Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Several physiological adaptations occur in the respiratory muscles in rodent models of elastase-induced emphysema. Although the contractile properties of the diaphragm are altered in a way that suggests expression of slower isoforms of myosin heavy chain (MHC), it has been difficult to demonstrate a shift in MHCs in an animal model that corresponds to the shift toward slower MHCs seen in human emphysema. METHODS: We sought to identify MHC and corresponding physiological changes in the diaphragms of rats with elastase-induced emphysema. Nine rats with emphysema and 11 control rats were studied 10 months after instillation with elastase. MHC isoform …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
The p21-activated kinases Ste20p and Cla4p carry out undefined functions that are essential for viability during budding in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. To gain insight into the roles of Ste20p, we have used a synthetic lethal mutant screen to identify additional genes that are required in the absence of Cla4p. Altogether, we identified 65 genes, including genes with roles in cell polarity, mitosis, and cell wall maintenance. Herein, we focus on a set that defines a function carried out by Bni1p and several of its interacting proteins. We found that Bni1p and a group of proteins that complex with Bni1p (Bud6p, Spa2p, …
The Cardiotoxicity Of Carbon Monoxide, Ashvin P. Patel
The Cardiotoxicity Of Carbon Monoxide, Ashvin P. Patel
Peninsula Medical School Theses
The mechanism(s) responsible for the cardiotoxicity of CO are not clear and do not appear to arise solely from tissue hypoxia. Tissue hypoxia is produced by CO binding to haemoglobin and reducing the amount of oxygen carried by the blood in vivo. CO-induced hypoxia in vivo may be responsible for producing conditions such as those found during ischaemia/reperfusion (l/R) injury. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced during l/R injury is established and responsible for cellular/tissue damage from the oxidative damage. We postulate that oxidative stress is responsible for the CO-associated cardiac morbidities found in some cases following severe acute exposure to …
Risk Factors Associated With The Mucociliary Apparatus In Intensive Care Patients, Ross James Kay
Risk Factors Associated With The Mucociliary Apparatus In Intensive Care Patients, Ross James Kay
Peninsula Medical School Theses
Initially, there were two principal aims of this investigation. A laboratory based project studying the effect of elevated fraction of inspired oxygen on the ciliary coverage of rat trachea in culture and a clinically based investigation of the ciliary coverage and frequency of ciliary ultrastructural abnormalities in the bronchus of intensive care unit patients. The mucociliary apparatus is the main airway defence mechanism protecting the lungs from respiratory infections. It is vital in intubated patients, as they lack the back up clearance mechanism normally provided by the cough reflex. Ciliary coverage and ultrastructural integrity are two key components of effective …
Toward Validation Of The Sports Behavior Checklist: A Comparison Of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And Control Group Children In A Sports Environment, Aaron Clendenin
LSU Master's Theses
Data from participants (N = 124) was entered into a principal components analysis to test the factor structure of the Sports Behavior Checklist ([SBC] Johnson & Rosen, 2000). The subscales of the SBC were correlated with relevant subscales of the Conners'- Revised Parent Form ( Conners, 1997) and Social Skills Rating System (Gresham & Elliott, 1990). Both of these analyses were conducted to determine the construct validity of the instrument. Additionally, a subsample (N = 92) of low socioeconomic status individuals was used to compare groups of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (n = 49) and non-clinical (n = 43) children on the …
Teenage Immigrant, Anne Ipsen
Teenage Immigrant, Anne Ipsen
The Bridge
The poem by Emma Lazarus on the Statue of Liberty defines the classical model of immigrants fleeing from poverty, oppression, or persecution. They are refugees, forced by intolerable circumstances to move from their homeland. Less stereotypic is the highly skilled or educated individual who makes a positive choice towards better opportunity. These immigrants tend to come as individuals or as a nuclear family and are less likely to live in or identify with an ethnic group. They assimilate more readily, especially if they have some English before arrival, while keeping closer ties with relatives and making more frequent trips to …
Iddq Testing Of A Cmos 10-Bit Charge Scaling Digital-To-Analog Converter, Srinivas Rao Aluri
Iddq Testing Of A Cmos 10-Bit Charge Scaling Digital-To-Analog Converter, Srinivas Rao Aluri
LSU Master's Theses
This work presents an effective built-in current sensor (BICS), which has a very small impact on the performance of the circuit under test (CUT). The proposed BICS works in two-modes the normal mode and the test mode. In the normal mode the BICS is isolated from the CUT due to which there is no performance degradation of the CUT. In the testing mode, our BICS detects the abnormal current caused by permanent manufacturing defects. Further more our BICS can also distinguish the type of defect induced (Gate-source short, source-drain short and drain-gate short). Our BICS requires neither an external voltage …

