Managers' Occupational Stress In China : The Role Of Self-Efficacy, Changqin Lu, Oi Ling Siu, Cary L. Cooper Sep 2003

Managers' Occupational Stress In China : The Role Of Self-Efficacy, Changqin Lu, Oi Ling Siu, Cary L. Cooper

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

The role of self-efficacy, an individual difference variable, in occupational stress research is seldom discussed, and is even rarely examined in Chinese societies. This study investigates the relationships between stressors, managerial self-efficacy (MSE) and work-related strains (job satisfaction, physical strain, and psychological strain). A total of 450 enterprise managers in eight cities of the People's Republic of China completed a battery of structured questionnaires. The results of the study generally support that total stressors was negatively related to job satisfaction, physical strain, and psychological strain. Furthermore, MSE was statistically significantly related to strains in that respondents with high levels of …

Mentoring As A Precursor To Incorporation: An Assessment Of The Mentoring Experience Of Recently Minted Ph.D.S, Regina Dixon-Reeves Sep 2003

Mentoring As A Precursor To Incorporation: An Assessment Of The Mentoring Experience Of Recently Minted Ph.D.S, Regina Dixon-Reeves

Center for Cultural Development: Staff Scholarship

Consistently, the academic and anecdotal research on mentoring has demonstrated that it is important in enhancing opportunities for success and achievement. Whereas many would agree that mentoring is important for females and scholars of color, there is very little research to confirm this conventional wisdom. In an effort to fill the gap of knowledge about how mentoring affects the success of African American junior faculty, this article explores the mentoring experiences of recently graduated, African American doctorates (Ph.D.s) in the field of sociology. This research demonstrates how mentoring can enhance the opportunities of faculty of color and facilitate advancement through …

The Effects Of Sexual Orientation On Hirability Ratings: An Experimental Study, Greet Van Hoye, Filip Lievens Sep 2003

The Effects Of Sexual Orientation On Hirability Ratings: An Experimental Study, Greet Van Hoye, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Despite its rising importance, empirical research about sexual orientation in the workplace is still scarce. This experimental study examined if gay candidates, with the same work-related qualities as heterosexual candidates, would be judged less favorably in a personnel selection context. Written candidate profiles were varied in a 3 x 3 between-subjects factorial design, with candidate quality and sexual orientation as experimental variables. Our results indicated that the hirability ratings of 135 selection professionals were based on candidate quality and that no discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation occurred. Implications of these findings and directions for future research are discussed.

Jurisdictional Wrangling: Us Military Troops Overseas And The Death Penalty, Alyssa K. Dragnich Sep 2003

Jurisdictional Wrangling: Us Military Troops Overseas And The Death Penalty, Alyssa K. Dragnich

Chicago Journal of International Law

The current deployments of military forces to Iraq and Afghanistan have caught the attention of the American public, but many Americans forget that large numbers of their fellow citizens are also stationed elsewhere around the world, serving in uniform. These servicemembers had been stationed overseas before Operation IRAQI FREEDOM began, and they will remain there long after that conflict has ended. These men and women face special circumstances: they are US citizens, subject to the laws of the United States and the US military. But at the same time, they are living in another country and are also subject to …
