Looking At Participatory Planning In Cuba… Through An Art Deco Window, Marie Kennedy, Lorna Rivera, Chris Tilly Jul 2003

Looking At Participatory Planning In Cuba… Through An Art Deco Window, Marie Kennedy, Lorna Rivera, Chris Tilly

Women’s and Gender Studies Faculty Publication Series

Last January we sat with about thirty Cubans in a community arts center in Boyeros, on the outskirts of Havana, Cuba. The group included artists, teachers, social workers, government officials, architects, engineers and health professionals, all working in Boyeros. We were leading a three-day participatory planning workshop to help this group identify ways that the 1930s Art Deco arts center, currently under renovation, could be used to spark broader community development. As the first day drew to a close, we felt good about the day’s work. We had turned the Cubans loose in a small group exercise that used art …

Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews Jul 2003

Economic Currents: The State Of The State Economy, Alan Clayton-Matthews

Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series

The state economy appears poised for future growth, but serious issues remain. The “unwinding” of the economic excesses of the 1990s is delaying a genuine economic turnaround, but many other issues are weighing heavily on the economy. These include the risk of terrorism, weak global economic performance, a weak dollar (this issues cuts two ways), and the threat of deflation. When a recovery arrives, job growth will probably lag, and be modest when it appears. We should not expect to return to the heady days of the late 1990s anytime soon.

Characterization Of Environmentally Friendly Polymers: Amylopectin And Its Blends, Mohammad Osman Melibari Jul 2003

Characterization Of Environmentally Friendly Polymers: Amylopectin And Its Blends, Mohammad Osman Melibari

Theses and Dissertations

Biodegradable polymers are desirable for a variety of applications, such as in packaging, agriculture, and medicine. Its biological degradation by microorganisms accelerated the interest in biodegradable polymers during the last decades. Within this group of innovative environmentally friendly biodegradable polymers, starch or Amylpectin plays a predominant role, due to their potential biodegradability. This research was attempted to characterize Amylopectin to obtain its physio-chemical properties. In addition, characterizations were extended to include blends of Amylopectin and biodegradable diluents. Blends of Amylopectin with biodegradable diluents including Polycaprolactone, Poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide), and Poly(3- hydroxybutyric acid) were prepared. The physical properties and the thermodynamic characteristics of …

Doing Rawls Justice: An Experimental Study Of Income Distribution Norms, Philip A. Michelbach, John T. Scott, Richard E. Matland, Brian H. Bornstein Jul 2003

Doing Rawls Justice: An Experimental Study Of Income Distribution Norms, Philip A. Michelbach, John T. Scott, Richard E. Matland, Brian H. Bornstein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Distributive justice has been the focus of political theory with the postwar rise of the social welfare state, and Rawls’ A Theory of Justice (1971) is arguably the most important work of political philosophy during that period. Parallel to this theoretical literature is a body of empirical research into distributive justice. We offer a synthesis of the theoretical and empirical approaches with an experimental study of how individuals use allocation principles in making judgments concerning income distribution under conditions of strict impartiality. Our experiment is designed in part to examine the extent to which they prioritize them consistent with Rawls’ …

Border Patrol, Carl E. Schneider Jul 2003

Border Patrol, Carl E. Schneider

Recently, the Supreme Court has encountered cases that concern perhaps our weightiest bioethical issue-how medical care is to be rationed. But this does not mean that the Court must therefore assess the justice of rationing, as many people incited by many journalists now fondly and firmly believe. In explaining why, we begin with a story about how Learned Hand remembered saying one day to Justice Holmes, "Well, sir, goodbye. Do justice!" Holmes turned quite sharply and said: "That is not my job. My job is to play the game according to the rules." If the Court doesn't do justice, what …

The Impact Of Situational Constraints, Role Stressors, And Commitment On Employee Altruism, Steve M. Jex, Gary A. Adams, Daniel G. Bachrach, Sarah Sorenson Jul 2003

The Impact Of Situational Constraints, Role Stressors, And Commitment On Employee Altruism, Steve M. Jex, Gary A. Adams, Daniel G. Bachrach, Sarah Sorenson

Management Faculty Research and Publications

This study investigated relations between 3 work-related stressors (role ambiguity, role conflict, and organizational constraints) and altruistic behavior in the workplace. It was predicted that each stressor would be negatively related to altruism and that these relations would be moderated by affective commitment (AC). Data from 144 incumbent-supervisor dyads revealed that all 3 stressors; were weakly and negatively related to altruism. Two of these relationships were moderated by AC, although not as predicted. Organizational constraints were positively related to altruism among those reporting high levels of AC but negatively related among those reporting low levels of AC. The pattern was …

Investigating The Integration Of Acquired Firms In High-Technology Industries: Implications For Industrial Policy, David R. King, John D. Driessnack Jul 2003

