Hindu-Christian Dialogue: Revisiting The Tannirpalli Trinitys Original Vision, Klaus Klostermaier Jan 2003

Hindu-Christian Dialogue: Revisiting The Tannirpalli Trinitys Original Vision, Klaus Klostermaier

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Living in India from 1961 to 1970 I intensively and extensively participated in Hindu-Christian dialogue at various levels, academic as well as existential, and I came to know personally most of the then leading figures. While Hindu friends even then kept regularly imploring their Christian counterparts to persuade their churches to desist from proselytizing, they welcomed and encouraged dialogue. During the last decades the relationship between Hindus and Christians in India has visibly deteriorated.

Dr. Richard De Smet And Sankara's Advaita, T.S. Rukmani Jan 2003

Dr. Richard De Smet And Sankara's Advaita, T.S. Rukmani

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

I have had the privilege of meeting Dr. Richard De Smet in Shimla at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, when we both participated in a Seminar organized by the Institute in 1989. We had opportunities of discussing Sankara's Brahman and the Christian concept of God at that time without being able to fully understand each other's position. That has been at the back of my mind all these years, and I was happy when Bradley Malkovsky asked me to write on Dr. De Smet's view of Sankara's Brahman for the Bulletin. I thus got an opportunity to revisit that …

Foreword: The Administrative Law Of The European Union, Francesca Bignami Jan 2003

Foreword: The Administrative Law Of The European Union, Francesca Bignami

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This special issue of Law and Contemporary Problems is devoted to the administrative law of the European Union. The foreword sets the stage by narrating the history of legal scholarship on European administration, explaining the public law methodology of the contributors, and describing the different legal styles that separate the civil from the common law traditions and that mark the contributions. The foreword then previews the individual articles, organized by the law of centralized or “direct” administration by the European Commission and the law of decentralized or “mixed” administration, in which national civil servants interact with their counterparts elsewhere and …

Assimilation Versus Autonomy: Indigenous Education In Mexico, Gordon Lee Gent Jan 2003

Assimilation Versus Autonomy: Indigenous Education In Mexico, Gordon Lee Gent

Honors Theses

Indigenous education became prevalent in the ideology of the Mexican government after the Revolution on 1911. The leading school of thought about how to integrate Mexico’s indigenous population was led by anthropologists. Through indigenismo, the government adopted policies that would explore indigenous communities and promote them into the national identity. Bilingual education became one of the most important instruments of the movement under the direction of the Instituto Nacional Indigenista. I collected my data from a wealth of resources. One source of information the historical texts written on Mexican history. Anthropological texts also aided in the discussion of indigenous people …

Individual Differences And Strategies For Human Reasoning, Alison Bacon Jan 2003

Individual Differences And Strategies For Human Reasoning, Alison Bacon

School of Psychology Theses

Theories of human reasoning have tended to assume cognitive universality, i. e. that all individuals reason in basically the same way. However, some research (e. g. that of Ford. 1995) has found evidence of individual differences in the strategies people use for syllogistic reasoning. This thesis presents a series of experiments which aimed to identify individual differences in strategies for human reasoning and investigate their nature and aetiology. Experiment 1 successfully replicated and extended Ford (1995) and provided further evidence that most individuals prefer to reason with either verbal-propositional or visuo-spatial representations. Data from verbal and written protocols showed that …

Us-Versus-Them: Framing Of Islam And Muslims After 9/11, Kimberly A. Powell, Houda Abadi Jan 2003

Us-Versus-Them: Framing Of Islam And Muslims After 9/11, Kimberly A. Powell, Houda Abadi

Iowa Journal of Communication

The reality created by the media is powerful enough to create lasting images and stereotypes about groups, religions and peoples (Maslog, 1971). That the Western media is biased in issues regarding the Arab world is accepted as fact in the Middle East, though denied by reporters in the West (Baroud, 2002). In a 2002 poll of Muslim Americans, 67% said the media have grown more biased against Muslims after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 (CAIR, 2002). This study aimed to discover what narrative frames the media created of Muslims and Islam in the three months following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Empirical Inquiry Twenty-Five Years After The Lawyering Process, Stefan H. Krieger, Richard K. Neumann Jr. Jan 2003

Empirical Inquiry Twenty-Five Years After The Lawyering Process, Stefan H. Krieger, Richard K. Neumann Jr.

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

One of the many ways in which The Lawyering Process was a pioneering book was its extensive reliance on empirical research about lawyers, lawyering, and activities analogous to some or another aspect of lawyering. To what extent has the clinical field accepted Gary Bellow and Bea Moulton's invitation to explore empirical studies generated outside legal education and perhaps engage in empirical work ourselves to understand lawyering more deeply? Although some clinicians have done good empirical work, our field as a whole has not really accepted Gary and Bea's invitation. This article explains empirical ways of thinking and working; discusses some …

An Ill-Wind That Blows No One Good: Cluster Analysis Of A Constitutional Scholar's Illness Metaphor And Resistance Rhetoric Targeting The President, Congress, And November 13th Military Order, Pamela Lutgen-Sandvik Jan 2003

An Ill-Wind That Blows No One Good: Cluster Analysis Of A Constitutional Scholar's Illness Metaphor And Resistance Rhetoric Targeting The President, Congress, And November 13th Military Order, Pamela Lutgen-Sandvik

Iowa Journal of Communication

In response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush issued a military order authorizing the Department of Justice to detain and hold persons suspected of terrorism or of having connections with terrorists. This article analyzes a constitutional scholar’s rhetoric of resistance to the president’s military order in the face of nearly overwhelming popular support for the president’s actions. Through the use of Kenneth Burke’s cluster and agon analysis, the author examines the December 4, 2001 testimony of Dr. Laurence H. Tribe to the Senate Judiciary Committee of the 107th United States Congress.

Lost Boys And Forgotten Girls: Intercountry Adoption, Human Rights, And African Children, Barbara Stark Jan 2003

Lost Boys And Forgotten Girls: Intercountry Adoption, Human Rights, And African Children, Barbara Stark

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Everyone knows the story of the Lost Boys of Sudan, thousands of children who lost their families and villages to brutal civil war, fleeing across East Africa to Kenya, where they survived in a desolate refugee camp. Their story spread, and several thousand of the Lost Boys were resettled in the United States. There, they asked their suburban foster families whether there were lions in the bush, learned how to use can openers and televisions, and saw snow.

While the Boys were lost -- and then found -- the Girls were forgotten. As a recent editorial in Refugees, a publication …
