Using Earth Science Research Projects To Develop Collaboration Between Scientists At A Research University And K-12 Educators: Insights For Future Efforts, David C. Gosselin, Richard Levy, Ronald J. Bonnstetter

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The main goal of this pilot project was to improve collaboration between scientists at a large research university and K-12 educators. By involving scientists and K-12 educators in Earth systems research, we hoped to improve scientists’ awareness of current pedagogy and classroom practices, improve K-12 teachers understanding of actual scientific research and expose each group to the other’s unique culture. Eight research teams (comprising a scientist, pre-service teacher and an in-service teacher) participated in a four-week research experience, attended three half-day workshops, and participated in focus group interviews. This experience reinforced K-12 teachers views that scientific inquiry must be integrated …

Building Literacy For Knowledge Economies: Reading And Writing About Trends And Issues In Business Week, Clive Muir

Faculty Publications

Knowledge economies require highly skilled workers to perform complex, information-based tasks with minimum supervision. Yet, studies in Canada and the United States show that even college educated workers often lack the information literacy skills necessary to perform their jobs. In this session, we will discuss how reading and writing about business trends and issues can help to improve business students’ analytical and critical thinking abilities.

Parental Satisfaction In A Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Victoria S. Koontz

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify if the factors which indicate parental satisfaction of parents who have children admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) were being attained. The research questions were: 1) Was there a relationship between healthcare environment and parent satisfaction; 2) Was there a relationship between patient care and parent satisfaction; 3) Was there a relationship between communication and parent satisfaction? Parental satisfaction will be defined as meeting the parent’s perceived needs of the child and family during admission to the PICU (McPherson, 1999). This study used McPherson’s Parental Satisfaction Survey (PSS). The …

Chasing Demons: Female Villains And Narrative Strategy In Victorian Sensation Fiction, Heather Sowards Jan 2003

Chasing Demons: Female Villains And Narrative Strategy In Victorian Sensation Fiction, Heather Sowards

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This thesis explores Victorian sensation fiction and key authors who rely on essentialism, employing the classifications of either angel or demon to their literary female figures. Using Nina Auerbach's theories on these above categorizations and Helene Cixous's linguistic binaries, I examine the ways in which the narrators of Mary Elizabeth Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret, Sheridan Le Fanu's Uncle Silas, and Wilkie Collins's Heart and Science force this taxonomy onto the female villains who dominate the novels' themes. By looking closely at the narrative strategies, I conclude that these female characters themselves are proposing a very different sense of self or …

Emergent Literacy Activities In Preschool Years : The Effects Of Explicit Instruction On Rhyming And Narrative Development, Kristie Dawn Callihan Jan 2003

Emergent Literacy Activities In Preschool Years : The Effects Of Explicit Instruction On Rhyming And Narrative Development, Kristie Dawn Callihan

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Reading, a vitally important skill, develops early in a young child’s life. Research suggests that strong phonological awareness and narrative skills predict reading success. Using children’s literature that emphasized either rhymes (one of the earliest phonological awareness skills to emerge) or narrative structure, this study examined the effect of explicit teaching of rhymes and narrative structure on young children’s improvement in the ability to recognize and generate rhyming words and on improvement in the sophistication of narrative retellings. The results of this study, as well as the implications these findings have for speech-language pathologists and the need for further research, …

After Enron: Remembering Loyalty Discourse In Corporate Law, Lyman P.Q. Johnson Jan 2003

After Enron: Remembering Loyalty Discourse In Corporate Law, Lyman P.Q. Johnson

Scholarly Articles

The demise of monetary damages as a remedy for breach of the corporate director duty of due care means that only a breach of the duty of loyalty or good faith affords the possibility of holding corporate directors personally liable for wrongdoing. The author argues that the fiduciary duty of loyalty contains both a widely appreciated, but rather minimal, "non-betrayal" aspect and a less appreciated, but more affirmative, "devotion" dimension. The affirmative. thrust of loyalty, grounded in widely-shared cultural norms and finding expression in myriad literary and religious stories, offers a doctrinal avenue for addressing a potentially broader range of …

