Mothers’ Everyday Realities And Child Placement Experiences (Full Report), Nancy Colleen Freymond Aug 2003

Mothers’ Everyday Realities And Child Placement Experiences (Full Report), Nancy Colleen Freymond

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Placing a child in substitute care is one of the most challenging aspects of child welfare work. In situations of apprehension, child welfare workers may be required to make quick decisions about child placement sometimes with very limited information. This paper is based on interviews with mothers whose children were placed in substitute care. Mothers’ daily lives, including the nature of adversity in their lives, will be discussed. Mothers’ response to adversity and how they are impacted both positively and negatively by child welfare interventions will also be explored. Their experiences of placement reveals there is a disconnection between the …

The Effects Of Instruction And Strategy Implementation On Increasing Mathematics Computation Skills For Students With Learning Problems: A Meta-Analysis, Natalie Roehm Aug 2003

The Effects Of Instruction And Strategy Implementation On Increasing Mathematics Computation Skills For Students With Learning Problems: A Meta-Analysis, Natalie Roehm

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

It is well known by educators and researchers that students with a Specific Learning Disability (SLD) often do not make adequate progress when using traditional instructional methods (Whinnery & Stecker, 1992). Therefore, teachers must experiment with different techniques in order to help these students succeed. Many educational models and interventions have been introduced recently in an effort to help increase the level of math performance of at-risk and SLD students. The current metaanalysis study was conducted to determine the effects of instruction and strategy implementation on increasing mathematics and computation skills for students with learning problems and Specific Learning Disabilities. …

Knowledge Of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors And Perception Of Risk In Women, Kimberly Kuykendall-Marlar Aug 2003

Knowledge Of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors And Perception Of Risk In Women, Kimberly Kuykendall-Marlar

MSN Research Projects

More women than men are dying of cardiovascular disease. The misconception persists that heart disease is a "man's disease" and not an urgent health care issue for women. In the United States, heart disease kills more women than all cancers combined. In 1997, 228,679 women died due to cardiovascular disease, and 41,443 women died from breast cancer. Yet, women are still not assessed effectively for their risk factors for cardiovascular disease; therefore, women are under-diagnosed and under-treated for this disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate women's knowledge of cardiovascular disease risk factors, assess their perception of risk, …

The Decline Of Trust And Civic Engagement Since Alexis De Tocqueville's Democracy In America, Rebecca Jean Hannagan Aug 2003

The Decline Of Trust And Civic Engagement Since Alexis De Tocqueville's Democracy In America, Rebecca Jean Hannagan

Student Work

Since 1776 when the United States broke away from British colonial rule, Americans have considered themselves to be a profoundly free and equal people. When Alexis de Tocqueville toured the young nation in the 1830's he argued that a profusion of voluntary associations, egalitarian values, and a substantial and vibrant religious presence combined to make this fledgling country and unusually civic and participatory democracy. Despite our beginnings as a nation of joiners, Americans' engagement in political activity has fallen steadily. Voter turnout has been declining since the 1960's and polling data reflects a trend of distrust in government. As a …

Local Communities In Benin: Spatial Dynamics Before And After The Administrative And Territorial Reforms Of 1999, Andrea Ahouassa Aug 2003

Local Communities In Benin: Spatial Dynamics Before And After The Administrative And Territorial Reforms Of 1999, Andrea Ahouassa

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines decentralized local communities in Benin during the period of a single-party socialist government with a central plan economic system and during the period of a multiple-party capitalist democratic system. Since the country's independence from France in 1960, political leaders claimed to support and implement socioeconomic programs based upon a decentralized public administration system and a decentralized territorial system. For three decades, none of the various territorial administrations' reforms of the single party system achieved the planned goals. However, the change in party structure, government attitudes, and territorial administration reforms since 1990 has achieved the goals set at …

Bridging Or Maintaining Distance: A Matched Comparison Of Parent And Service Provider Realities (Full Report), Karen Frensch, Gary Cameron Aug 2003

Bridging Or Maintaining Distance: A Matched Comparison Of Parent And Service Provider Realities (Full Report), Karen Frensch, Gary Cameron

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

When service providers and parents engage with each other to improve family circumstances, do they have similar impressions of what is important and what is helpful? Our purpose in interviewing parents who have been involved in child protection services and their service providers was to understand how parents and service providers view each other, their interactions, and the services they are engaged in. We were also interested in the “official record”—the files that describe parents, children, their needs, and the services provided in response. A comparison of the perspectives of service providers, parents, and files highlights some of the barriers …

Invisible Lives: The Experiences Of Parents Receiving Child Protective Services (Full Report), Sarah Maiter, Sally Palmer, Shehenaz Manji Aug 2003

Invisible Lives: The Experiences Of Parents Receiving Child Protective Services (Full Report), Sarah Maiter, Sally Palmer, Shehenaz Manji

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

Involvement with child protective services (CPS) may be expected to be a stressful experience for parents. Usually their involvement is involuntary, initiated because someone believes they are not caring adequately for their children: this tells them that the community, or someone in the community, does not approve of them as parents. As families who become involved with CPS tend to be economically deprived and socially marginalized, they may view agency intervention as one more sign that they are not accepted by their community. Moreover it brings the fear of losing their children, perhaps forever. In this context, it is especially …

Theory-Driven Evaluation In Action: Lessons From A $20 Million Statewide Work And Health Initiative, Stewart I. Donaldson, Laura E. Gooler Aug 2003

Theory-Driven Evaluation In Action: Lessons From A $20 Million Statewide Work And Health Initiative, Stewart I. Donaldson, Laura E. Gooler

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Despite the burgeoning literature explicating the benefits of theory-driven program development and evaluation, there remains a strong need for practical advice, written insights and experiences, and examples from evaluation practice illustrating how to implement this approach. The purpose of this paper is to move the field closer to a concrete understanding of the strengths, limitations, and challenges of implementing theory-driven program development and evaluation in modern human service organizations. This is accomplished by describing the evaluation process, resulting program theories, and lessons learned from the evaluation a five year, $20 million statewide Work and Health Initiative.

