Situated Learning, Distributed Cognition: Do Academics Really Need To Know?, Anne Murphy Nov 2003

Situated Learning, Distributed Cognition: Do Academics Really Need To Know?, Anne Murphy

Journal Articles

The dominant approach to the study of learning throughout most of the twentieth century was to view learning as cognitive only, as if it were a process contained in the mind of the learner, decontextualised from the lived-in world

Twixt, Karen Schlesinger Nov 2003

Twixt, Karen Schlesinger

Theses

This thesis discusses photographs exhibited at the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences Gallery at Rochester Institute of Technology from April 28 - May 10, 2003. In these photographs of desecrated landscapes at liminal times of day, the eerie light and vibrant colors of dusk and dawn enable me to create views of my personal world, a foreign and perilous place for some audiences, an intoxicating and disquieting environment for others. As the light gives way to darkness, the deepening shadows of the vegetation come alive as monstrous figures. Fears lurk in the darkness and become threatening creatures of the …

Tendencies Versus Boundaries: Levels Of Generality In Behavioral Law And Economics, Gregory Mitchell Nov 2003

Tendencies Versus Boundaries: Levels Of Generality In Behavioral Law And Economics, Gregory Mitchell

Vanderbilt Law Review

When evidence on the truth or falsity of a proposition is ambiguous and open to multiple interpretations, psychologists warn about "biased assimilation" of the evidence to support pre-existing theories, beliefs, and attitudes. Therefore, when a skeptic about the public policy implications of psychological research examines the complex mix of evidence on human rationality, he may find much to support his skepticism about the use of psychology to reform the law. Likewise, an optimist about the public policy contributions of psychology may find within this same body of evidence much to bolster his optimistic view that psychological research can be used …

Monaural Speech-In-Noise Thresholds Using The Hearing In Noise Test (Hint), Denise Parrish Nov 2003

Monaural Speech-In-Noise Thresholds Using The Hearing In Noise Test (Hint), Denise Parrish

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Understanding speech in background noise is occasionally difficult for normal hearing listeners and is often impossible for the listener with sensorineural hearing loss. The ability to understand speech in noise depends upon multiple factors such as the characteristics of the speech signal, the signal-to-noise ratio, and the listener's degree of hearing impairment. A routine hearing evaluation usually does not provide ample information about a listener's functional communication abilities. The Hearing-in-Noise Test (HINT) developed by The House Ear Institute provides an efficient and reliable method for evaluating an individual's suprathreshold speech understanding ability in quiet and in noise.

The purpose of …

Aspek Sintagmatis Dan Kolokasi Dalam Sinonimi Taksempurna Bahasa Prancis, Irzanti Sutanto Oct 2003

Aspek Sintagmatis Dan Kolokasi Dalam Sinonimi Taksempurna Bahasa Prancis, Irzanti Sutanto

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Synonymous verbs are often confusing because on the one hand verbal pairs have the same meanings but on the other they cannot replace one another in all contexts. This paper examines the contexts of synonymous verbal pairs in French. It shows that aspects that limit the synonymity of a set of words are verbal meanings, semantic characteristics of accompanying words, verbal valence, syntactyc structure, and the commoness of usage of the words. The observation shows that 1) the contexts of the synonymous pairs cannot replace one another although the meanings of both are the same, and 2) the difference in …

Effect Sizes, Significance Tests, And Confidence Intervals: Assessing The Influence And Impact Of Research Reporting Protocol And Practice, Melinda Rae Hess Oct 2003

Effect Sizes, Significance Tests, And Confidence Intervals: Assessing The Influence And Impact Of Research Reporting Protocol And Practice, Melinda Rae Hess

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study addresses research reporting practices and protocols by bridging the gap from the theoretical and conceptual debates typically found in the literature with more realistic applications using data from published research. Specifically, the practice of using findings of statistical analysis as the primary, and often only, basis for results and conclusions of research is investigated through computing effect size and confidence intervals and considering how their use might impact the strength of inferences and conclusions reported.

Using a sample of published manuscripts from three peer-rviewed journals, central quantitative findings were expressed as dichotomous hypothesis test results, point estimates of …

Fpga-Based Implementation Of Concatenative Speech Synthesis Algorithm, Praveen Kumar Bamini Oct 2003

Fpga-Based Implementation Of Concatenative Speech Synthesis Algorithm, Praveen Kumar Bamini

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The main aim of a text-to-speech synthesis system is to convert ordinary text into an acoustic signal that is indistinguishable from human speech. This thesis presents an architecture to implement a concatenative speech synthesis algorithm targeted to FPGAs. Many current text-to-speech systems are based on the concatenation of acoustic units of recorded speech. Current concatenative speech synthesizers are capable of producing highly intelligible speech. However, the quality of speech often suffers from discontinuities between the acoustic units, due to contextual differences. This is the easiest method to produce synthetic speech. It concatenates prerecorded acoustic elements and forms a continuous speech …

Claiming Opportunities: A Handbook For Improving Education For English Language Learners Through Comprehensive School Reform, Maria Coady, Edmund T. Hamann, Margaret Harrington, Maria Pacheco, Samboeun Pho, Jane Yedlin Oct 2003

Claiming Opportunities: A Handbook For Improving Education For English Language Learners Through Comprehensive School Reform, Maria Coady, Edmund T. Hamann, Margaret Harrington, Maria Pacheco, Samboeun Pho, Jane Yedlin

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

For the last decade, the national comprehensive school reform movement has been a focus of efforts to make public education accessible and effective for all students. Comprehensive reform strives to improve schooling for all children through integrated, well-aligned, school- wide changes in instruction, assessment, curriculum, classroom management, school governance, professional development, technical assistance, and community participation. As a sign of its continuing support for comprehensive school reform, Congress formally incorporated the Comprehensive School Reform program (CSR) into the Elementary and Secondary Act (No Child Left Behind, or NCLB) of 2001.

The last decade has also seen a dramatic increase in …

The Allures And Illusions Of Modernity: Technology And Educational Reform In Egypt, Mark Warschauer Oct 2003

The Allures And Illusions Of Modernity: Technology And Educational Reform In Egypt, Mark Warschauer

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Much of the research to date on educational technology has focused on its implementation in wealthy countries. Yet instructional technology has a special allure in the developing world, where it holds the promise not just of improving schools but also of hastening modernization. This article examines a national educational technology effort in Egypt, illuminating the contradictions between the rhetoric of reform and the reality of school practices. The analysis points to underlying political, cultural, and economic factors that constrain attempts to improve Egyptian schooling with technology.
