Comparison Of A Quick Drinking Screen With The Timeline Followback For Individuals With Alcohol Problems, Linda C. Sobell, Sangeeta Agrawal, Mark B. Sobell, Gloria I. Leo, Lisa J. Young, John A. Cunningham, Edward R. Simco

Faculty Articles

Objective: Two major strategies have typically been used to assess recent drinking: (1) Daily Estimation (DE) measures such as the Timeline Followback (TLFB) and (2) Quantity-Frequency (QF) summary measures. Although QF measures provide a quick and easy measure of consumption, they have been criticized as not being able to capture sporadic and unpatterned drinking (e.g., days that reflect important social and/or health risks). The TLFB, a psychometrically sound drinking assessment method, is able to capture all drinking, including sporadic heavy days and unpatterned drinking. In some situations, however, recall of daily drinking may not be possible or practical (e.g., limited …

Archeological Excavation And Reburial Of Unmarked Historic Graves In The Pioneer Cemetary (41bo202), Brazoria County, Texas, Angelina L. Tiné, Douglas K. Boyd Nov 2003

Archeological Excavation And Reburial Of Unmarked Historic Graves In The Pioneer Cemetary (41bo202), Brazoria County, Texas, Angelina L. Tiné, Douglas K. Boyd

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Three unmarked graves within the predominantly African American Pioneer Cemetery in the City of Brazoria (Brazoria County), Texas, were exhumed and reburied within the cemetery. The graves were located within the right of way of State Highway 332, and were found during an earlier search phase done in conjunction with a planned expansion of the highway. The burial excavations and reburial were done in March and April 2003, by Prewitt and Associates, Inc., for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The graves contained the remains of three unknown individuals—a young woman (17–23 years old), an older woman (45–60 years old), …

Joint Modeling And Estimation For Recurrent Event Processes And Failure Time Data, Chiung-Yu Huang, Mei-Cheng Wang Nov 2003

Joint Modeling And Estimation For Recurrent Event Processes And Failure Time Data, Chiung-Yu Huang, Mei-Cheng Wang

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Recurrent event data are commonly encountered in longitudinal follow-up studies related to biomedical science, econometrics, reliability, and demography. In many studies, recurrent events serve as important measurements for evaluating disease progression, health deterioration, or insurance risk. When analyzing recurrent event data, an independent censoring condition is typically required for the construction of statistical methods. Nevertheless, in some situations, the terminating time for observing recurrent events could be correlated with the recurrent event process and, as a result, the assumption of independent censoring is violated. In this paper, we consider joint modeling of a recurrent event process and a failure time …

Option Value And Dynamic Programming Model Estimates Of Social Security Disability Insurance Application Timing, Rickard V. Burkhauser, J. S. Butler, Gulcin Gumus Nov 2003

Option Value And Dynamic Programming Model Estimates Of Social Security Disability Insurance Application Timing, Rickard V. Burkhauser, J. S. Butler, Gulcin Gumus

Economics - All Scholarship

This paper develops dynamic structural models - an option value model and a dynamic programming model - of the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) application timing decision. We estimate the time to application from the point at which a health condition first begins to affect the kind or amount of work that a currently employed person can do. We use Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and restricted access Social Security earnings data for estimation. Based on tests of both in-sample and out-of-sample predictive accuracy, our option value model performs better than both our dynamic programming model and our reduced form …

Crossing Disciplinary Borders: Re-Examining Latino/A Studies And Latin American Studies In The 1990s, Anna Sampaio

Ethnic Studies

Over the 30 years of their existence, studies of Latinos/as in the U.S. and the field of Latin American Studies have emerged largely as divided disciplines. That is, despite what would appear to be similar sensibilities including comparable criticisms of Western hegemony and the neocolonial practices of the U.S., as well as the political, economic, and cultural displacement of similar populations, the two areas of study have more often regarded each other as competitive colleagues rather than complimentary practices. In the following study, I examine the nature of the two disciplines paying particular attention to the political context surrounding their …
