Spectral Analysis Of Hybrid Bermudagrass Placed Under Various Combinations Of Nitrogen And Water Availability, Malika Baghzouz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Remote sensing technology that uses a movable ground-based system has promise for rapid, accurate and objective evaluation of turfgrass quality for instantaneous nitrogen and water application correction. Such a test has been made on hybrid bermudagrass 'Tifway' [ Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy] through a 2-year field study at the Center for Urban Water Conservation in the city of North Las Vegas. Ten combinations of water and nitrogen treatments including cyclic and steady conditions were imposed on twenty experimental plots, with two replications per treatment. Treatments consisted of five N treatments: High Steady Nitrogen (HSN), Low Steady …

Measurement Of Inorganic Arsenic And Chromium Species In Southern Nevada Groundwater Using Ion Chromatography-Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, Julie A Bertoia

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Two analytical methods employing an ion chromatograph-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer were used to separate inorganic arsenite from arsenate and trivalent from hexavalent chromium in southern Nevada groundwater. Method detection limits were found to be 0.011 ppb and 0.005 ppb for arsenite and arsenate respectively, and 0.015 ppb and 0.02 ppb for trivalent and hexavalent chromium respectively. Following an investigation of the stability of the oxidation states of arsenic and chromium in aqueous solution with time, the following procedures were adopted. Samples collected in the field for arsenic were filtered, stored at 4°C, and analyzed within 7 days; and those …

Power, Legitimation, And Drawing Distinctions: Rendering Of 'Public' And 'Private' In United States Domestic Violence Policymaking, Christina R Drum Jan 2003

Power, Legitimation, And Drawing Distinctions: Rendering Of 'Public' And 'Private' In United States Domestic Violence Policymaking, Christina R Drum

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Contested claims about the public/private distinction have always been central to liberal democratic principles, to feminist ideologies, and (more narrowly) to domestic violence policymaKing Historically, treatment of domestic violence as a phenomenon that is relegated to the so-called 'private sphere' has served as justification for limiting such public policy remedies as prevention, intervention and recovery initiatives; From the grassroots battered women's movements of the 1970s to the current network of shelters, community agencies and advocacy groups, the last several decades have seen significant progress toward increasing public and political awareness of domestic violence. In the United States, many of these …

The Effects Of Environmentally Relevant Doses Of Perchlorate (Clo(4)(-)) On Rana Pipiens Metamorphosis And Development, Andrea N Golli Jan 2003

The Effects Of Environmentally Relevant Doses Of Perchlorate (Clo(4)(-)) On Rana Pipiens Metamorphosis And Development, Andrea N Golli

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Perchlorate not only blocks the body's ability to incorporate iodine into T3 and T4 hormones through the sodium iodine symporter system, but also depletes the thyroid glands' internal stores of iodine. Many of the steps that regulate metamorphosis in amphibians are also triggered by thyroid hormones therefore we investigated the ability of perchlorate to interfere with the development and metamorphosis of Rana pipiens . Aquaria containing concentrations of 40 ppb, 400 ppb, and 4000 ppb perchlorate with a 0 ppb perchlorate control as well as a magnesium control (since magnesium perchlorate was used) to evaluate the growth and development of …

The Psychological Impact Of Carrier Status In Hereditary Disorders, Jane Elizabeth Karwoski Jan 2003

The Psychological Impact Of Carrier Status In Hereditary Disorders, Jane Elizabeth Karwoski

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Previous studies have indicated that carrier status has little effect on self-concept. However, rather than examine autosomal recessive illnesses, wherein genetic responsibility is shared by both parents, the present study samples women at risk of being sole carriers of an X-linked hereditary disorder, Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Previous research most often assessed global self-esteem, thus problems in particular domains (such as future parental role or desirability as a mate) have generally been overlooked. Herein, a stigmatizing process is hypothesized whereby one aspect of the self, genetic identity, may be spoiled through a diminished sense of worthiness to reproduce. Family attitudes toward …

Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally: Public Policy Issues Of The Georgia Hope Scholarship Program And The Lottery For Education, Ross Rubenstein Jan 2003

Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally: Public Policy Issues Of The Georgia Hope Scholarship Program And The Lottery For Education, Ross Rubenstein

Center for Policy Research

The HOPE (Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally_ scholarship program, which began in 1993, is one of the most popular public policies ever enacted in the state of Georgia. This lottery-funded program pays for tuition, fees, and books at any public college or university in the state for any Georgia student who graduates from high school with a B or better grade point average (GPA). To keep the scholarship, students must maintain the B or better GPA in college. The program's popularity has spread well beyond Georgia's borders; at least a dozen other states have instituted similar broad-based merit scholarship programs, and …

Agglomeration, Labor Supply, And The Urban Rat Race, Stuart S. Rosenthal, William C. Strange Jan 2003

Agglomeration, Labor Supply, And The Urban Rat Race, Stuart S. Rosenthal, William C. Strange

Center for Policy Research

This paper establishes the existence of a previously overlooked relationship between agglomeration and hours worked. Among non-professionals, hours worked decrease with the density of workers in the same occupation. Among professionals, a positive relationship is found. This relationship is twice as strong for the young as for the middle-aged. Moreover, young professional hours worked are shown to be especially sensitive to the presence of rivals. We show that these patterns are consistent with the selection of hard workers into cities and the high productivity of agglomerated labor. The behavior of young professionals is also consistent with the presence of keen …

Entrepreneurship And Economic Growth: The Proof Is In The Productivity, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Chihwa Kao Jan 2003

Entrepreneurship And Economic Growth: The Proof Is In The Productivity, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Chihwa Kao

