Letter From The Editor-In-Chief, Allan Young

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

With the present issue I've assumed the role of Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance and Business Ventures, with my colleagues at the School of Management, Syracuse University, David Wilemon and Chunchi Wu carrying on as Editors. In addition, Yochanan Shachmurove, who was instrumental in helping us put together our two previous issues, joins our Board of Editorial Advisors, as do William J. Baumol, and Lawrence R. Klein. Reflecting the diversity of the field itself, the present issue of the Journal is charactericized by many different concerns and approaches to the area of entrepreneurship. Accordingly, in the first article, …

Capital Budgeting And Entrepreneurial Organizations: A Survey Of Hospital Practices, Shih-Jen Kathy Ho, Lilian Chan, Daniel L. Tompkins

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Efficiency and effectiveness for all entrepreneurial firms requires that limited resources be put to their best use. Thus the acquisition of long-term assets is an important decision for any entrepreneurial firm. For hospitals, which have become entrepreneurial to survive in today’s health care environment, long-term asset investment decisions have become critical to their survival. The objective of this study is to increase health care organizations’ awareness of the important considerations in selecting and monitoring long-term investments. Our findings from a small sample of American hospitals indicate that payback method is the primary criterion for evaluating hospital’s long-term investment projects. Also …

The Relationship Of Health Beliefs And Health Value In Cardiovascular Outcomes, Kimberley Schaub

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite extensive theoretical information regarding Schwarzer's Health Action Process Approach the utility of the model pas yet to be explored within a chronic illness population. Using Schwarzer's Health Action Process Approach (Schwarzer, 1992), the purpose of this study was to investigate cardiovascular outcomes based on health beliefs and health value. Participants were eighty-one adults ages 42-87 with cardiovascular disease recruited from a cardiac rehabilitation program in Central Indiana. Participants completed instruments that assessed (a) health beliefs, (b) health value and, (c), quality of life. Measurements of physiological outcome (resting heart rate, distance walked, and metabolic equivalent) were also obtained. A …

New Studies Initiated By The U.S. Geological Survey: Effects Of Nutrient Enrichment On Stream Ecosystems, Mark D. Munn, Pixie A. Hamilton

United States Geological Survey: Publications

In 2001, the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program began an intensive study of nutrient enrichment—elevated concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus— in streams in five agricultural basins across the Nation (see map, p. 2). This study is providing nationally consistent and comparable data and analyses of nutrient conditions, including how these conditions vary as a result of natural and human-related factors, and how nutrient conditions affect algae and other biological communities. This information will benefit stakeholders, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and its partners, who are developing nutrient criteria to protect the aquatic health of streams …

Serotonergic Agents And Alcoholism Treatment: A Simulation, Scott F. Stoltenberg Dec 2003

Serotonergic Agents And Alcoholism Treatment: A Simulation, Scott F. Stoltenberg

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Background: Those with early-onset alcoholism may better respond to ondansetron (a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist) than to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) treatment, whereas those with late-onset alcoholism may present the reverse response pattern. Johnson and colleagues proposed a model that attempts to explain the observed treatment response patterns of those with early and late alcoholism onset by focusing on the influence of a common genetic variant in the serotonin transporter regulatory region (5-HTTLPR) on serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine (DA) system function.
Methods: The present study formalizes and extends Johnson’s descriptive model into a computer simulation consisting of differential equations. For …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increasing numbers of people worldwide are being diagnosed with Celiac Disease, an intestinal disorder caused by ingestion of foods containing gluten. Traditional baked goods are prepared using wheat flour that contains gluten. Literature suggests that the absorptive surface of the small intestine is damaged in people susceptible to gluten. Alternative gluten-free products are needed to improve the health of people with this disease. The purpose of this study was to assess the overall acceptability and palatability of chocolate brownies made with 100% banana flour or a blend of banana flour and potato starch. Appearance, color, texture, flavor and overall acceptability …

Determination Of The Optimal Form Of A Dna Vaccine To Induce An Effective Immune Response Against A Murine B-Cell Lymphoma, Deepti Aurora