Investigating The Integration Of Acquired Firms In High-Technology Industries: Implications For Industrial Policy, David R. King, John D. Driessnack

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Acquisition activity persists despite evidence that acquisitions do not improve firm performance. Further, government policy toward the defense industry has advocated consolidation in the name of nominal cost savings. We explore the role acquisitions play toward technology transfer and begin to identify factors associated with acquisition success through a review of existing research on post-acquisition performance that primarily considers acquiring firm stock performance. Using this research as a foundation, we build a model to analyze post-acquisition performance using a sample of high-technology firms. Results suggest critical success factors associated with post-acquisition stock performance are poorly understood. We conclude that proactive …

Employee Perceptions Of Task And Work Posture Frequency In An Office Environment: The Accuracy Of Self Report, Kevin Ii Meredith

Theses

The growth and expansion of the computers in the workplace have changed the way that people do work. In effort to minimize the number of work related musculoskeletal disorders, employee exposure to ergonomic risk factors has been number of assessment methods exist for collecting information regarding exposure to ergonomic risk factors in occupational settings. Establishing the validity of such methods is key to developing a greater understanding of the dose response relationship associated with ergonomic risk factors in the workplace. This research utilized work sampling techniques to determine the accuracy with which workers estimated task and work posture duration in …

Adolescent Violence Prevention: A Case Presentation, Hatim A. Omar, Joan Griffith Jul 2003

Adolescent Violence Prevention: A Case Presentation, Hatim A. Omar, Joan Griffith

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Violence in adolescence has seen an increase since the 1990s with dramatic statistics on violent death and risk behaviors. School violence has been focused upon by a huge media coverage of especially violent cases that could have had some endemic consequences worldwide. We present a case of a 14 year old white male with change in school behavior, strategies for the case investigation, its results, and long term prevention. Other research has shown that preventive measures during pregnancy, infancy and childhood can prevent adolescent and adult delinquency.

Why Won't Someone Help Me? The Unspeakable Epidemic Of Domestic Violence: An Annotated Bibliography, Therese A. Clark Arado Jul 2003

Why Won't Someone Help Me? The Unspeakable Epidemic Of Domestic Violence: An Annotated Bibliography, Therese A. Clark Arado

Northern Illinois University Law Review

When I began working on this bibliography, I did not know what to expect. It was a new endeavor for me. An annotated bibliography on domestic violence seemed so straightforward. I soon learned just how mistaken I was in that belief. I have learned a great deal in this journey and during it have counted my blessings over and over again. Domestic violence is a legal issue, a social issue, an employment issue, and an international issue. It is an issue for the young, for the elderly, for lesbians, gay men and transgendered persons. It touches legal and illegal immigrants, …

The Electronic Polis: Media Democracy And The Invasion Of Iraq, Jeff Lewis, Kirsty Best Jul 2003

The Electronic Polis: Media Democracy And The Invasion Of Iraq, Jeff Lewis, Kirsty Best

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The American-led victory in Baghdad was announced to the world with scenes of Iraqi citizens dragging down the statues of the deposed tyrant. Like the spectacle of World Cup Soccer or the Olympic Games, the image was transmitted live through the global media network to the billions of people who had been closely watching the three week invasion. President Bush shared in the celebration, announcing the dawn of a new age for freedom and democracy in the Middle East. This new democracy, the president proclaimed, would bring stability and prosperity to the region through the obliteration of terrorism …

Homeland (In)Security : Roots And Displacement, From New York, To Toronto, To Salt Lake City, Marusya Bociurkiw

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

On September 11, 2001, broadcast and print media around the world narrated the destruction of New York City's World Trade Center and the deaths of thousands of its occupants. This paper will examine the ways in which television and its appendages (the telephone, the internet, the newspaper) operated to organize the discursive meanings of this traumatic event. I will propose that between September 11 and February 2002's Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, ideas about home, roots and rootedness (and their Others: foreignness, homelessness, nomadicism) operated as a discursive mapping of that which could otherwise not be …

The State Of American Federalism, 2002–2003: Division Replaces Unity, Dale Krane Jul 2003

The State Of American Federalism, 2002–2003: Division Replaces Unity, Dale Krane

Public Administration Faculty Publications

The national unity formed last year in response to terrorism soon vanished as more typical political infighting returned. Although overshadowed by the buildup to and the conduct of a second war against Iraq, political issues grounded in the nation's federal character contributed to a rise in divisiveness. The mid-term elections of 2002 and redistricting battles in several states drove partisanship to new heights. The continued sluggishness of the nation's economy also exacerbated interparty bickering. Republicans controlled the White House and both houses of Congress, yet some of the president's policy initiatives encountered more serious resistance in his own party than …