Hierarchic Approach To Mine Action In Croatia, Nenad Mladineo, Snjezana Knezic, Damir Gorseta Aug 2003

Hierarchic Approach To Mine Action In Croatia, Nenad Mladineo, Snjezana Knezic, Damir Gorseta

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The Republic of Croatia is one of the 10 most mine-contaminated countries in the world. There are almost 750,000 mines on 1,630 sq km of mine-suspected areas. About 170 sq km are actual minefields, while the rest of the area is contaminated with individual explosive ordnance. Mine-affected areas that have not been used for years, pose a huge economic problem and obstruct infrastructure development, reconstruction, and return of displaced persons to their normal lives. They also pose a significant safety problem. In particular, any activities carried out in mine-contaminated areas significantly threaten human lives and material assets. It is estimated …

Mine Free Planet: A Sri Lankan Vision, Michael Pickering

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

One organisation is determined to make a difference in the lives of thousands living in mine-affected areas of Sri Lanka. Conservative estimates reveal the humanitarian demining work to be carried out in Sri Lanka will take between 10 and 15 years. Although an official figure is yet to be confirmed, a recent report suggests an estimated 900,000 mines have been laid in Jaffna and Killinochchi districts alone. This does not include UXO and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Draft Plan Of Management For The Proposed Point Quobba Fish Habitat Protection Area., Department Of Fisheries

Fisheries Management Papers

Point Quobba is a popular site for locals and tourists for beach activities, fishing and snorkelling, and as a place for children to learn to swim and gain an awareness of the marine environment. The marine life and habitats of the area are of considerable scientific and recreational interest and are highly valued in the local community. However, they are at risk from their high level of use and from conflict between users due to their proximity to popular tourism, boat ramp, camping and settlement areas on-shore.

The Effect Of Task Versus Ego Oriented Feedback On Exercise Enjoyment, Marc Fields Aug 2003

The Effect Of Task Versus Ego Oriented Feedback On Exercise Enjoyment, Marc Fields

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Intrinsic motivation has been shown to be a very important factor in exercise adherence. Research has found that factors such as exercise intensity, social feedback, goal orientation and perceived climate can affect intrinsic motivation. The purpose of this study was to assess situational goal orientation, specifically whether individuals in a task induced condition or ego induced condition would report different levels of intrinsic motivation (i.e., enjoyment, tension, effort and competence during exercise). Participants (N= 114) rode on an exercise bike for 24 minutes at a moderate intensity. A MANCOVA factorial design was used to examine differences in intrinsic motivation. The …

Effects Of Perceived Costs And Rewards On Motivation And Retention Of Rape Crisis Center Volunteers, Amanda Grissom Aug 2003

Effects Of Perceived Costs And Rewards On Motivation And Retention Of Rape Crisis Center Volunteers, Amanda Grissom

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to obtain information that may assist Rape Crisis Center (RCC) volunteer coordinators and executive directors in the recruitment and retention of volunteers. The major hypotheses guiding this study are as follows: (a) the reasons that initially motivated volunteers to volunteer at the RCC will be the same as their reasons for why they are continuing to volunteer at the RCC and (b) volunteers at RCCs continue to volunteer because the perceived costs of volunteering do not exceed the perceived rewards of volunteering. Using a modified version of Black's (1989) questionnaire, respondents were asked to …

A Structural Linkage Between The Dimerization And Encapsidation Signals In Hiv-2 Leader Rna, J. M. Lanchy, J. D. Ivanovitch, J. Stephen Lodmell Aug 2003

A Structural Linkage Between The Dimerization And Encapsidation Signals In Hiv-2 Leader Rna, J. M. Lanchy, J. D. Ivanovitch, J. Stephen Lodmell

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The 5' untranslated leader region of retroviral RNAs contains noncoding information that is essential for viral replication, including signals for transcriptional transactivation, splicing, primer binding for reverse transcription, dimerization of the genomic RNA, and encapsidation of the viral RNA into virions. These RNA motifs have considerable structural and functional overlap. in this study, we investigate the conformational dynamics associated with the use and silencing of a sequence in HIV-2 RNA that is involved in genomic RNA dimerization called stem-loop 1 (SL1) and its relationship with a flanking sequence that is known to be important for encapsidation of viral RNAs. We …

River Flows And Water Wars: Emerging Science For Environmental Decision Making, N. Leroy Poff, J. David Allan, Margaret A. Palmer, David D. Hart, Brian D. Richter, Angela H. Arthington, Kevin H. Rogers, Judy L. Meyer, Jack Arthur Stanford Aug 2003

River Flows And Water Wars: Emerging Science For Environmental Decision Making, N. Leroy Poff, J. David Allan, Margaret A. Palmer, David D. Hart, Brian D. Richter, Angela H. Arthington, Kevin H. Rogers, Judy L. Meyer, Jack Arthur Stanford

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Real and apparent conflicts between ecosystem and human needs for fresh water are contributing to the emergence of an alternative model for conducting river science around the world. The core of this new paradigm emphasizes the need to forge new partnerships between scientists and other stakeholders where shared ecological goals and river visions are developed, and the need for new experimental approaches to advance scientific understanding at the scales relevant to whole-river management. We identify four key elements required to make this model succeed: existing and planned water projects represent opportunities to conduct ecosystem-scale experiments through controlled river flow manipulations; …