An Analysis Of It-Clefts Within A Role And Reference Grammar Framework, Emma Pavey Jan 2003

An Analysis Of It-Clefts Within A Role And Reference Grammar Framework, Emma Pavey

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

The it-cleft construction (e.g. "It was Bill that I saw") is generally accepted to be a marked syntactic bi-clausal option which expresses a simple semantic proposition; in terms of information structure, the construction places an element in focus position, within a copular matrix clause. This element receives an exhaustive interpretation; that is, in the case of (1), it is Bill, and only Bill, that was seen. These clefts lack a straightforward mapping between their syntactic, semantic and pragmatic structures and as a result are a prime construction to illustrate the advantages of Role and Reference Grammar which is able to …

There Is No Pperiphery: Globalising Culture And The Cinematographic Language Of Cultural Mediation In Modern European Film, Sascha Harris Jan 2003

There Is No Pperiphery: Globalising Culture And The Cinematographic Language Of Cultural Mediation In Modern European Film, Sascha Harris

Conference Papers

The paper investigates the various narrative and cinematographic strategies employed in Pasolini's 'The Gospel According to St Matthew' (1964), Tarkovsy's 'Andrei Rublev' (1966) and Kieslowski's 'A Short Film about Love' (1988) to correct and undermine a decentred representation which is structured around power-informed centre-periphery relations. It discusses the issue of assumed centrality and modern alienation through instrumentalised, detached perception.

Evidence That Demands A Verdict?, David J. Weber Jan 2003

Evidence That Demands A Verdict?, David J. Weber

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

Source—Meaning—Receptor (SMR) theories of translation, such as "dynamic equivalence" and "meaning-based" theories, shifted focus from the equivalence of FORM to the equivalence of MEANING. SMR theories were a significant advance and have been the basis for many modern English translations.

However, SMR theories were formulated when the dominant theory of communication was the code model. Consequently they presumed that meaning was determined almost entirely by a text (utterance) itself. This theory is now rejected in favor of theories that understand interpretation as the inferential product of the interaction of the text with (mind-mediated) context. These newer theories shift the focus …

Counseling Students With Limited English Proficiency, Michiru Shiraishi

Graduate Research Papers

As the United States experiences ever-increasing cultural diversity, school and mental health counselors are struggling to find an effective counseling style for these clients. This study focuses on students with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). It addresses possible issues that LEP students will face, the things the counselors need to be aware of when counseling LEP students, the way to work with LEP students' parent(s), using various assessments to understand students, teaming with the English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor, using interpreters, and applying the community counseling model as a guideline to counsel LEP students.

The Nature Of Holy Scripture In Roman Catholic Discussion From Vatican Ii To The New Catechism, John D. Morrison

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Vatican II and Scripture while affirming traditional Catholic views, is still vague enough for divergent and radical views of the word of God. Gives an analysis of the views on Scripture by such RC theologians as Karl Rahner, Raymond Brown, Avery Dulles, and Richard Swinburne. Notes the clarifications made in the New Catechism.

Positive Orientation Towards The Vernacular Among The Talysh Of Sumgayit, Calvin F. Tiessen Jan 2003

Positive Orientation Towards The Vernacular Among The Talysh Of Sumgayit, Calvin F. Tiessen

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

This thesis looks at the identification of positive vernacular orientation in the Talysh community of the city of Sumgayit, Azerbaijan, for the purpose of gaining a greater understanding of its causes. Positive vernacular orientation is described in three areas of sociolinguistic behaviour: patterns of vernacular language use, vernacular language proficiency and frequency of vernacular-speaking individuals in social networks. Variation in vernacular orientation is shown to pattern itself according to differences in generation and time of arrival or birth in Sumgayit.
