Unusual Presentations Of Wegener's Granulomatosis: Pitfalls In Early Diagnosis, Syed Mansoor Ahmed Shah, Malik Anas Rabbani, Ambreen Gul, Aasim Ahmad

Section of Nephrology

Wegener's Granulomatosis (WG) is a disorder characterized by necrotizing granulomatous vasculitis that primarily affects the upper and lower respiratory tracts and the kidneys. Although the cause is unknown, there is strong evidence that this is an autoimmune disease and immunosuppressive therapy with cyclophosphamide and corticosteroids efficiently relieves the symptoms and, prevents relapses. We report on four cases of WG that presented with unusual features. The first patient presented with vague joint pain, blackish discoloration of the skin and leg ulcers. The second patient presented as fever of unknown origin and gingival hyperplasia. The third patient presented with hearing loss while …

Toward An Institutional Theory Of Sovereignty, Ryan Goodman, Derek P. Jinks Jan 2003

Toward An Institutional Theory Of Sovereignty, Ryan Goodman, Derek P. Jinks

Faculty Articles

Scholarship in international law is preoccupied with the structural tension between state sovereignty and international obligation. This preoccupation presupposes that states incur sovereignty costs when entering binding international commitments. In our view, this presupposition requires substantial qualification. In this Article, we propose a sociological model of sovereignty that views states as organizational entities embedded in and reflecting a wider social environment. Such an approach, we maintain, illuminates the ways in which constraints empower actors (including states). Our claim is not simply that international law helps overcome collective action problems by facilitating cooperation and coordination. Rather, we maintain that the constitutive …

Regulation For Conservatives: Behavioral Economics And The Case For "Asymmetric Paternalism", Colin Camerer, Samuel Issacharoff, George Loewenstein, Ted O'Donoghue, Matthew Rabin Jan 2003

Regulation For Conservatives: Behavioral Economics And The Case For "Asymmetric Paternalism", Colin Camerer, Samuel Issacharoff, George Loewenstein, Ted O'Donoghue, Matthew Rabin

Faculty Articles

This paper examines the regulatory implications of behavioral economic insights. The central effect of behavioral economics in the legal literature to date has been to challenge the premise of formal economic theory that individuals understand their preferences and work to maximize these preferences. Behavioral economics has gathered increased attention in the economic analysis of law because of its demonstration that individual decisionmaking is prone to numerous biases and heuristics, and that as a result individuals may not act to realize their best interests. Part of the enthusiasm for behavioral economics in the legal literature has come from the apparent compatibility …

The Victims: Did The Nazi T–4 Euthanasia Program Discriminate Among Victims In The Targeted Groups?, Nancy Unger Jan 2003

The Victims: Did The Nazi T–4 Euthanasia Program Discriminate Among Victims In The Targeted Groups?, Nancy Unger

History

Nancy C. Unger and J. Michael Butler take up the question of the targeting of Jews for elimination in the Holocaust. Was this emphasis a special case or part of a broader spectrum of elimination policies designed to rid Germany of all groups designated as undesirable by Nazi ideology— including homosexuals, Gypsies, and the mentally ill?

Unger argues for the specificity of the targeting of the Jewish population for extermination by comparing it to the case of homosexuals. Homosexual men were incarcerated in the death camps, and many were killed in the course of the Holocaust, but, Unger argues, their …

Lipopolysaccharide Or Whole Bacteria Block The Conversion Of Inflammatory Monocytes Into Dendritic Cells In Vivo, Gianluca Rotta, Emmerson W. Edwards, Sabina Sangaletti Jan 2003

Lipopolysaccharide Or Whole Bacteria Block The Conversion Of Inflammatory Monocytes Into Dendritic Cells In Vivo, Gianluca Rotta, Emmerson W. Edwards, Sabina Sangaletti

Publications

Monocytes can develop into dendritic cells (DCs) that migrate to lymph nodes (LNs) and present antigens to T cells. However, we find that this differentiation is blocked when monocytes accumulate subcutaneously in response to bacteria or lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The inhibition of DC differentiation is mediated by the bacteria and in conjunction with inflammatory cells recruited at the site of injection. Inhibition of migratory DC development was reversed in Toll-like receptor (TLR)4-mutated mice when LPS, but not whole bacteria, was injected, suggesting that TLR4 is one but not the only mediator of the inhibition. The block imposed by bacteria was partly …