The Role Of Temporary Agency Employment In Tight Labor Markets, Susan N. Houseman, Arne L. Kalleberg, George A. Erickcek
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This paper examines the reasons why employers used and even increased their use of temporary help agencies during the tight labor markets of the 1990s. Based on case study evidence from the hospital and auto supply industries, we evaluate various hypotheses for this phenomenon. In high-skilled occupations, our results are consistent with the view that employers paid substantially more to agency help to avoid raising wages for their regular workers and to fill vacancies while they recruited workers for permanent positions. In low-skilled occupations, our evidence suggests that temporary help agencies facilitated the use of more "risky" workers by lowering …

Antibodies Against Affinity-Purified, Surface-Exposed Outer Membrane Proteins Of Edwardsiella Ictaluri Block Invasion Into Fathead Minnow Epithelial Cells, Ramona T. Skirpstunas, Thomas J. Baldwin
Animal, Dairy, and Veterinary Science Faculty Publications
Surface-exposed outer membrane proteins (OMPs) of Edwardsiella ictaluri were isolated by selective solubilization of inner membrane proteins from total membrane preparations. Purification of biotin-labeled, insoluble, surface-exposed proteins using streptavidin columns was performed, and single-dimension sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS–PAGE) showed four major OMPs, with apparent molecular weights of 22, 31, 59, and 72 kilodaltons (kDa). Purified surface-exposed proteins corresponded to proteins isolated from total outer membrane preparations resolved by SDS–PAGE, showing that surface-exposed proteins are within the outer membrane fraction and can be successfully isolated using affinity purification. Polyclonal antiserum against these surface-exposed OMPs was produced in New Zealand …

To Denmark And Back An Excerpt From The Unpublished Memoirs Of John M. Jensen, Frederik V. Jensen, Peter L. Petersen
The Bridge
The "most influential individual in the United Evangelical Lutheran Church's final twenty-five years" is how synod President William Larsen once described John M. Jensen1, longtime editor of The Ansgar Lutheran, the church's English language periodical. Jensen served the UELC as pastor, translator, historian, and representative, but it was through the pages of The Ansgar Lutheran that he had his greatest impact. Week after week for nearly twenty-five years, he wrote about spiritual matters, church policies and politics, questions of social justice, and events throughout the world, all the while serving full time as a church pastor. During World War II …

The Effect Of Thyroidectomy On Sexual Cycle And Pregnancy Rates In Rats, Ali̇ Ri̇şvanli, Muhterem Aydin, Erdal Kaygusuzoğlu, Hüseyi̇n Ti̇murkan
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
We investigated the effect of hypothyroidism caused by thyroidectomy on the sexual cycle and pregnancy rates in rats. Twenty female rats were divided into two groups. The thyroid glands were totally extirpated in the first group (n = 10). An operation was performed but the thyroid glands were not extirpated in the second group (n = 10). In both groups, the differences in vaginal cytology were examined daily with vaginal irrigation, for 1 month starting 3 days after the operation. Preparations from the vaginal irrigation were stained with Giemsa. A male rat was placed in the cage containing the female …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, the effect of vitamin E usage (75 days, 45 mg/day of vitamin E (DL-\alpha tocopheryl acetate)) on the myofibrillar proteins in male Morkaraman lamb meat was investigated. SDS-PAGE gels indicated that vitamin E supplementation to the diet did not have any effect on actin and myosin; however it had a fractional effect on tropomyosin. For pH values, no differences were observed between the control and vitamin E supplemented groups.

Evaluation Of Three Different Vaccination Regimes Against Newcastle Disease In Central Anatolia, Osman Ergani̇ş, Uçkun Sai̇t Uçan
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A change in the vaccination strategy used in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey to combat the effects of infections with endemic virulent Newcastle disease virus (NDV) in maternally immune birds is described in this retrospective work. A novel vaccination schedule was applied to approximately 2,230,000 chickens from different breeds. The alterations were based on the use of an inactivated NDV + infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) and the application of aerosol vaccines with different timings compared to traditional programmes. In a district in which Newcastle disease (ND) epidemics had been occurring, a satisfactory humoral protection (mHI titre >log 2^7) …

