G03-1487 Fat And Fat Substitutes, Georgia Jones Jan 2003

G03-1487 Fat And Fat Substitutes, Georgia Jones

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

For some people, fat has a negative connotation. However, fat is a necessary nutrient and provides many functions in food products.

Fats are a source of energy for the body and supply essential fatty acids, such as linoleic and linolenic. They are required for maintaining healthy skin and regulating cholesterol production. Fats are used to carry fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K and aid in their absorption from the intestine.

Fats play a key role in determining texture, taste and flavor of foods and affect the acceptability of food. They provide the smooth texture of salad dressing, the creamy …

Omega-3 Fatty Acids And Swine Reproduction - A Review, Duane Reese Jan 2003

Omega-3 Fatty Acids And Swine Reproduction - A Review, Duane Reese

Nebraska Swine Reports

A literature review was conducted to examine the role dietary omega-3 fatty acids may play in swine reproduction. Omega-3 fatty acids are not normally present to any great extent in practical swine diets, but they are increasingly important in human and pet health. Swine nutritionists have focused primarily on the effect omega-3 fatty acids may have on littler size, piglet preweaning mortality, and boar fertility. Feeding omega-3 fatty acids to sows has not generally improved litter size. Piglet preweaning mortality may be improved by omega-3 fatty acid supplementation provided sows are allowed to farrow naturally (without induction). Boar fertility seems …

The Origin And Emergence Of International Environmental Norms, Armin Rosencranz

UC Law SF International Law Review

In this symposium essay, I intend to explore the origins and influence of international environmental norms. I believe I can identify twenty norms as either prevailing or rising norms of global environmental law: sic utere tuo ut alienum non laedas (use your property so that the property of others is not damaged); subsidiarity; cultural diversity; the environment is a human right; the common heritage of humankind; environmental impact assessment; intergenerational equity; state sovereignty; the polluter pays principle; active role of civil society and NGOs; notification and consultation; equal access to justice; monitoring, reporting and disclosure; sustainable development; the precautionary principle; …

International Environmental Justice: Rights And Remedies, Kenneth F. Mccallion Jan 2003

International Environmental Justice: Rights And Remedies, Kenneth F. Mccallion

UC Law SF International Law Review

Although environmental rights are not explicitly enumerated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it has become generally recognized that environmental rights are closely linked with the right to life, which is the most fundamental jus cogens norm, without which no other rights can be exercised. As the environmental crisis has accelerated in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, constitutional drafters around the globe have explicitly enshrined in their constitutions some form of obligation to protect the environment or other environmental rights. Consequently, states have come to realize the existence of a duty to prevent grave environmental destruction, particularly in the …

Remedying Past Abuses Of Governmental Power - Legal Accountability For The 1968 Events In Poland, Susanne Starecki Jan 2003

Remedying Past Abuses Of Governmental Power - Legal Accountability For The 1968 Events In Poland, Susanne Starecki

UC Law SF International Law Review

Since the 1968 events in Poland, the Polish government has systematically subjected Polish Jews to degrading treatment, denied them their rights to freedom of religion, denied them their right to the enjoyment of property and engaged in numerous acts of discrimination. The issue of justice and reparations for these Polish Jews must be addressed. This note examines the means Polish Jews may explore to remedy Polish governmental abuses. Due to the absence of applicable domestic laws and reparations by Poland, Polish Jews need to utilize international tribunals, particularly the European Court of Human Rights.

Reclaiming Civil Rights In Uncivil Times, Eric K. Yamamoto

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

Three Cs: Celebration, Caution, and Challenge. Three C's of both worry and hope. The first C is to celebrate the Civil Rights Movement's accomplishments, then and now-the innumerable ways as the movement broadened it has bettered the daily lives of communities of color and, indeed, all Americans. The second C is caution-to caution against the dismantling of civil rights fueled in part by the conservative New Federalism. The third C is challenge-to envision our role in justice struggles in the post-September 11th Bush-Ashcroft era and, specifically, to think hard about what "Civil Rights" now means and why "Reclaiming Civil Rights' …

Coyote-Activated Frightening Devices For Reducing Sheep Predation On Open Range, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Michael J. Lavelle, Steve Moyles Jan 2003

