Of Fuzzy Nonlinear Robust Compensator And Its Application On Submarines, Cheng-Neng Hwang, Joe- Ming Yang
Design Of Fuzzy Nonlinear Robust Compensator And Its Application On Submarines, Cheng-Neng Hwang, Joe- Ming Yang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
A robust nonlinear composite controller, which is simple in structure and has the characteristics of good tracking performance and guaranteed system stability, is designed in this study. A pre-compensator is proposed to eliminate uncertainties or disturbances so that the tracking error is bounded in a pre-specified ball. The composite control law proposed in this study guarantees system tracking precision and stability by the aid of a third-order differential equation that has been derived in this research. The control parameters in the proposed controller can be adjusted systematically. For unknown serious variation in system surrounding, a composite control law with fuzzy-type …