ABSTRACT: Within the framework of the APHEA2 (Air Pollution on Health: a European Approach) project, the effects of ambient particles on mortality among persons o65 yrs were investigated. Daily measurements for particles with a 50% cut-off aerodynamic diameter of 10 mm (PM10) and black smoke (BS), as well as the daily number of deaths among persons o65 yrs of age, from 29 European cities, have been collected. Data on other pollutants and meteorological variables, to adjust for confounding effects and data on city characteristics, to investigate potential effect modification, were also recorded. For individual city analysis, generalised additive models extending …

Dynamical Evolutionary Psychology: Individual Decision Rules And Emergent Social Norms, Douglas T. Kenrick, Norman P. Li, Jonathan Butner
Dynamical Evolutionary Psychology: Individual Decision Rules And Emergent Social Norms, Douglas T. Kenrick, Norman P. Li, Jonathan Butner
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
A new theory integrating evolutionary and dynamical approaches is proposed. Following evolutionary models, psychological mechanisms are conceived as conditional decision rules designed to address fundamental problems confronted by human ancestors, with qualitatively different decision rules serving different problem domains and individual differences in decision rules as a function of adaptive and random variation. Following dynamical models, decision mechanisms within individuals are assumed to unfold in dynamic interplay with decision mechanisms of others in social networks. Decision mechanisms in different domains have different dynamic outcomes and lead to different sociospatial geometries. Three series of simulations examining trade-offs in cooperation and mating …
The ‘Blaine’ Debate: Must States Fund Religious Schools?, Laura S. Underkuffler
The ‘Blaine’ Debate: Must States Fund Religious Schools?, Laura S. Underkuffler
Faculty Scholarship
It is my view that efforts to force states to fund religious schools through voucher plans or otherwise will and should fail. My reasons for this conclusion are two-fold. First, there is no viable federal constitutional argument that states are required to fund religious institutions, including religious schools. Second, there are excellent reasons why the funding of religious institutions is very bad and dangerous policyââ¬âreasons which states are free to use as the groundings for their own policies, and which the decision in Zelman has left untouched.

Family Research Council And Roe V. Wade, Gerard V. Bradley
Journal Articles
Thirty years ago in Roe v. Wade the Supreme Court launched what it hoped would be a cultural revolution. Here are the inaugural words: "The right of privacy...is broad enough to encompass a woman's decision whether or not to terminate a pregnancy".
The revolution has progressed rapidly. The counter-strategies tried so far have been ineffective: we are no closer to overruling Roe than in 1973; the abortion liberty occupies an organizing place in our culture and politics; the number of abortions annually has remained remarkably steady over three decades.

Objective: To address the mental health needs of youths who are arrest- ed and detained in Illinois, an initiative was designed and implemented that identified youths with psychotic or affective disorders, linked them to community services, and monitored their cases. This study assessed whether such linkage is possible and whether it improves clinical and forensic outcomes. Methods: Under the initiative, court staff refer youths who may have a mental illness to a clinical liaison. If the youth is eligible for the program, the liaison works with the family to develop a community-based action plan. For the analysis presented here, the …

Is the nature of the international legal system changing? Do we see developments in international relations that challenge the core concepts of international law, rendering the law dys-or non-functional. Professor Karl Zemanek sees indicators of just such change. He writes to arouse our attention to the dangers, urging us to act before it is too late. Professor Zemanek sees the United States tending toward hegemony or even imperialism and argues that these tendencies are already changing international law. I share his concerns for the ultimate health of international law, but urge a broader look at the dangers. Focus should be …

Lawyers And Biblical Prophets, Thomas L. Shaffer
Lawyers And Biblical Prophets, Thomas L. Shaffer
Journal Articles
This is part of a broader exploration of the suggestion that the biblical prophets-Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Amos, Nathan, and the others-are sources of ethical reflection and moral example for modern American lawyers. The suggestion appears to be unusual; I am not sure why.
The Prophets were, more than anything else, lawyers-as their successors, the Rabbis of the Talmud, were. They were neither teachers nor bureaucrats, not elected officials or priests or preachers. And the comparison is not an ancient curiosity:
Much of what admirable lawyer-heroes have done in modern America has been prophetic in the biblical sense-that is, what they …
The Lame Ducks Of Marbury, John Copeland Nagle
The Lame Ducks Of Marbury, John Copeland Nagle
Journal Articles
The election of 1800 was one of the most contested - and important - in American history. After it became clear that neither President John Adams nor a Federalist majority in Congress had been reelected, they acted during the lame-duck period to preserve their influences far into the future. They did so by appointing John Marshall as Chief Justice, ratifying the Treaty with France, creating numerous new federal judicial positions, and filling many of those positions with friends, family, and Federalists (including William Marbury). Not surprisingly, Jefferson and his supporters protested these actions as contrary to the will of the …