Dc-Sign (Cd209) Mediates Dengue Virus Infection Of Human Dendritic Cells, Boonrat Tassaneetrithep, Timothy H. Burgess, Angela Granelli-Piperno Jan 2003

Dc-Sign (Cd209) Mediates Dengue Virus Infection Of Human Dendritic Cells, Boonrat Tassaneetrithep, Timothy H. Burgess, Angela Granelli-Piperno

Publications

Dengue virus is a single-stranded, enveloped RNA virus that productively infects human dendritic cells (DCs) primarily at the immature stage of their differentiation. We now find that all four serotypes of dengue use DC-SIGN (CD209), a C-type lectin, to infect dendritic cells. THP-1 cells become susceptible to dengue infection after transfection of DC-specific ICAM-3 grabbing nonintegrin (DC-SIGN), or its homologue L-SIGN, whereas the infection of dendritic cells is blocked by anti-DC-SIGN antibodies and not by antibodies to other molecules on these cells. Viruses produced by dendritic cells are infectious for DC-SIGN- and L-SIGN-bearing THP-1 cells and other permissive cell lines. …

Aids, Orphans, And Development In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Review Of The Dilemma Of Public Health And Development, Joe Lugalla Jan 2003

Aids, Orphans, And Development In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Review Of The Dilemma Of Public Health And Development, Joe Lugalla

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

HIV/AIDS is having devastating consequences on families, young children, and other vulnerable social groups. In this paper, I review the impact of HIV/AIDS on families and development in sub-Saharan Africa. I begin by showing the magnitude of the problem and the factors that have led to rapid spread of HIV/AIDS in this sub-continent. I discuss gender inequality, poverty, social inequality, and globalization, and show how these facilitate the rapid spread of the epidemic. I show how AIDS is creating a mass of orphans on the one hand, and how it is impacting development and creating new public health contradictions on …

Addressing Urban Transportation Equity In The United States , Robert D. Bullard Jan 2003

Addressing Urban Transportation Equity In The United States , Robert D. Bullard

Fordham Urban Law Journal

Transportation touches almost every aspect of our lives and plays a pivotal role in shaping human interactions, economic mobility, and sustainability. Transportation provides access to opportunity and serves as a key component in addressing poverty, unemployment, and equal opportunity goals. This article examines the inequity that exists in the United States when it comes to transit, as the benefits from transportation advancements and investments are not distributed equally among communities, making transportation equity an issue of civil rights and social justice. This article frames transportation issues as a continuation of the civil rights movement and the wrestling with differential treatment …

Electronic Signatures In E-Healthcare: The Need For A Federal Standard, Ashoke S. Talukdar Jan 2003

Electronic Signatures In E-Healthcare: The Need For A Federal Standard, Ashoke S. Talukdar

Journal of Law and Health

Healthcare, like many industries, is fast embracing the benefits of modern information technology ("IT"). The wide range of available publications on the use of IT in healthcare indicates that IT provides the promise of faster and more comprehensive information about all aspects of the healthcare delivery process, to all classes of its consumers - patients, doctors, nurses, insurance adjudicators, health inspectors, epidemiologists, and biostatisticians. But the drive towards electronic information in health care is not rooted merely in efficiency; more recently, significant emphasis has been placed on patient safety issues raised by the Institute of Medicine's ("IOM") year 2001 quality …

A Tripartite Threat To Medical Records Privacy: Technology, Hipaa's Privacy Rule And The Usa Patriot , Nathan J. Wills Jan 2003

A Tripartite Threat To Medical Records Privacy: Technology, Hipaa's Privacy Rule And The Usa Patriot , Nathan J. Wills

Journal of Law and Health

Proceeding from the proposition that privacy is a fundamental right, this essay notes the importance of maintaining medical records privacy in light of the increased use of technology. It describes the Privacy Rule promulgated under HIPAA, which was intended to strengthen medical records privacy, but notes the restriction of privacy rights following September 11, 2001 ("9/11"). In light of circumscribed privacy rights, the Privacy Rules becomes much more important in protecting medical records privacy. Unfortunately, the Rule falls short of this goal by potentially running afoul of the First and Fourth Amendments. It also fails to provide adequate medical records …

A Healer Or An Executioner - The Proper Role Of A Psychiatrist In A Criminal Justice System, Gregory Dolin Jan 2003

A Healer Or An Executioner - The Proper Role Of A Psychiatrist In A Criminal Justice System, Gregory Dolin