Coyote-Activated Frightening Devices For Reducing Sheep Predation On Open Range, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Michael J. Lavelle, Steve Moyles

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Domestic sheep ranching is an important agricultural industry in the United States and coyote (Canis latrans) depredation on lambs and ewes continues to challenge ranchers and agencies responsible for protecting sheep. Lethal methods used in controlling coyote depredation include aerial gunning, toxicants, trapping, and calling and shooting. Nonlethal methods include frightening devices, fences, livestock protection animals, and stringent husbandry practices. Ranchers and agencies responsible for controlling coyote depredation need frightening devices that are more effective than those currently available. We describe a field evaluation of 2 animal-activated frightening devices: an acoustic device and an acoustic device with a …

Service Learning Among University Students Through Working With South Asian Children, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, Meng Soi, Florence Fong, Wing No, Helen Lau Jan 2003

Service Learning Among University Students Through Working With South Asian Children, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, Meng Soi, Florence Fong, Wing No, Helen Lau

OSL Journal / Paper Series 論文

The benefits of service learning for the intellectual and personal development of students have been discussed in the past few decades. Jacoby (1996) defines service learning as, “a form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote student learning and development”. The idea of using a service-learning approach in teaching curricula is “far from new” (Gray et al, 2000) and the scope of it has been expanding substantially in tertiary education overseas, though it is still not pervasive in Hong Kong. The Lingnan Angels is …

“All Hayll, All Hayll, Both Blithe And Glad” : Direct Address In Early English Drama, 1400-1585, Michelle M. Butler '90 Jan 2003

“All Hayll, All Hayll, Both Blithe And Glad” : Direct Address In Early English Drama, 1400-1585, Michelle M. Butler '90

Doctoral Dissertations

"Now will I praise those godly men,

our ancestors, each in his own time...

All these were glorious in their time,

each illustrious in his day.

Some of them have left behind a name

and men recount their praiseworthy deeds " (Sirach 44: I. 7-8)

Direct address is widely acknowledged as a fundamental technique in early English, particularly medieval, drama. The observation that early English drama does not have the convention of the ‘fourth wall,’ and frequently speaks directly to and interacts with the audience would not be news to scholars o f this drama; many have mentioned it. Towards A Resolution Of The Dispute - Introduction, Robert Leeson Jan 2003

Towards A Resolution Of The Dispute - Introduction, Robert Leeson

Business Book Chapters

The chapters in Part Four fall into four sections. The first three chapters represent Patinkin’s ongoing scholarly interest in explaining the evolution of Keynes’ economics and his relationship to the Chicago economists. In his Sir Dennis Robertson lecture, Patinkin (chapter 44 [1974], 4, 27, 12) explained that he was using the term “Keynesian monetary theory” in contrast to “the quantity theory” to describe “the General Theory and the literature to which it gave rise – though I should note that the aspect of the theory that is my primary concern here (namely, the treatment of money from the viewpoint of …

Primary Boycotts And Medical Services, Philip J. Evans Jan 2003

Primary Boycotts And Medical Services, Philip J. Evans

Law Papers and Journal Articles

The Trade Practices Act 1974 (Cth) (the TPA), prohibits the making of, or the giving effect to, contracts, agreements or understandings between competitors which purport to prevent the supply of goods or services to persons. These arrangements are known as exclusionary provisions or primary boycotts.

This article discusses the role of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in enforcing the prohibition of the making of exclusionary provisions and the application of the relevant legal principles. An understanding of these principles is important to all those involved in allied health professions.

The article further discusses two recent examples where medical …

The Fordham Law Drug Policy Reform Project: America's Oldest War: The Efficacy Of United States Drug Policy, John Nicholas Iannuzzi, Graham Boyd, Asa Hutchinson

Fordham Urban Law Journal

The Fordham Law Drug Policy Reform Project planned and executed the debate, "America's Oldest War: The Efficacy of United States Drug Policy," on April 23, 2002 at the end of the organization's first year. The goal of the debate was to bring to one forum the leading voices at both ends of the drug policy spectrum. Professor John Nicholas Iannuzzi moderated, giving each speaker three minutes to answer each question from the floor. Over one hundred and twenty professionals, students, and community members attended the debate.
