Visual Marking: A Convergence Of Goal- And Stimulus-Driven Processes During Visual Search, Paul Atchley, Sybil E. Jones, Lesa Hoffman Jan 2003

Visual Marking: A Convergence Of Goal- And Stimulus-Driven Processes During Visual Search, Paul Atchley, Sybil E. Jones, Lesa Hoffman

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Watson and Humphreys (1997) proposed that visual marking is a goal-directed process that enhances visual search through the inhibition of old objects. In addition to the standard marking case with targets at new locations, included in Experiment 1 was a set of trials with targets always at old locations, as well as a set of trials with targets varying between new and old locations. The participants’ performance when detecting the target at old locations was equivalent to their performance in the full-baseline condition when they knew the target would be at old locations, and was worse when the target appeared …

Effects Of Maternal Depression On Youth Adjustment, Jennifer Alexander Jan 2003

Effects Of Maternal Depression On Youth Adjustment, Jennifer Alexander

Graduate Research Papers

Depressive disorders are chronic illnesses affecting women and their families for extended periods of time. This paper summarizes research related to the effects of maternal depression on children's short and long term adjustment. Children of depressed mothers are at risk for internalizing and externalizing disorders. Genetics account for a small portion of these problems. Since depressed mothers tend to withdraw or show intrusive, hostile behaviors with their children, parent-child interaction problems account for the majority of youth adjustment problems, particularly when mothers' depression is severe, occurs during infancy, is chronic, and is paired with high family conflict or separation. Individual …

Wto Compassion Or Superiority Complex?: What To Make Of The Wto Waiver For "Conflict Diamonds", Joost Pauwelyn Jan 2003

Wto Compassion Or Superiority Complex?: What To Make Of The Wto Waiver For "Conflict Diamonds", Joost Pauwelyn

Michigan Journal of International Law

In May 2003, the WTO granted a waiver for trade restrictions imposed on WTO members not participating in the Kimberley Certification Scheme combating so-called "conflict diamonds." This Article examines the implications of this waiver decision. It argues that GATT/TBT provisions may already excuse the trade restrictions at issue, especially now that the UN Security Council has explicitly supported them. The waiver, therefore, risks sending out the wrong signals, confirming a WTO "superiority complex." At the same time, by excluding restrictions between Kimberley participants from its scope, the waiver implies that WTO members considered the Kimberley scheme to be a non-WTO …

The Inherent Power Of The Federal Courts To Compel Participation In Nonbinding Forms Of Alternative Dispute Resolution, Amy M. Pugh, Richard A. Bales Jan 2003

The Inherent Power Of The Federal Courts To Compel Participation In Nonbinding Forms Of Alternative Dispute Resolution, Amy M. Pugh, Richard A. Bales

Duquesne Law Review

This article argues that the federal district courts have the inherent authority to compel litigants to participate in nonbinding Alternative Dispute Resolution processes, when local statutes or rules are not in place to authorize such compulsion. The authors assert five reasons why they believe the courts have this power: (1) the federal courts' inherent powers are necessary to manage the courts' affairs; (2) inherent powers are key to achieving the orderly and expeditious disposition of cases; (3) the courts' inherent powers are strong, giving courts the ability to control the conduct of those appearing before them; (4) the use of …

The Process And Perspective Of The Therapist In The Treatment Of Self-Mutilation, Megan M. Parketon Jan 2003

The Process And Perspective Of The Therapist In The Treatment Of Self-Mutilation, Megan M. Parketon

Graduate Research Papers

Research for the past 35 years has involved inpatient mentally ill persons who have been institutionalized. Treatment for self-mutilation has also focused primarily on mentally ill and mentally retarded patients. There has been little research done on the specific topic of adolescent female self-mutilation. Self-mutilation has become increasingly prevalent among female adolescents.

In this paper the therapist's perspective of treatment and the therapist's process of treatment were researched. Treatment should be tailored to the specific needs of the adolescent and often involved multiple treatments. Eleven styles of treatment were addressed and the qualities that a therapist needs to possess were …

Spatio-Temporal Patterns Of Campylobacter Contamination In Freshwaters: Results From The Taieri And Motueka Catchments, Rebekah Eyles, George L. Benwell, Dev Niyogi, Colin Townsend, Phil Weinstein

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

New Zealand has a history of rapid ecosystem change since the arrival of humans, resulting in a predominantly agricultural landscape. Non-point source pollution from pastoral land use causes microbial contamination of freshwaters and compromises their suitability for contact recreation. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of campylobacteriosis in the developed world (334 cases per 100, 000 people), yet only a few surveys for Campylobacter in freshwaters have been carried out. This study investigates the influence of land use and other environmental variables on spatio-temporal variation in Campylobacter concentrations in two distinct river catchments (the Taieri and Motueka) of …

The Utility Of Dibels As A Curriculum Based Measurement In Relation To Reading Proficiency On High Stakes Tests, Rebecca Gayle Cook

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills or DIBELS reading measures and the Stanford Achievement Test, Ninth Edition or SAT9 reading scores. The following research question was examined: What is the concurrent validity of the DIBELS reading measures in relation to students’ SAT9 reading scores? In this study, archival data from five firstgrade classrooms at a rural southeastern Ohio elementary school were collected. The results of the study indicated that there was a positive and significant correlation between DIBELS measures and SAT9 scores with the exception of …

Development Of A Gis Geodatabase As A Tool For Analyzing Spatial Relationships In The Species Distributions Of West Virginia Fishes, Nathan D. Bowe Jan 2003

Development Of A Gis Geodatabase As A Tool For Analyzing Spatial Relationships In The Species Distributions Of West Virginia Fishes, Nathan D. Bowe

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

One of the most complete references to date of fish species distribution in West Virginia is a 1995 book entitled “The Fishes of West Virginia” (Stauffer, et al.). In this project, geographic information systems (GIS) and relational database technology have been utilized to adapt that reference into a system where spatially arranged collection site features are related to distribution data through a series of common fields among tables in a geodatabase. The geodatabase is stored in an MDB-formatted database management system (DBMS) which is readable by Microsoft Access and useful in its own right as a means to query distribution …

Enough Is Enough: 24 Hours/Day Is Enough, James Y.S. Wong Jan 2003

Enough Is Enough: 24 Hours/Day Is Enough, James Y.S. Wong

Doctor of Ministry

Today many people are crying for more time. Many pastors are also. The contents of this writing endeavor to address the issue of time starvation among overworked pastors. My conviction is that the God-given 24 hours a day is enough. God will never ask from us what we cannot give. Often we are victims of our own aspirations. The discussions and solutions provided in this writing fit into the shared values of pastoral ministry: a) our faithfulness to our ministerial call; b) our dedication to the Lord; and c) our love for His church and His people. Based upon these …

Unbundling Marriage, James Herbie Difonzo Jan 2003

Unbundling Marriage, James Herbie Difonzo

Hofstra Law Review

Marriage is emerging as a “bundle” of legal benefits and burdens. The history of domestic relations has produced a cornucopia of family arrangements, and the yield shows no signs of diminishing. At the same time, our yearning for a halcyon past has led many to the erroneous belief that the family formation consisting of two parents and the children of their ‘til-death-do-they-part union is the only culturally authentic and “traditional” one. In fact, as Michael Grossberg has observed, our domestic past has been characterized by “the constant reality of American family diversity.” As twenty-first century families are exploring new contours, …
