The Role Of Indigenous Parataxonomists In Botanical Inventory: From Herbarium Amboinense To Herbarium Floresense, Jeanine Pfeiffer, Yeremias Uril Jul 2003

The Role Of Indigenous Parataxonomists In Botanical Inventory: From Herbarium Amboinense To Herbarium Floresense, Jeanine Pfeiffer, Yeremias Uril

Faculty Publications, Environmental Studies

The enormous taxonomic scope of the Flora Malesiana Project is exacerbated by the extremely short supply of trained researchers and taxonomic experts available to undertake this task. The vast number of indigenous botanical experts resident in Malesia represents a potentially valuable, yet largely unrecognised and untapped, resource. By engaging in collaborative research with indigenous parataxonomists, Flora Malesiana researchers can develop field methodologies that enable a more comprehensive and accurate assessment of the botanical resources of the region while simultaneously enrolling local communities in the sustainable, long-term conservation of native biocultural diversity. This paper outlines a number of projects involving indigenous …

The Epidemiology Of U.S. Immunization Law: Mandated Coverage Of Immunizations Under State Health Insurance Laws, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Alexandra M. Stewart, Marisa A. Cox, Shawnte Mitchell Jul 2003

The Epidemiology Of U.S. Immunization Law: Mandated Coverage Of Immunizations Under State Health Insurance Laws, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Alexandra M. Stewart, Marisa A. Cox, Shawnte Mitchell

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Immunizations represent both basic clinical care as well as an essential public health activity with population-wide health implications, and for a number of reasons, the focus on national immunization policy has intensified in recent years. Insurers and employee health plans may cover immunization services as a matter of benefit design choice. Federal and state insurance laws also may mandate coverage of one or more classes of immunization services. For approximately 100 million persons who are members of state-regulated health insurance plans, state law plays a primary role in determining coverage. Thus the extent of state immunization health insurance mandates is …

Gum-Dipped: Reconstructing An Akron Neighborhood, Joyce Dyer Jul 2003

Gum-Dipped: Reconstructing An Akron Neighborhood, Joyce Dyer

University of Akron Press Publications

Gum-Dipped: A Daughter Remembers Rubber Town tells the story of growing up in the rubber community of Firestone Park in Akron, Ohio—the former Rubber Capital of the World. The book begins with the rededication of the bronze Harvey Firestone statue on August 3, 2000, at the Centennial celebration for the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company. The statue—perched high on a hill at the entrance to Firestone Park, the residential community Harvey built for his workers in 1915—was sacred to the author, Joyce Coyne Dyer, and her father, Tom Coyne, during the fifties, a time when the Coynes worshipped the company …

Welfare And Warfare: American Organized Labor Approaches The Military-Industrial Complex, 1949-1964, Edmund F. Wehrle

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Historians have been almost unanimous in condemning American organized labor's postwar relationship with the military-industrial complex.(1) Most follow Nelson Lichtenstein's assessment of a movement sacrificing militancy in favor of a junior partnership in a corporate state dominated by employers and the state. This capitulation legitimized managerial authority, validated a regressive economic system, and latched labor's wagon to a reactionary foreign policy and an emerging garrison state(2) This latter relationship, in particular, has galled critics of American organized labor. By the 1970s, they could assert, as did even "labor priest" Monsignor Charles Owen Rice, that labor had become a "lackey of …

Arsenic Concentrations In Private Bedrock Wells In Southeastern New Hampshire, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Epa New England), New Hampshire Department Of Environmental Services, New Hampshire Estuaries Project, Nh Department Of Health And Human Services

PREP Reports & Publications

The quality of drinking water obtained from private wells in New Hampshire is not regulated; consequently, private wells are often not sampled for arsenic unless individual well owners choose to do so. To provide private well owners and Federal and State environmental and health officials with accurate information on arsenic concentrations from private wells in this region, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) conducted an arsenic occurrence and distribution study, in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA New England), New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES), New Hampshire Estuaries Project, and with the New Hampshire Department of Health and …

Book Review: The Crowded Greenhouse: Population, Climate Change, And Creating A Sustainable World, Elizabeth L. Chalecki Jul 2003

Book Review: The Crowded Greenhouse: Population, Climate Change, And Creating A Sustainable World, Elizabeth L. Chalecki

Political Science Faculty Publications

Aimed at a lay reader, The Crowded Greenhouse is the collaborative effort of John Firor, director emeritus of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and his wife, population expert Judith Jacobsen. The first three chapters (written by Jacobsen) deal with population issues, and the second three chapters (written by Firor) assess climate change. This volume proceeds from the assumptions that the earth is finite, that human population cannot grow indefinitely, and that humans must act now to avoid negative environmental consequences from population growth.
