The Culture Of Race, Class, And Poverty: The Emergence Of A Cultural Discourse In Early Cold War Social Work (1946-1963), Laura Curran
The Culture Of Race, Class, And Poverty: The Emergence Of A Cultural Discourse In Early Cold War Social Work (1946-1963), Laura Curran
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Through a primary source historical analysis, this article discusses the emergence of a cultural discourse in the early cold war (1946-1963) social work literature. It traces the evolution of social work's cultural narrative in relation to social scientific perspectives, changing race relations, and increasing welfare caseloads. Social work scholars originally employed their cultural discourse to account for racial and ethnic difference and eventually came to examine class and poverty from this viewpoint as well. This cultural framework wrestled with internal contradictions. It simultaneously celebrated and problematized cultural difference and foreshadowed both latter twentieth century multiculturalism as well as neo-conservative thought.

Crimes And Offenses Offenses Against Public Health And Morals: Change Certain Provisions Relating To Sexual Offenses, Pimping, And Sexual Battery; Include Depiction Of Any Portion Of A Minor's Body Part In The Prohibition Against Sexual Exploitation Of Children, Thomas Mihill
Georgia State University Law Review
The Act criminalizes transporting a person for the purpose of prostitution. It raises the punishment for sexual battery against a child under the age of 16 from a misdemeanor to a felony. It adds language criminalizing the depiction of a minor's body part engaged in any sexually explicit conduct. Finally, the Act substantially amends the Code language relating to computer pornography, obscene Internet contact with a child, and child exploitation prevention.

Immortalized Epithelial Cells From Human Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Cysts, Mahmoud Loghman-Adham, Surya M. Nauli, Carlos E. Soto, Barbara Kariuki, Jing Zhou
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the result of mutations in one allele of the PKD1 or PKD2 genes, followed by "second hit" somatic mutations of the other allele in renal tubule cells. Continued proliferation of clonal cells originating from different nephron segments leads to cyst formation. In vitro studies of the mechanisms of cyst formation have been hampered by the scarcity of nephrectomy specimens and the limited life span of cyst-derived cells in primary culture. We describe the development of a series of immortalized epithelial cell lines from over 30 individual renal cysts obtained from 11 patients with …

About five years ago, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) began to be detected in drinking water sources. Typically an oxidative degradation product of unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine, NDMA is a component of rocket fuel and is also formed during numerous industrial manufacturing processes as a byproduct of reactions involving chemicals called alkylamines. The US Environmental Protection Agency has identified NDMA as a probable human carcinogen. However, because NDMA had not historically been considered a common drinking water contaminant, no federal or state drinking water standards were established for it until 1998 in California. In addition to its presence in drinking water, it has recently been …

Self-Monitoring And Consumer Behavior, Sue-Ellen Kjeldal
Self-Monitoring And Consumer Behavior, Sue-Ellen Kjeldal
The Qualitative Report
In the present research, the relationship between the psychological construct of self-monitoring (Snyder, 1974) and consumer behavior is investigated. The word association study undertaken for the present paper was deliberately unstructured. This type of methodology provides respondents with a context free environment in which contents of fruit and vegetable knowledge structures can be elicited. This is the first such study that examines self-monitoring in a free-recall situation, and the results are instructive in providing more information on the specific nature of self-monitoring effects. Furthermore, the results of this study demonstrate a relationship between two sub-disciplines of psychology, namely self-monitoring (Snyder, …