Center for Policy Research

Popular and policy discussions have focused extensively on "entrepreneurship." While entrepreneurship is often viewed from the perspective of the individual's benefits--an increase in standard of living, flexibility in hours, and so forth--much of the policy interest derives from the presumption that entrepreneurs provide economy-wide benefits in the form of new products, lower prices, innovations, and increased productivity. How large are these effects? Using a rich panel of state-level data, we quantify the relationship between productivity growth--by state and by industry--and entrepreneurship. Specifically, we use state-of-the-art econometric techniques for panel data to determine whether variations in the birth rate and death …

On The Measurment Of Job Risk In Hedonic Wage Models, Dan Black, Thomas J. Kniesner Jan 2003

On The Measurment Of Job Risk In Hedonic Wage Models, Dan Black, Thomas J. Kniesner

Center for Policy Research

We examine the incidence, form, and research consequences of measurement error in measure of fatal injury risk in United States workplaces using both BLS and NIOSH data. We find evidence of substantial measurement errors in the fatality risk researchers attach to individual workers when estimating the implicit price of risk and the value of a statistical life. We first examine possible classical attenuation bias in the fatality risk coefficient. However, because we also find non-classical measurement error that differs across multiple risk measures and is not independent of other regressors, more complex statistical procedures than a standard instrumental variables estimator …

The Global Reach Of Hiv/Aids: Science, Politics, Economics, And Research, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 2003

The Global Reach Of Hiv/Aids: Science, Politics, Economics, And Research, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This Article examines the major social, political, economic, and ethical issues involved in the global HIV pandemic. First, it examines the steps needed to prevent and treat HIV effectively and examines why many leaders have not responded more forcefully. This Part discusses the intangible, but crucial, aspect of political will. Second, this Article looks at the divisive issue of drugs, patents, and international trade law. Highly developed countries usually want to uphold the patent system to protect the proprietary interests of drug companies, which keeps the price of HIV/AIDS drugs high, placing them out of the reach of resource-poor countries. …

De-Regulation Of The Air Waves: Is Antitrust Enough?, Edward D. Cavanagh Jan 2003

De-Regulation Of The Air Waves: Is Antitrust Enough?, Edward D. Cavanagh

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

By enacting the Telecommunications Act of 19961, Congress mandated large-scale deregulation of the television, radio, telecommunications and cable industries. Having successfully de-regulated the airline, interstate transportation and energy industries, Congress sought to dismantle the tangled legal, administrative and regulatory structure that had governed broadcast media and telecommunications for decades and replace it with a competitive model. Its goal was to minimize the inefficiencies inherent in any regulatory scheme and allow participants to reap the economic benefits of the free market. Equally important, Congress wanted to be sure that the emerging cable, satellite and cellular technologies were not stifled by …

Optimizing Parameters For Efficient Introduction Of Transgenes Into Turfgrass, Chhandak Basu Jan 2003

Optimizing Parameters For Efficient Introduction Of Transgenes Into Turfgrass, Chhandak Basu

Open Access Dissertations

Embryogenic callus was generated from seeds of turfgrass species (creeping bentgrass, cv. Penn A4 and Providence) on tissue culture medium. After 12 weeks, embryogenic calli were identified and used for bombardment with chimeric gene constructs that confer phosphinothricin resistance (bar) as a selectable marker and β-glucuronidase (GUS) as a reporter gene. After bombardment, the calli were transferred to selection medium and then to regeneration medium. Putative transgenic turfgrass plants were generated and molecular analysis (PCR) was performed to confirm presence of the transgene (bar, GUS). We analyzed reporter gene (GUS) expression in turfgrass cells over a developmental time period of …

Relationship Of Early Intervention Service Coordination Model To Qualify Of Transition And Family Empowerment, Candace Adams Jan 2003

Relationship Of Early Intervention Service Coordination Model To Qualify Of Transition And Family Empowerment, Candace Adams

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship that variability in early intervention service coordinate model has with the quality of transition fro early intervention to preschool special education services and with the degree to which families feel empowered to advocate for their child and families' needs. Eighty-five service coordinator and family pairs in the state of New York were recruited for the study based on their adherence to one of two service coordination models: 1) dedication service coordination or 2) service coordination plus provision of other developmental services (dual role model). Both service coordinators and families rated …

Why We Need The Independent Sector: The Behavior, Law, And Ethics Of Not-For-Profit Hospitals, Jill R. Horwitz Jan 2003

Why We Need The Independent Sector: The Behavior, Law, And Ethics Of Not-For-Profit Hospitals, Jill R. Horwitz

Articles

Among the major forms of corporate ownership, the not-for-profit ownership form is distinct in its behavior, legal constraints, and moral obligations. A new empirical analysis of the American hospital industry, using eleven years of data for all urban general hospitals in the country, shows that corporate form accounts for large differences in the provision of specific medical services. Not-for-profit hospitals systematically provide both private and public goods that are in the public interest, and that other forms fail to provide. Two hypotheses are proposed to account for the findings, one legal and one moral. While no causal claims are made, …

The Station Nightclub Fire And Federal Jurisdictional Reach: The Multidistrict, Multiparty, Multiforum Jurisdiction Act Of 2002, Peter Adomeit Jan 2003

The Station Nightclub Fire And Federal Jurisdictional Reach: The Multidistrict, Multiparty, Multiforum Jurisdiction Act Of 2002, Peter Adomeit

Faculty Scholarship

The Multidistrict, Multiparty, Multiforum Jurisdiction Act of 2002 has great potential for expediting The Station fire cases. The object of the Act is to place all of the cases from a mass disaster before a single judge, who can supervise discovery, then try the issue of liability, and either try or remand the issue of damages. How this new procedural tool will function is uncertain. The Act consolidates the power in one court to either urge the parties to accept a global settlement, or send the unresolved cases to trial. There are many unanswered questions. It is up to judges …
