Escape From New York: Analyzing The State's Relative Interests In Proscribing The Withdrawal Of Life Support And Physician-Assisted Suicide, Colin Miller Jan 2003

Escape From New York: Analyzing The State's Relative Interests In Proscribing The Withdrawal Of Life Support And Physician-Assisted Suicide, Colin Miller

Faculty Publications

This Note argues that states cannot consistently prohibit physician assisted suicide for terminally ill patients while they continue to allow the withdrawal of life support for even non-terminal patients. All of the state interests identified by the Supreme Court in rejecting a right to assisted suicide are implicated to a higher degree by withdrawal of life support. The primary reason for this difference is that withdrawal of life support often involves incompetent patients and surrogate decision making while assisted suicide by definition requires a competent patient choosing to hasten her death.

Antimicrobial Activity And Characteristics Of Bacteriocins Produced By Vaginal Lactobacilli, Şengül Alpay Karaoğlu, Faruk Aydi̇n, S. Sirri Kiliç, Ali̇ O. Kiliç

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The aim of this study is to test the production of bacteriocin in vaginal Lactobacilli and determining the characterization and antibacterial activity of this bacteriocin. For this reason 100 Lactobacillus strains were isolated and identified from vaginal swab samples of 75 women who attended obstetric and gynecology clinics. It was determined that six of 100 Lactobacillus strains produced bacteriocin. The antibacterial activity of bacteriocins was examined and found to be effective on vaginal L. gasseri, L. acidophilus, Gardnerella vaginalis ATCC 14018 and Pseudomonas aeroginosa ATCC 10145. We also found that bacteriocins were sensitive to proteinase enzymes and alkalinity, but resistant …

Diagnostic Value Of Ki-67li In Hepatocellular Carcinoma Ki-67 Antigen Expression In Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Metastatic Adenocarcinoma And Normal Hepatocytes, Işin Soyuer, Cemi̇l Eki̇nci̇, Muhsi̇n Kaya, Yasemi̇n Genç, Kadi̇r Bahar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

One hundred liver fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) specimens obtained from 42 patients with hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC), 38 patients with metastatic adenocarcinomas (MAC) and 20 patients with non-malignant liver disease (control group) were studied. Liver specimens were stained with an immunoperoxidase method using a monoclonal antibody to Ki-67 (MIB1). Ki-67 antigen was visualised in cold acetone, and a fresh liver needle aspiration cytology specimen using antibodies was used to identify proliferating hepatocytes. In this study it was examined that; if there is a difference between the groups in terms of Ki-67 positivity and degree of differentiation of tumor and the relationship …

Prevalence Of Oral Precancerous Lesions In A Selected Turkish Population, Çağri Deli̇lbaşi, Hakan Akman, Eni̇s Redzep, Ümi̇t K. Akal Jan 2003

Prevalence Of Oral Precancerous Lesions In A Selected Turkish Population, Çağri Deli̇lbaşi, Hakan Akman, Eni̇s Redzep, Ümi̇t K. Akal

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Oral cancers are malignancies that have high metastasis potential and thus survival rate of the patients is low. Today, epidemiological studies are being widely conducted on precancerous lesions, defined as predecessor lesions. In order to investigate the prevalence of oral precancerous lesions among Turkish people, 2000 consecutive outpatients who referred to our clinic for routine dental treatment, were examined. The proportion of lesions with potential to transform into cancer was 4.0%. It was concluded that leukoplakia and lichen planus were the most commonly observed precancerous lesions. All lesions had male propensity and the most affected site was the buccal mucosa. …

Immunization Of Mice With Plasmid Dna Encoding Hepatitis B Virus Core Antigen (Hbcag), Yasemi̇n Bulut, Hakan Bulut, Mehmet Zi̇ya Doymaz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The aim of this study was to investigate the antibody response following immunization with plasmid vector DNA containing the hepatitis B virus core antigen (HBcAg) gene of a hepatitis B virus (HBV) isolated from a patient in Turkey. A HBcAg gene fragment was cloned into a pcDNA 3 eukaryotic expression vector. After confirmation of the cloning of the HBcAg gene, the expressing vector based HBcAg was used in DNA immunization experiments. Four-to 6-week-old Balb/c mice were immunized with HBcAg expressing plasmids and the anti-HBcAg antibody responses of the mice were evaluated by enzyme immunoassay (EIA). The results of this study …

Evaluation Of Phagocytic Function Of The Spleen After Splenic Artery Ligation In Secondary Hypersplenism, Celaletti̇n Vatansev, Şaki̇r Teki̇n, Mustafa Şahi̇n, Mustafa Serdengeçti̇, Mustafa C. Avunduk

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of splenic artery ligation on the phagocytic functions and morphology of the spleen in rabbits in which secondary hypersplenism was induced by splenic vein ligation (SVL). Thirty New Zealand-type rabbits were included in this study. The rabbits were separated into three groups of 10 subjects each. The first group underwent laparotomy, and the second and third groups underwent laparotomy + splenic vein ligation. At the end of the fourth week, the first and second groups underwent laparotomy while the third group underwent laparotomy + splenic artery ligation. At the end …

Problems In Urinary Iodine Determination Methods And An Automated Kinetic Assay As A Solution, Mustafa Gültepe, Ömer Özcan, Osman Meti̇n İpçi̇oğlu, Kadi̇r Avşar Jan 2003

Problems In Urinary Iodine Determination Methods And An Automated Kinetic Assay As A Solution, Mustafa Gültepe, Ömer Özcan, Osman Meti̇n İpçi̇oğlu, Kadi̇r Avşar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Accurate, fast and economical urinary iodine measurement is very important in diagnosing iodine deficiency disorders. The urinary iodine determination method using ammonium persulfate digestion based on the Sandell-Kolthoff reaction was optimized and modified to kinetic and automated assay. Ammonium persulfate digestion was performed at +95 ºC in a water-bath to ± 0.1 ºC precision. The performance of both the Sandell-Kolthoff reaction at 37 ºC and its kinetic measurement at 340 nm was tested in a random access automated analyzer. For method comparison, urinary iodine concentrations were measured using both the conventional chloric acid digestion method and the kinetic automated method …