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tumor vaccines are a promising alternative to chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer. To be effective and safe, a cancer vaccine should specifically target antigens expressed only on tumor cells. The B-cell tumor-derived Ig receptor may be considered a model tumor antigen for cancer vaccine development. Specifically the immunoglobulin idiotype (ld) encoded by the variable region genes (VH and VL) provides a target antigen. Promising results have been obtained in clinical studies of ld vaccination using ld proteins. However, ld protein is laborious and time-consuming to produce. Gene-based vaccines, on the other hand, are inexpensive and offer ease of manipulation …

Risk, Return And Degree Of Owner Involvement In Privately Held Firms, Edward Vos, Bronwyn M. Smith Dec 2003

Risk, Return And Degree Of Owner Involvement In Privately Held Firms, Edward Vos, Bronwyn M. Smith

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Financial theory states that the variability of an asset’s return should be explained by the relative riskiness of that asset (Sharpe, 1964). This concept has been built around, and applied to, publicly-listed companies for which market information (which forms the basis of the risk and return measures) is easily visible and obtainable. Unfortunately, the fact that such information is rarely (if ever) available for small businesses, severely limits the usefulness of such a theory for privately-held enterprises. Therefore by using data from 100 small businesses and three measures of risk, this study provides empirical evidence that for small businesses, there …

Characteristics Of Venture Capital Firms And Investment Appraisals: Australian Evidence, Alireza Tourani-Rad, Bryce England

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This study examines the characteristics of the venture capital industry in Australia. Our analysis is based on responses by thirty-two venture capitalist firms to a comprehensive questionnaire conducted in 2001. We observe that, on average, a venture capital firm has been operating for five years and consists of six investment executives with two specialist investment executives. Each firm has, on average, two formal layers in its investment decision-making process indicating two checkpoints to control risk. With respect to investment appraisal issues, it was noticed that the valuation methods based on discounted cash flows, recent transaction prices for acquisitions in the …

United States Public Health Resources

An in vitro assay to evaluate the bacteriolytic activity of the complement pathway was applied to 2 strains of Borrelia bissettii, CO501 and DN127, and compared with that of B. burgdorferi sensu stricto B31. Sera from mule deer ( Odocoileus hemionus) and the Western Fence lizard ( Sceloporus occidentalis) were completely borreliacidal for B. burgdorferi and for both strains of B. bissettii. Serum from Bobwhite quail ( Colinus virginianus) was nonlytic for B. burgdorferi and partially lytic for B. bissettii strains, CO-501 and DN127. Serum from a New Zealand White rabbit ( Oryctolagus cuniculus) …

Medicare+Choice In Palm Beach: Watching And Waiting?, Lauren Hersch Nicholas, Geraldine Dallek, Brian Biles

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Under the Medicare+Choice program, firms have been able to offer products on a county by county basis, making participation decisions based on factors such as county payment rate, strength of local provider networks, and beneficiary's affinity for managed care. In 2003, Medicare+Choice payment rates paid to plans range from $495 in rural floor counties to a high of $872 in Staten Island, NY. Consequently, there is large national variation in benefits, premiums, and plan participation. A recent site visit to Palm Beach county and neighboring Miami-Dade highlighted many of the differences between counties which may pose challenges to firms trying …

Determinants Of Satisfaction With An Automated Alcohol Evaluation Program., Daniel Z Lieberman Dec 2003

Determinants Of Satisfaction With An Automated Alcohol Evaluation Program., Daniel Z Lieberman

Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Faculty Publications

High rates of untreated mental illness cause serious health problems in the United States and worldwide. The use of computer-administered therapy has the potential to increase access to mental health care for certain patient populations. An online version of an alcohol check-up was developed that guided subjects through a series of standardized questionnaires, and provided them with feedback designed to enhance their appreciation of the negative aspects of their alcohol use. Ratings of the helpfulness of the questionnaires were evaluated in order to determine the characteristics of individuals who would potentially benefit from an automated substance abuse intervention, and to …
