White Flight? : George Pepperdine College's Move To Malibu, 1965-1972, Candace Denise Jones

Theses and Dissertations

George Pepperdine College, a Church of Christ affiliated institution of higher education in Los Angeles, California, had its foundation rocked in the 1960s by two events: The Watts Riots of 1965 and the 1969 shooting of Los Angeles youth, Larry Donnell Kimmons. These events challenged the original commitment that founder George Pepperdine had for the Los Angeles area and forever changed the future direction of George Pepperdine College (GPC). The Watts Riots served as the catalyst, generating a desire by the executive administrators of GPC to leave the perceived chaotic and unpredictable urban setting. The second event, the tragic shooting …

Trade Sanctions And Human Rights–Past, Present, And Future, Carlos Manuel Vázquez Jan 2003

Trade Sanctions And Human Rights–Past, Present, And Future, Carlos Manuel Vázquez

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The relationship between the international law of trade and the international law of human rights has commanded an increasing amount of scholarly attention in the past few years, perhaps spurred by the well-known events at Seattle in 1999. This article offers some reflections on this relationship, focusing on the permissibility under international law of imposing trade sanctions against nations that commit violations of international human rights. Part I begins with some reflections on the historical relationship between these two bodies of law. Part I also considers why the human rights community appears to feel threatened by the international trade system, …

A Crisis Of Caring: A Catholic Critique Of American Welfare Reform, Vincent D. Rougeau Jan 2003

A Crisis Of Caring: A Catholic Critique Of American Welfare Reform, Vincent D. Rougeau

Journal Articles

The current deterioration of the American economy is bringing new attention to the problem of poverty in the United States. After falling over the last few years, the number of Americans living in poverty has begun to rise once again. Notwithstanding the achievements of recent "welfare reforms," the American poor continue to be numerous by any measure.

Unfortunately, decades of affluence have exacerbated American tendencies to view liberal concepts such as freedom, autonomy, tolerance, and choice in ways that accentuate personal autonomy over community integration. These liberal values have been increasingly unhinged from strong countervailing principles like duty and responsibility, …

Canon Law And The Human Person, John J. Coughlin Jan 2003

Canon Law And The Human Person, John J. Coughlin

Journal Articles

This article explores the unity of law and theology in the 1983 Code of Canon Law. The unity has remained critical since canon law emerged in the ancient Church. From the origins of the primitive Christian communities through the patristic era, the Church manifested a tension between charism and office, spirit and law? The medieval canonists achieved a great synthesis of the reason of law and faith of theology. The unified theory helped to form the basis of the Western legal tradition. The Reformation focus on sola fide (faith alone) tended to sever the unity. With the Enlightenment, reason was …

Setting The Pace: Model Inclusive Child Care Centers Serving Families Of Children With Emotional Or Behavioral Challenges, Eileen M. Brennan, Jennifer R. Bradley, Shane Ama, Natalie Diane Cawood

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Approximately 10% of American children experience an emotional or behavioral disorder that causes some level of impairment in their development, learning, or functioning in daily life, and the numbers of those affected appear to be growing (U.S. Public Health Service, 2000). With the entry of many family caregivers into the workforce, increasing numbers of children with these challenges are enrolling in child care settings that offer services to infants, toddlers, young children, or school aged youth (Shonkoff & Phillips, 2000). Child care settings can provide a unique opportunity to address the needs of children with emotional or behavioral challenges and …

High Frequency Pure Tone Audiometry And High Frequency Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions: A Correlational Analysis, Kimberly J. Lavoie Jan 2003

High Frequency Pure Tone Audiometry And High Frequency Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions: A Correlational Analysis, Kimberly J. Lavoie

Dissertations and Theses

Previous studies show that pure tone thresholds are strongly correlated with distortion product otoacoustic emission amplitudes when evaluating the frequency range from 1 to 8 kHz (Avan & Bonfils, 1993). Little is known about correlations between these two measures at higher frequencies from 9-16 kHz. This study compared pure tone thresholds and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) in this high frequency range for 29 normal hearing subjects ages 18-30. Pure tone thresholds were obtained at 250-16 kHz and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) 2,211-17,675 were measured in the same ears. DPOAE amplitudes were measured using a constant F1/F2 ratio of …

When Terrorism Threatens Health: How Far Are Limitations On Personal And Ecomonic Liberties Justified, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 2003

When Terrorism Threatens Health: How Far Are Limitations On Personal And Ecomonic Liberties Justified, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The government is engaged in a homeland-security project to safeguard the population's health from potential terrorist attacks. This project is politically charged because it affords the state enhanced powers to restrict personal and economic liberties. Just as governmental powers relating to intelligence, law enforcement, and criminal justice curtail individual interests, so too do public health powers.

Retaining Intensive Care Nurses In Las Vegas: The Importance Of Nurse Manager Leadership, Megan Vendetti

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In today's healthcare climate, retaining staff nurses is desirable and may be a more permanent solution to improve the nursing shortage. Employing a leadership style that is conducive to staff nurse job satisfaction may be needed to achieve that goal. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of the unit manager leadership style with job satisfaction and intent to stay in the intensive care setting. Staff nurses in two Las Vegas hospitals, one private and one public, were surveyed. A questionnaire was developed and voluntarily completed by 125 registered nurses employed in adult and pediatric intensive care …

Computer Aided Management Of Processes (Camp) At The National Environmental Service Center., Wiselin Dhas Mathuram

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

All business operations, either manufacturing or service, have certain processes they follow to accomplish their goals. These processes change with time due to financial performance, emerging market opportunities, or erosion of market share and they often need to be reengineered to improve their performance. This research aims to analyze and improve the product review process at the National Environmental Service Center (NESC). A supporting organizational structure is proposed. Process improvement was conducted by employee interviews, and a database was developed to integrate information flow between departments. The new software tool facilitates the workflow and helps to track, monitor, and manage …

The Effect Of 8 U. S. C. 1324(D) In Transporting Prosecutions: Does The Confrontation Clause Still Apply To Alien Defendants., Donna F. Coltharp Jan 2003

The Effect Of 8 U. S. C. 1324(D) In Transporting Prosecutions: Does The Confrontation Clause Still Apply To Alien Defendants., Donna F. Coltharp

St. Mary's Law Journal

Cases prosecuted under 8 U.S.C. §1324 present special challenges for the Government and for defendants. Under §1324, it is a crime to transport or smuggle aliens into the United States. Prosecuting transporters or smugglers may present a challenge if a witness is unavailable. Even though transporting or smuggling always has witnesses—the alien(s) who hired the smuggler or transporter—not all witnesses have prolonged detentions, and some are returned to their native country. The transporter or smuggler may then assert their Sixth Amendment right. The Sixth Amendment’s Confrontation Clause requires that in all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to …
