All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

A series of seven focus groups were conducted in various locations throughout northern Ohio to identify and assess coastal resources management training needs across the Ohio Great Lakes basin. The focus groups were comprised of a cross-section of professionals who make decisions affecting watershed areas or Lake Erie coastal areas. Six of the focus groups included decision-makers considered previous and potential users of coastal resources management training (non-providers). A seventh focus group included decision-makers who provide training in coastal resources management (providers).

When Context Matters: A Multilevel Analysis Of Household And, Wendy C. Regoeczi Jan 2003

When Context Matters: A Multilevel Analysis Of Household And, Wendy C. Regoeczi

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Studies examining the effects of density and crowding on human social behaviour have produced inconsistent results. This paper argues that among the reasons for these varied findings are: (1) the failure of researchers to examine how the level of density in the wider contextual environment influences the nature of the relationship between household density and social behaviour; (2) the tendency of past studies to overlook the negative consequences of both very low and very high levels of density; and (3) a lack of research investigating whether multiple coping strategies to high-density environments may be invoked by a single individual. Data …

Detecting Candida Albicans In Human Milk, Jimi Francis, Demosthenes Pappagianis, M. Jane Heinig, Bo Lonnerdal, Kathryn G. Dewey Jan 2003

Detecting Candida Albicans In Human Milk, Jimi Francis, Demosthenes Pappagianis, M. Jane Heinig, Bo Lonnerdal, Kathryn G. Dewey

Health & Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Procedures for diagnosis of mammary candidosis, including laboratory confirmation, are not well defined. Lactoferrin present in human milk can inhibit growth of Candida albicans, thereby limiting the ability to detect yeast infections. The inhibitory effect of various lactoferrin concentrations on the growth of C. albicans in whole human milk was studied. The addition of iron to the milk led to a two- to threefold increase in cell counts when milk contained 3.0 mg of lactoferrin/ml and markedly reduced the likelihood of false-negative culture results. This method may provide the necessary objective support needed for diagnosis of mammary candidosis.

Grandparent Visitation Claims: Assessing The Multiple Harms Of Litigation To Families And Children, Stephen A. Newman Jan 2003

Grandparent Visitation Claims: Assessing The Multiple Harms Of Litigation To Families And Children, Stephen A. Newman

Articles & Chapters

This article provides a detailed appraisal of the negative consequences of grandparent visitation lawsuits, and of the harms caused by state-coerced grandparent visitation, in the context of the malfunctioning extended family. I suggest that the special weight afforded a fit parent's decision should be very substantial, and that it should be dispositive of the case unless the grandparent can produce convincing evidence showing that extraordinary circumstances, involving clear harm to the child, justify court ordered visitation. This high degree of deference to parents derives from two features of grandparent visitation cases that deserve more attention than they have received so …

An Extended Hierarchical Task Analysis For Error Prediction In Medical Devices, Phillip H. Chung, Jiajie Zhang, Todd R. Johnson, Vimla L. Patel Jan 2003

An Extended Hierarchical Task Analysis For Error Prediction In Medical Devices, Phillip H. Chung, Jiajie Zhang, Todd R. Johnson, Vimla L. Patel

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

This paper introduces an extended hierarchical task analysis (HTA) methodology devised to evaluate and compare user interfaces on volumetric infusion pumps. The pumps were studied along the dimensions of overall usability and propensity for generating human error. With HTA as our framework, we analyzed six pumps on a variety of common tasks using Norman’s Action theory. The introduced method of evaluation divides the problem space between the external world of the device interface and the user’s internal cognitive world, allowing for predictions of potential user errors at the human-device level. In this paper, one detailed analysis is provided as an …

Stress Management During Pregnancy: An Investigation Of The Psychosocial, Behavioral, And Cognitive Correlates, Leanne Marie Mauriello Jan 2003

Stress Management During Pregnancy: An Investigation Of The Psychosocial, Behavioral, And Cognitive Correlates, Leanne Marie Mauriello

Open Access Dissertations

Health professionals recognize and study the multitude of health risks initated by the occurrence of stress during childbearing months. However, very few researchers have examined how women cope with or manage stress during pregnancy. In this study preliminary measurement and prediction analyses were conducted to initiate research on stress management during pregnancy using the framework of the Transtheoretical Model. A sample of 156 pregnant women was recruited from waiting rooms at midwife and obstetrician offices. Measures of decisional balance, confidence, stress, and coping specific to a pregnant population were developed. Exploratory measurement analyses produced relatively brief and internally consistent instruments …

Factors Influencing Transition From Early Intervention, Nina June Pinnock Jan 2003

Factors Influencing Transition From Early Intervention, Nina June Pinnock

Open Access Dissertations

This exploratory study examined factors that predict parental satisfaction in the transition of a child with a disability from Early Intervention to preschool at the age of three. In addition to a thorough literature review, theoretical preparation included focus groups with service coordinators, receiving agencies and parents. The sample participants were 62 parent respondents to an Early Intervention transition to preschool questionnaire distributed by Rhode Island Parent Information Network (RIPIN). A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted on proposed factors of parental empowerment, communication and culture, which did not emerge as discrete indicators of parental satisfaction. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) …

Development And Validation Of Transtheoretical Measures For College Student Spiritual Expression, John A. Ward Jan 2003

Development And Validation Of Transtheoretical Measures For College Student Spiritual Expression, John A. Ward

Open Access Dissertations

The study of the use of religious techniques in counseling and religious/spiritual expression has gained increased attention in research literature over the last 15-20 years. Psychologists are becoming increasingly accepting of the role of religious techniques in counseling and the role of religious/spiritual expression in human development. However, most agree that the research base needs to be more inclusive and expanded. When religion is the focus of investigation in college student populations, most attention is focused on religious beliefs and practices, and changes in beliefs over the course of the college experience. The transtheoretical model (TTM) is an integrative model …

Thyroidal Regulation Of Stomach Development And Toxicity Of Pcb 126 In Metamorphosing Summer Flounder, Bruno Soffientino Jan 2003

Thyroidal Regulation Of Stomach Development And Toxicity Of Pcb 126 In Metamorphosing Summer Flounder, Bruno Soffientino

Open Access Dissertations

The overarching theme of this thesis work is the development of the stomach in summer flounder, which occurs during metamorphosis. During normal development, proliferation of the gastric epithelium increases in early metamorphosis when incipient gastric glands first appear, and declines at late metamorphosis when gastric glands are completely developed. Inhibiting thyroid hormone prevents the increase in proliferation and the differentiation of glands, while high levels of thyroid hormone accelerate gastric gland differentiation but also inhibit proliferation. The hormone is necessary to cause cell proliferation, but at high doses it appears to selectively stimulate differentiation, suggesting that the steady increase in …

Assessment Of The Rhode Island Coastal Lagoon Ecosystem, Kathryn Hale Ford Jan 2003

Assessment Of The Rhode Island Coastal Lagoon Ecosystem, Kathryn Hale Ford

Open Access Dissertations

The health of the Rhode Island coastal lagoon ecosystem is of importance due to its critical role as a wildlife habitat and recreation destination. As human population continues to expand along the coast, this ecosystem will receive increasing pressure from contaminants. By examining how the lagoons have changed in the past, we can postulate what variables are linked to change. Current conditions need to be thoroughly studied to provide a baseline with which to study future change, as well as to determine areas of concern in the lagoons. In order to understand how the ecosystem responds to such pressures, a …