Journal of Law and Health

This article argues that despite the benefits of ridding the criminal justice system of some uncertainty and ignorance with respect to mental health issues, the very close involvement of psychiatrists in the criminal justice system as practiced in the United States is not only illogical and bad policy, but also unethical from the viewpoint of medical ethics. Part II of this article will lay the groundwork for the argument by discussing the history of the insanity defense, and of science's involvement with criminal justice; while Part III, will look into the association of science and the administration of justice in …

Death By Any Other Name: The Federal Government's Inconsistent Treatment Of Drugs Used In Lethal Injections And Physician-Assisted Suicide, Colin Miller Jan 2003

Death By Any Other Name: The Federal Government's Inconsistent Treatment Of Drugs Used In Lethal Injections And Physician-Assisted Suicide, Colin Miller

Journal of Law and Health

While the FDA is under no legal obligation to regulate the drugs used in executions, these recent developments certainly create a moral imperative requiring review. This paper will argue that the federal government cannot consistently refrain from regulating lethal injection drugs while arguing for prosecution of those prescribing drugs to be used by patients in assisted suicide. Part II will look at the opinions in Chaney and the factors behind the FDA's decision not to regulate the drugs used in executions. Part III will look at Oregon's Death with Dignity Act and its authorization by the Supreme Court. Parts IV-VI …

Prohibiting Procreation: A Step In The Right Direction To Protect The Children Of Deadbeat Dads; An Analysis Of The Court Decision In State V. Oakley, Andrea C. Kryszak Jan 2003

Prohibiting Procreation: A Step In The Right Direction To Protect The Children Of Deadbeat Dads; An Analysis Of The Court Decision In State V. Oakley, Andrea C. Kryszak

Journal of Law and Health

This note will entail an in-depth analysis of the Wisconsin Supreme Court's majority opinion and the dissent. This note will also provide support for the majority opinion by evaluating how the court's decision will help protect the children of individuals like Oakley, who intentionally refuse to support them. While some may claim that the probation condition to prohibit Oakley from procreating was a drastic measure, it was the appropriate measure for the court to take. This sentence will serve as a deterrent to Oakley and other fathers who intentionally refuse to support their children. The probation condition will prevent any …

The Advertising Agency's Role In Marketing Communication Demand Creation, Barbara Pellow, Patricia Sorce, Franziska Frey, Lauren Oslon Jan 2003

The Advertising Agency's Role In Marketing Communication Demand Creation, Barbara Pellow, Patricia Sorce, Franziska Frey, Lauren Oslon

Books

Early adopters of digital color printing have consistently been told that they need to educate the advertising agency market to drive digital color print volume. Experience has yielded mixed results for digital color printers who have taken this approach. There have been several hypotheses suggested why agency education has had limited value, including: the price/value equation for digital color printing, limited availability of accurate data for targeted marketing campaigns, and relative lack of use of return on investment metrics for one-toone marketing. As part of the industry analysis effort for the digital color market, the Printing Industry Center at RIT …

Digital Integration And The Lean Manufacturing Practices Of U.S. Printing Firms, Frank Cost, Brett Daly Jan 2003

Digital Integration And The Lean Manufacturing Practices Of U.S. Printing Firms, Frank Cost, Brett Daly

Books

The printing industry is in the midst of a transformation that can best be understood with reference to the metaphor of the “perfect storm.” Four forces—digitization, standardization, the rise of the Internet, and globalization leading to increased competition—have combined to create the storm. The storm is destroying many companies in its path. Other companies are learning how to ride through it and harness its awesome power to their best advantage. Technology can play a critical role in reducing the costs of business and manufacturing processes. But the acquisition of new technology in the absence of a disciplined approach to process …

Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation For Breast Cancer Post-Reconstruction Surgeries, Kristin Arialis Jan 2003

Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation For Breast Cancer Post-Reconstruction Surgeries, Kristin Arialis

Honors Capstones

I have proposed a set of musculoskeletal rehabilitation protocols for the different types of post-reconstruction surgeries for breast cancer patients. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women ages 40-59. Most breast cancer disease patients require a mastectomy procedure in which the entire breast tissue is removed. In addition, many women opt to have the missing breast reconstructed, using tissue from another part of their body to supplement the breast tissue taken out during the mastectomy. Since muscle tissue is removed from one part ofthe body and transposed to another part ofthe body, it is important to …
