Through A Mirror Dimly: Social Constructionism Through The Lens Of Faith, Amy Quillin

Growth: The Journal of the Association for Christians in Student Development

Postmodernism has often been excoriated in Christian circles for its departure from commonly recognized principles of truth seeking. How can we, as educators, help students grapple wisely with this pervasive worldview in the context of encouraging a biblical and vibrant development of their faith? Are there components within postmodernism that might help inform students’ faith development? This article will examine social constructionism, a variant of postmodernism, from the lens of Christian faith and spirituality, and will attempt to answer some of those questions.

Towards Foundations Of Processing Imprecise Data: From Traditional Statistical Techniques Of Processing Crisp Data To Statistical Processing Of Fuzzy Data, Hung T. Nguyen, Tonghui Wang, Vladik Kreinovich Jan 2003

Towards Foundations Of Processing Imprecise Data: From Traditional Statistical Techniques Of Processing Crisp Data To Statistical Processing Of Fuzzy Data, Hung T. Nguyen, Tonghui Wang, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In traditional statistics, we process crisp data - usually, results of measurements and/or observations. Not all the knowledge comes from measurements and observations. In many real-life situations, in addition to the results of measurements and observations, we have expert estimates, estimates that are often formulated in terms of natural language, like "x is large". Before we analyze how to process these statements, we must be able to translate them in a language that a computer can understand. This translation of expert statements from natural language into a precise language of numbers is one of the main original objectives of fuzzy …

Each and every child will be at a unique literacy level with differences spanning in reading comprehension, word analysis, use of reading strategies, written communication, and other key areas. Education tends to follow "hot topics" and trends of research, but a balanced reading approach to literacy will continue to be vital in reaching the spectrum of students. Research was conducted through both a literary review of educational resources and a sixteen week student teaching experience to construct four individual units for use in a fourth …

La Educación Indígena En Las Américas Indigenous Education In The Americas (Spanish Edition With English Translations), World Learning

SIT Occasional Papers

World Learning first entered the intercultural field as a nongovernmental organization in the early 1930s under the name The Experiment in International Living (EIL). The Experiment, as it was known for many years, engaged primarily in intercultural educational exchange programs. By the 1950s, however, EIL initiated its first academic mobility programs in cooperation with various universities at a time when most did not yet conduct their own overseas programs. In the 1960s, the development of an academic unit, the School for International Training (SIT), helped expand the organization’s education efforts to include students enrolled in various degree-granting programs, further extending …

The phrasal verb is a unique type of verb phrase that consists of a main verb, usually of only one or two syllables, followed by a particle, that works as a single semantic unit. Never Settle, Keep Exploring : A Reflective Essay, Brenton D. Shavers

Graduate Research Papers

I taught 3rd and 4th grades in an urban area in St. Paul, MN. This was an eye opening experience for someone right out of college. I was one of two African American teachers and one of only three males in the building. A principal, entering the building for her 1st time as their new leader, placed me into a leadership position immediately.I found myself spending countless hours in activities outside of school, in support of my students. It became increasingly evident that these supports needed to be in place for both students and their families in order for the …

In response, Kristina Valaitis, director, Illinois Humanities Council, asks tough, affectionate questions of her university-based colleagues, and offers “suggestions for action,” including some pointed advice on the tenure system

Progress And Opportunities In Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Transgender Health Communications, Laurie A. Drabble, J. Keatley, G. Marcelle

Faculty Publications

This article describes elements of effective health communication and highlights strategies that may best be adopted or adapted in relation to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations. Studies have documented the utility of multidimensional approaches to health communication from the macro level of interventions targeting entire populations to the micro level of communication between health care provider and consumer. Although evidence of health disparities in LGBT communities underscores the importance of population-specific interventions, health promotion campaigns rarely target these populations and health communication activities seldom account for the diversity of LGBT communities. Advances in health communication suggest promising direction …

Exploring Visual Learning In The Basic Writing Classroom, Prince Michael Ferguson

For many students in basic writing classrooms the language of writing assignments, essay prompts and required reading is especially difficult. Therefore, some teachers are using approaches other than logical or linguistic methods to assist these students. This thesis details some of the methods teachers and researchers are using. Most significant is a case study that explores the use of visuals in a basic writing classroom. The results of the case study and a survey instrument suggest that there is a niche for alternative methods and the use of visuals in the basic writing classroom.
